How to install GTA 5 mods safely on PC
Safe GTA 5 modding on PC comes down to three habits: install Script Hook V, ScriptHookVDotNet and OpenIV in the right order, keep every file change inside OpenIV’s “mods” folder, and never carry any of it into GTA Online. Do that and a crash is a thirty-second fix instead of a 100 GB reinstall. This guide covers Legacy and Enhanced on Steam, Epic and the Rockstar Launcher, with exact file paths for each mod type.
The short answer
Create a copy of your game folder, install the three core tools, then route every mod through OpenIV’s mods folder or the scripts folder. You never overwrite an original game file, so Rockstar’s launcher can still verify the install, and you can pull one bad mod without touching the rest.
Quick steps: a clean modded GTA 5 install
- Copy the whole Grand Theft Auto V folder somewhere safe, or at least back up GTA5.exe, PlayGTAV.exe and the update folder.
- Download Script Hook V from dev-c.com and drop ScriptHookV.dll and dinput8.dll into the game root.
- Install ScriptHookVDotNet from its GitHub releases page and create a “scripts” folder in the game root.
- Install OpenIV, open your game in it, go to Tools, ASI Manager, and install both the ASI Loader and OpenIV.asi.
- Use OpenIV to create the “mods” folder. Edit only files inside it, never the originals.
- Add one mod, launch Story Mode, confirm it works, then add the next.
- Before playing GTA Online, launch without mods or keep a separate vanilla install.
Pick your version before you download anything
Rockstar shipped GTA V Enhanced on PC on 4 March 2025 as a free upgrade for existing owners, and renamed the original build GTA V Legacy. They install as separate games in separate folders. A mod built for one will not work in the other, and most of the back catalogue on GTA5-Mods.com and Nexus Mods targets Legacy.
Enhanced uses a newer build of the RAGE engine with different archive layouts and a different executable. Script Hook V has an Enhanced build, but OpenIV does not support Enhanced, and every mod page still needs checking for which version it supports. If a page says nothing, assume Legacy.
| Version | Install folder (Steam default) | Script Hook V | OpenIV mods folder | Mod library size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GTA V Legacy | steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V | Yes | Yes | Largest, ten years deep |
| GTA V Enhanced | steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced | Yes, Enhanced build only | Yes, Enhanced build only | Growing, many ports still pending |
| FiveM (Cfx.re) | Separate FiveM install, reads your Legacy files | Not used, servers run their own resources | Not used | Server-side, per server |
FiveM is the exception to the “no multiplayer mods” rule. Rockstar acquired Cfx.re in August 2023, and FiveM servers run their own scripts, vehicles and maps on a separate client that never touches GTA Online. If your goal is custom cars in multiplayer, that is the only sanctioned route.
Epic users will find the game under C:\Program Files\Epic Games\GTAV by default. The Rockstar Launcher installs to C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V. Everything below applies to all three storefronts once you are inside the game folder.
Back up first, because updates and bad installs will happen
A full copy of the Legacy folder is around 114 to 125 GB depending on how many updates are installed. If you have the disk space, copy the whole thing before you touch it. That copy becomes your vanilla build for GTA Online and your insurance against a broken modded GTA 5 install.
If space is tight, back up these at minimum:
- GTA5.exe and PlayGTAV.exe (Legacy) or GTA5_Enhanced.exe (Enhanced)
- The entire update folder, especially update\update.rpf
- x64e.rpf through x64w.rpf if you plan on replacement vehicles or peds
Keep your downgrader files too. Each Rockstar title update changes GTA5.exe, and mods built against the old executable stop working until their authors catch up. Having last patch’s executable on hand lets you roll back and keep playing while you wait.
The three core tools
Everything else in GTA 5 modding sits on top of these. Install them before any actual mod.
| Tool | Author | What it does | Files you place | Where they go |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Script Hook V | Alexander Blade | Lets .asi scripts call the game’s native functions | ScriptHookV.dll, dinput8.dll, NativeTrainer.asi (optional) | Game root folder |
| ScriptHookVDotNet | crosire and contributors | Runs C# and VB .dll scripts | ScriptHookVDotNet.asi, ScriptHookVDotNet2.dll, ScriptHookVDotNet3.dll | Game root, scripts into a “scripts” subfolder |
| OpenIV | OpenIV team | Opens and edits the game’s .rpf archives, installs .oiv packages, manages the mods folder | OpenIV.asi via ASI Manager | OpenIV installs separately, the .asi lives in the game root |
Script Hook V
Download it only from dev-c.com. The zip contains a bin folder with ScriptHookV.dll, dinput8.dll and NativeTrainer.asi. The .dll pair goes next to GTA5.exe. The dinput8.dll is the ASI loader; without it, nothing with an .asi extension runs.
NativeTrainer.asi is a basic trainer bundled with the hook. It opens with F4 by default. Most players replace it with Menyoo PC or Simple Trainer for GTA V, both of which are richer and still free. Drop the one you prefer in the game root as well.
Script Hook V checks the game version at launch. After a Rockstar patch it will refuse to load and show an error until Blade updates it, which usually takes days to a couple of weeks. That is expected behaviour, not a broken install.
ScriptHookVDotNet
A large share of script mods are written in C# and need ScriptHookVDotNet. Grab the latest release from the GitHub page, extract ScriptHookVDotNet.asi and the numbered .dll files into the game root, then create a folder called “scripts” alongside them. Any .dll script you download goes in that scripts folder, along with its .ini config file if it ships one.
It needs a current .NET Framework and the Visual C++ redistributable installed in Windows. If a script loads nothing and ScriptHookVDotNet.log in the game folder shows a dependency error, those two installs are the fix.
OpenIV and the mods folder
OpenIV is the archive editor the whole scene runs on. Install it, pick your game and folder on first launch, then go to Tools, ASI Manager, and install both the ASI Loader and OpenIV.asi. Then enable the mods folder when prompted.
With OpenIV.asi active, the game checks the mods folder first for any archive and falls back to the original if nothing is there. You copy an archive into mods, edit the copy, and the vanilla file stays untouched. Any mod page that tells you to edit x64e.rpf directly is giving you 2015 advice. Edit mods\x64e.rpf instead.
Take-Two sent OpenIV a cease-and-desist in June 2017 and reversed course within weeks after player backlash. Rockstar’s public position since then is that single-player modding on PC is fine as long as it stays out of GTA Online and does not use the game’s files to build commercial products. That is the line you are working within.
Installing each type of mod
| Mod type | Typical files | Destination | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Script mod (.asi) | *.asi, sometimes an .ini | Game root | Script Hook V |
| Script mod (.dll) | .dll, .ini | scripts folder | ScriptHookVDotNet |
| Replacement vehicle | name.yft, name_hi.yft, name.ytd | mods\x64e.rpf\levels\gta5\vehicles.rpf or the DLC pack the page names | OpenIV |
| Replacement ped or weapon | .ydd, .ytd, .yft, .ymt | Path listed on the mod page, inside mods | OpenIV |
| Add-on vehicle | dlc.rpf in a named folder | mods\update\x64\dlcpacks\foldername\dlc.rpf plus a dlclist.xml line | OpenIV, gameconfig edit |
| Map add-on | dlc.rpf, sometimes .ymap files | dlcpacks as above, or a map loader’s folder | OpenIV, often a map loader script |
| .oiv package | one .oiv file | Double-click, OpenIV Package Installer, choose mods folder | OpenIV |
Script mods
These are the easiest. An .asi file goes in the game root next to GTA5.exe. A .dll goes in the scripts folder. Read the .ini that comes with it, because that is where key bindings and options live. Two scripts fighting over the same key is the most common reason a mod “does nothing”.
Script mods also cover the quality-of-life layer most players want: better handling, realistic traffic, improved police, a working trainer. For a curated list of the ones worth your time, the site’s roundup of “gta 5 mods” for story mode is the place to start.
Replacement mods (vehicles, peds, maps)
A replacement mod swaps the model files of an existing vehicle or character. The mod page will name a vehicle to replace and give an archive path. Open OpenIV, enable Edit Mode (the button top right), navigate to that path inside the mods folder, and drag the new files in over the old ones.
The catch is that the replaced vanilla vehicle vanishes from the game. Replace the Adder and every Adder in traffic and in Legendary Motorsport’s $1,000,000 listing becomes the new car. Handling data stays with the vanilla entry unless the mod also ships a handling.meta line, which you paste into mods\update\update.rpf\common\data\handling.meta or the DLC’s own handling file.
Keep a text file logging which vanilla vehicle you replaced with what. Six months later you will not remember.
Add-on mods and dlclist.xml
Add-ons are the better option for vehicles because nothing vanilla gets lost. The mod ships a folder containing a dlc.rpf. You copy that folder into mods\update\x64\dlcpacks. Then you open mods\update\update.rpf\common\data\dlclist.xml in OpenIV’s editor and add one line near the bottom, in the form <Item>dlcpacks:/foldername/</Item>, using the exact folder name from the mod.
The game loads it on next start. You spawn the car by its model name through Menyoo or Simple Trainer, since it has no dealership entry. Add-on peds work the same way with a different xml, usually peds.meta or a dedicated add-on peds script.
.oiv packages
A .oiv is a one-click installer built for OpenIV. Double-click it, OpenIV’s Package Installer opens, and you choose to install to the mods folder or the game folder. Always pick mods. The installer lists every file it will touch before it runs, so read that list. A .oiv that wants to write to the game root or replace GTA5.exe deserves suspicion.
Large graphics overhauls and total conversions often ship as .oiv because they touch hundreds of files. They install cleanly, but uninstalling means reverting those files by hand or wiping the mods folder, which is one more reason to keep it isolated.
Gameconfig and limit adjusters
Vanilla gameconfig.xml, at update\update.rpf\common\data\gameconfig.xml, caps how many vehicles and peds the game can hold in memory. Add more than a handful of add-on cars and the game crashes on load or during the first drive. The fix is a modified gameconfig matching your exact game patch, paired with the Heap Limit Adjuster and Packfile Limit Adjuster .asi files. All three are free on GTA5-Mods.com and must be updated after each Rockstar patch.
Agent's note
Install add-on vehicles in batches of five, launching between batches. If a crash appears, the last batch contains the culprit, and you only have five dlclist.xml lines to check instead of fifty.
Keep GTA Online clean
This is the part that costs people their accounts. Rockstar added BattlEye anti-cheat to GTA Online on PC in September 2024, and it ships with Enhanced as well. BattlEye flags ScriptHookV.dll, trainers and modified archives, and Rockstar’s own terms state that modded files in Online can result in suspension or a permanent ban with no appeal.
Rockstar provides a launch argument, -nobattleye, which starts the game with anti-cheat disabled and locks you to Story Mode. Add it in Steam under Properties, Launch Options, in the Rockstar Launcher under Settings, My Installed Games, Grand Theft Auto V, or in Epic under Settings, Manage Games, Additional Command Line Arguments. With that flag set, your modded install cannot even connect to Online, which removes the temptation.
Heads up
Any mod menu, money script or vehicle mod in GTA Online can get your Social Club account banned and your characters wiped. Script Hook V refuses to load in Online, but modified .rpf archives do not get that safety net. Keep a vanilla copy for Online, or run Story Mode with -nobattleye and never mix the two.
No “gta online money cheats” exist that survive Rockstar’s server-side checks, and the modders who sell them are the same ones Take-Two has sued repeatedly. Treat anyone offering Online mods as a threat to your account, not a service.
Story Mode is different. Mods in single player are tolerated and, unlike the built-in “gta 5 cheat codes“, they do not disable Steam achievements. You can run a modded save all the way through and still unlock Solid Gold, Baby.
When a Rockstar update breaks everything
Updates arrive with GTA Online content drops, usually twice a year around June and December, with smaller patches between. Each one replaces GTA5.exe. Script Hook V stops loading, gameconfig becomes mismatched, and some scripts crash.
You have two options. Wait for the tool authors, which for Script Hook V means watching dev-c.com and for gameconfig means the mod’s page. Or downgrade: restore your backed-up GTA5.exe and PlayGTAV.exe, set Steam to “only update this game when I launch it” and launch through a desktop shortcut or in offline mode so it does not re-patch. GTA5-Mods hosts downgrader packages for each version if you forgot to back up.
Updating your mods after a patch, in order:
- Update Script Hook V first. Nothing else runs without it.
- Update ScriptHookVDotNet if the hook changed its interface.
- Update gameconfig.xml and both limit adjusters to the new patch number.
- Re-copy the new update.rpf into mods, then reapply your dlclist.xml and handling.meta edits. The patched original overwrites nothing in mods, but your old copy now references missing DLC.
- Test with no scripts in the scripts folder, then add them back in groups.
That fourth step trips people most. After a patch, mods\update\update.rpf is a stale copy of the old game data. The game will load it, see DLC entries that do not match the new executable, and crash. Fresh copy, re-edit, done.
Fixing the common crashes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Crash on launch, no error | Mismatched Script Hook V after a patch | Update the hook or downgrade GTA5.exe |
| Error “Script Hook V critical error: unknown game version” | Same as above | Same as above |
| Loads, then crashes at the story mode loading screen | Add-on vehicle count exceeds gameconfig limits, or a typo in dlclist.xml | Install a modified gameconfig, check every dlclist line for the exact folder name and trailing slash |
| Game runs but scripts do nothing | ScriptHookVDotNet missing dependencies, or script in wrong folder | Check ScriptHookVDotNet.log, confirm .dll files sit in scripts, install .NET Framework and VC++ |
| Textures flicker or vanish in traffic | Replacement vehicle textures over budget, or too many high-poly add-ons | Lower the texture pack, remove the heaviest add-ons, confirm Heap Limit Adjuster is installed |
| Stuttering every few seconds | A script polling the game on every tick, often an old traffic or police mod | Remove scripts one at a time, check for a newer release |
| Antivirus deleted dinput8.dll | False positive, extremely common with ASI loaders | Restore from quarantine, add the game folder to exclusions |
For every crash, the Rockstar Launcher’s “verify game files” button is the nuclear option. It restores every original archive but leaves the mods folder and scripts folder alone, so a verify plus a mods folder review puts you back on a known state without losing your work.
Avoiding malware and bad actors
GTA 5 modders are a mixed crowd. The scene has ten years of trusted names, and it also has people repackaging popular mods with a payload. A few rules keep you clear.
Download from GTA5-Mods.com, Nexus Mods, the official dev-c.com page and crosire’s GitHub, and nowhere else unless a trusted modder links you there directly. GTA5-Mods moderates uploads and scans executables, which is why it is the default library for the scene.
Be suspicious of any mod that ships its own .exe installer. Legitimate mods are archives, .asi files, .dll files or .oiv packages. A script mod has no reason to be an executable.
Check the comments and the upload date. A GTA 5 modder with a two-year comment history of players confirming it works is a different proposition from a day-old account with one upload. Read the last ten comments for crash reports on the current patch.
Scan anything that is not from the four sources above with Windows Defender and VirusTotal. Expect false positives on dinput8.dll and ScriptHookV.dll from some vendors; those two are safe when downloaded from dev-c.com and nowhere else.
Finally, never pay for a mod menu. Free trainers like Menyoo and Simple Trainer do everything a single-player menu needs. Paid menus are built for Online cheating, they are the ones Take-Two targets in court, and buying one puts your payment details with people whose business is breaking the rules.
Agent's note
Make a text file in the game root called modlist.txt and add a line every time you install something: mod name, version, date, files touched. When something breaks in six months, that file is worth more than any forum thread.
FAQ
Is GTA 5 modding legal?
Yes, for Story Mode on PC. Rockstar’s stated policy since 2017 is that Take-Two will generally not act against mods that are single-player, non-commercial and respect third-party IP rights. Mods in Online break the terms of service and can get your account banned.
Can I get banned for mods in Story Mode?
No. BattlEye and Rockstar’s ban system target GTA Online. Story Mode mods are tolerated, and the -nobattleye launch argument exists precisely so modded installs can run single player without triggering anti-cheat.
Do mods disable achievements?
Mods do not. The built-in cheat codes do, for the session in which you use them. A modded Story Mode playthrough can still unlock every Steam achievement.
Do Legacy mods work on GTA V Enhanced?
Mostly no. Enhanced uses different archives and a different executable. Script Hook V and OpenIV have Enhanced builds, but each individual mod needs to be ported. Check the mod page for an Enhanced version before installing.
Can I use mods in FiveM?
Server owners install mods on their servers, and your FiveM client downloads them when you join. You do not install client-side vehicle or script mods into FiveM the way you do in Story Mode. FiveM reads your Legacy game files but keeps its own cache, so a vanilla Legacy install is what it expects.
How much disk space does a modded GTA 5 install take?
A duplicated mods folder with update.rpf and a couple of x64 archives adds 5 to 15 GB on top of the game. A full second copy of the game for GTA Online adds the full install size again, roughly 114 to 125 GB for Legacy.
What should I install first?
Script Hook V, then ScriptHookVDotNet, then OpenIV with its ASI Manager and mods folder. Launch the game once after each to confirm it still starts. Only then add your first mod.
