Every working GTA 5 cheat code for story mode, laid out by platform: PlayStation button combos, Xbox button combos, PC console commands and the in-game phone numbers that work everywhere. All 35 cheats below apply to the original 2013 release, the PS4 and Xbox One versions, and the current Enhanced builds on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The short answer

GTA 5 cheats are entered one of three ways. On console you tap a button sequence during gameplay with no menu open. On PC you press the tilde key to open a text console and type a word. On any platform, including PC, you can pull out the character’s phone and dial a 1-999 number.

There is no money cheat, no cheat that works in GTA Online, and no cheat you can save into your game permanently. Each one lasts until you load a save, die in a few cases, or dial it again to switch it off.

The phone numbers spell words on a keypad. 1-999-7246-545-537 is PAINKILLER, 1-999-5299-3787 is LAWYERUP, 1-999-887-853 is TURTLE. Once you notice that, the whole list becomes much easier to remember because the PC word and the phone number are the same thing.

GTA 5 PlayStation cheat codes (PS3, PS4, PS5)

Button codes are identical across every PlayStation generation, including the PS5 Enhanced version released in March 2022. L1, L2, R1 and R2 refer to the shoulder and trigger buttons. Directions are the d-pad, not the analogue stick.

Notice that the raise and lower wanted level codes are mirror images of each other. Both open with R1, R1, Circle, R2, then the d-pad direction flips. Enter the wrong one mid-chase and you have just added a star, so slow down on that last stretch.

GTA 5 Xbox cheat codes (Xbox 360, Xbox One, Series X|S)

The Xbox codes map directly from the PlayStation ones. X becomes A, Square becomes X, Circle becomes B, Triangle becomes Y, and the shoulder buttons translate as LB, LT, RB, RT. If you ever forget a code on one platform, you can convert it from the other.

Timing is the thing that trips people up. The game gives you a generous window between presses but it is not infinite, and holding a direction counts as one press. Tap, don’t hold.

GTA 5 PC cheat codes

PC players have two options and the console is the faster one. Press the tilde key (~), which sits under Escape on most keyboards, type the word, hit Enter. The console closes itself and the “Cheat activated” banner appears on the left of the screen.

The PC Enhanced version, which arrived in March 2025 as a free upgrade for existing owners, uses the same words as the Legacy build. Nothing changed. If the tilde key does nothing, check your keyboard layout; on some non-US layouts the console key is the one directly below Escape regardless of what it prints.

The same console also accepts the phone numbers, so you can type 1-999-7246-545-537 if you really want to, but PAINKILLER is shorter.

Vehicle cheats and what they cost to buy instead

Vehicle cheats spawn the vehicle directly in front of you. If you are standing in a tight alley it will clip into a wall, so step into the open first. Everything spawns stock, no upgrades, and it despawns like any other street car once you walk far enough away. The prices below are what the same vehicle costs from the in-game websites in story mode, which tells you how much value each cheat is actually handing you.

Those prices matter because they are the reason the Buzzard cheat is the single most valuable code in the game. A million and three quarters of story mode money buys a lot of stock market shares, and the cheat hands you the same helicopter for free, fully armed with miniguns and homing missiles.

Phone-only cheats: the ones with unlock conditions

Three vehicle cheats and Director Mode have no button code on any platform. They were added with the PS4, Xbox One and PC re-release in 2014 and 2015, so PS3 and Xbox 360 players never had them. You dial them from the phone, and three of them only work after you have done something specific in the story.

The Kraken number spells KRAKEN on a keypad and the Duke O’Death number spells DEATHCAR, which helps. The Kraken costs $1,325,000 from DockTease once unlocked and the Dodo is $500,000 from Elitas Travel, so these cheats skip some heavy spending too. The Duke O’Death is free either way; after the Duel event it appears at your character’s garage, and the cheat just saves you the drive.

Director Mode deserves its own mention because it is where you get things that are not available through any normal cheat. Pick any character model from the story, set the time of day, pick weather, toggle invincibility and explosive ammo from a menu, and even ride animals. It is the closest thing GTA 5 has to a sandbox menu, and it has been free on every current platform since the PC launch in April 2015.

The 10 best GTA 5 cheats, ranked

Thirty-five codes is a lot. Here is which ones you will actually use, ranked by how much they change the way you play.

1. Buzzard (BUZZOFF). A $1.75 million armed helicopter on demand. Fast transport across the whole map, a weapon platform for clearing five-star chases, and the quickest way to reach the top of Mount Chiliad or the Maze Bank tower. Nothing else on the list gives you this much.

2. Invincibility (PAINKILLER). Five minutes of total immunity to bullets, explosions, falls, fire and drowning. Re-enter it before the timer runs out and you can chain it indefinitely. The reason it sits at number two and not number one is that it does nothing for your vehicle, which can still blow up with you in it.

3. Lower wanted level (LAWYERUP). One star gone per entry, usable mid-chase, works even when the helicopters are already overhead. This is the cheat that quietly saves the most save-reloads.

4. Give weapons (TOOLUP). A knife, a sidearm, an SMG, a rifle, a shotgun, a sniper rifle and explosives with ammo for all of them. Enter it a second time to top the ammo back up. Useful in the first hour when Franklin has nothing but a pistol.

5. Skyfall (SKYFALL). Teleports you to the sky above your current position and drops you. Pair it with the parachute cheat for a free aerial tour, or dive head-first into the ground and walk away. It is the only cheat in the game that makes a reasonable screenshot every time.

6. Explosive ammo (HIGHEX). Every round from every gun becomes a small grenade. A pistol turns into a rocket launcher with a magazine. Police vehicles pop with one shot. Just stay well back from your own targets.

7. Super jump (HOPTOIT). Clears buildings in a single leap, and the landing damage is low enough that you can chain jumps across downtown rooftops without health cheats. Combine with moon gravity for jumps that feel like a different game.

8. Max health and armor (TURTLE). Instant refill on both bars. Less exciting than invincibility but no timer and no re-entering, which makes it the better pick during long gunfights where you are already managing cover.

9. Slow motion aim (DEADEYE). The aim equivalent of Michael’s special ability, available to any character, with three strengths. Enter it up to three times for progressively slower time while aiming, and a fourth entry switches it off. Fantastic for the sniper challenges and the Trevor rampages.

10. Slippery cars (SNOWDAY). Turns every car in Los Santos into a drift machine. It is pure fun with no practical purpose, which is why it ranks last among the ten, but it is the cheat people come back to years later.

How these were ranked

Three criteria, applied to every code on the list.

• Replacement value. How much GTA$ or how many hours of story progress the cheat substitutes for. The Buzzard and Kraken score highest here because their shop prices are huge; the BMX scores lowest.
• Session utility. How often a typical story playthrough would benefit from it. Wanted-level and health cheats get used constantly; the Trashmaster gets used once for curiosity.
• Side effects. Anything the cheat does that you did not ask for. Drunk mode wrecks your driving, Skyfall kills you if you forget the parachute, explosive ammo tends to kill you from your own splash damage. Those penalties push a cheat down the list.

Vehicle spawns were only considered on the replacement value and side-effects criteria, since any of them scores the same on session utility once you have a Buzzard.

Top pick: the Buzzard

If you take one GTA 5 cheat code into every session, make it BUZZOFF, 1-999-289-9633, or the Circle/B-heavy button code above. It covers transport, combat and sightseeing at once, it has no timer, and it replaces the single most expensive purchase most players never make in story mode. The invincibility cheat is close behind, but a helicopter you can land on top of the Vinewood sign is the better opening move.

Combos worth trying

Individual cheats are fine. Stacking them is where GTA 5 gets properly strange. All of these have been run on the Enhanced PS5 build and work the same on Legacy versions.

Moon gravity plus super jump. FLOATER then HOPTOIT. Each jump carries you the length of a city block and the fall never hurts. Spawn a Sanchez while both are active and small ramps send the bike into orbit.

Skyfall plus parachute plus Buzzard. SKYDIVE first, then SKYFALL. You get a full-altitude parachute descent over whatever part of the map you were standing on. Land, dial BUZZOFF, fly back up, repeat. It is a faster map tour than anything the game offers normally.

Slippery cars plus Rapid GT plus slow motion. SNOWDAY, then RAPIDGT, then SLOWMO once. The Rapid GT is one of the most balanced sports cars in the story, and in drift physics with a mild slow-mo it becomes the best drifting setup in the game without touching Los Santos Customs.

Explosive melee plus invincibility. HOTHANDS then PAINKILLER. Without the second cheat, explosive punches hurt you more than your target. With it, a wander through the Vespucci boardwalk crowd becomes a demolition derby.

Drunk mode plus moon gravity. LIQUOR then FLOATER, then get in any car. There is no practical use. It is the funniest thing on this page.

A good spot to test combinations is the big empty intersection at the bottom of Forum Drive in Davis, the stretch that runs toward grove street. Flat ground, wide lanes, few pedestrians, and a quick drive to the freeway if you want speed.

Which version you are playing, and why it matters

GTA 5 has shipped in three distinct builds since 2013, and a few cheat details differ between them.

Original (PS3 and Xbox 360, 2013). All 31 button and phone cheats in the player and vehicle tables work. The Kraken, Dodo, Duke O’Death and Director Mode do not exist on these platforms. The original release did not ship on PC, so the tilde console only arrived with the later builds.

Legacy (PS4, Xbox One, PC, 2014 and 2015). Everything on this page works. This is also the build that added the first-person view, which makes Skyfall and super jump considerably more disorienting.

Enhanced (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S from March 2022, PC from March 2025). Same codes, same phone numbers, same unlock conditions. The PS5 version adds the DualSense haptics and the PC version adds ray tracing, and neither touches the cheat system. Rockstar’s support documentation for the Enhanced versions lists the identical codes, so there is nothing new to learn if you upgraded.

Trophy and achievement behaviour is the same across all three: entering any cheat locks them for the session, reloading a save unlocks them again. Rockstar has never changed this in any patch.

Cheats that do not exist in GTA 5

Half the “gta 5 cheat codes” searches each month are for things the game does not have. Save yourself the time.

• Money cheat. None. There has never been one in GTA 5 on any platform. Every video or site claiming otherwise is showing a mod, a glitch that has since been patched, or an outright fake. The legitimate ways to get rich in story mode are the Lester assassination missions combined with the stock market, and the hidden packages under the sea.
• Tank cheat. None. The Rhino is a $1.5 million Warstock purchase or a Fort Zancudo heist.
• Jetpack cheat. None. The Mount Chiliad mural started that rumour in 2013 and the jetpack eventually appeared in GTA Online as the Thruster in 2017, never in story mode.
• GTA Online cheats. None, and never will be. Rockstar’s terms of service treat any modification of the online environment as a bannable offence, and the anti-cheat on the PC Enhanced version is more aggressive than it used to be.
• Spawn any car. The vehicle cheats cover 14 vehicles, full stop. No Adder, no Zentorno, no Insurgent.
• Unlimited ammo. TOOLUP refills what it gave you, but there is no infinite ammo toggle outside of Director Mode’s settings.

How this compares to San Andreas

Veterans always ask why GTA 5 has fewer cheats than its 2004 predecessor. San Andreas shipped with more than 80 button codes, including infinite ammo, spawn-a-tank, riot mode, pedestrians with weapons and the famous HESOYAM for health, armor and $250,000. GTA 5 trimmed that list to 35 and removed money entirely.

The reason is GTA Online. Rockstar built story mode and Online on the same engine, and keeping a money cheat out of the single-player half removed one more thing to protect in the multiplayer half. The upside is that the GTA 5 cheat list is cleaner: no duplicate codes, no region-specific inputs, and the phone method means every code is identical on every platform.

Nothing has been confirmed about cheats in the next game. Rockstar’s trailers have shown no menus, no phone keypad and no console, so until the release date for gta 6 arrives and the game is in people’s hands, every claim about GTA 6 cheat codes is RUMOR at best and should be read as such.

FAQ

Do GTA 5 cheats disable trophies and achievements?

Yes, for the current session only. Enter any cheat and trophies and achievements stay locked until you load a save. The save itself is not marked, so you can cheat freely, reload, and go back to earning them.

Can I save my game with cheats on?

You can save, but cheats do not carry into the save. Load that file later and every cheat is off. Vehicles you spawned with a cheat are gone too, unless you parked them in a character’s garage before saving.

Is there a GTA 5 money cheat?

No. There is no money cheat on PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Series X|S or PC, in the Legacy or Enhanced versions. Use the Lester assassination missions with the stock market if you want millions in story mode.

Do the cheats work in GTA Online?

No. The cheat system is disabled in Online and using mods to replicate it violates Rockstar’s terms, which has led to permanent bans. Everything on this page is story mode only.

How long does the invincibility cheat last?

Five minutes. The “Cheat activated” message does not warn you when it expires, so set a mental timer or just re-enter PAINKILLER every few minutes during a long fight.

Why isn’t my cheat working?

The usual causes: a menu or the phone was open, you held a direction instead of tapping it, you pressed too slowly, or you are inside a mission that blocks the cheat. Director Mode cannot be opened during any mission, and vehicle spawns fail if there is no room in front of you.

How do I open the keypad on the phone?

Press Up on the d-pad to bring up the phone, then open the contacts list and select the keypad icon. On PC, Up arrow brings up the phone, or skip it entirely and type the number into the tilde console, which accepts both the phone numbers and the cheat words.

Do PS4 button codes work on PS5?

Yes. Every button code is identical across PS3, PS4 and PS5, and across Xbox 360, Xbox One and Series X|S. The Enhanced versions did not change a single cheat.
