Bloomberg’s Schreier says GTA 6 story feels closer to RDR2 than GTA 5

RUMOR

Bloomberg published Jason Schreier’s feature ‘The Making of Grand Theft Auto VI’ on October 14, 2026, after a visit to Rockstar North in Edinburgh and a daylong interview with senior staff. Coming out of a hands-off demo, Schreier wrote that the Jason and Lucia story seems more inspired by Red Dead Redemption II than Grand Theft Auto V. That comparison is his own impression, not a Rockstar statement, and the paywalled text reached us through the MP1st write-up of the feature.

What we know

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier spent a day at Rockstar North, speaking with publishing head Jennifer Kolbe and development leads Aaron Garbut, Phil Hooker and Rob Nelson. The feature ran on October 14, 2026 and also covered Rockstar’s nearly doubled workforce, changes to its crunch practices, and Kolbe’s denial of the $1.5B+ budget rumor.

During the hands-off demo, Rockstar staff told Bloomberg there are ‘hundreds’ of small explorable interiors in GTA VI, naming offices and gas station back rooms as examples. In the sequence shown, Jason skipped a bank because of its guards and instead robbed a gas station back office. Rockstar did not give a number beyond ‘hundreds’. We could not read the Bloomberg text directly, so this detail comes via MP1st’s write-up, which is not on our approved-source list; we treat it as a faithful relay but flag the hop.

The RDR2 line is where attribution matters. As relayed, Schreier wrote that the Jason and Lucia story seems more inspired by Red Dead Redemption II than Grand Theft Auto V. He called this ‘welcome’ and said the nihilism of the last GTA ‘got tiring fast’. Read that carefully: it is a reporter’s read after a limited demo, not a developer quote and not Rockstar marketing.

Separately, Rob Nelson told IGN that Rockstar is applying lessons from RDR2’s world-building to GTA VI, and a Yahoo Tech report from late August 2026, citing TGG, also mentioned ‘hundreds’ of accessible interiors. Those are consistent with the Bloomberg account but do not confirm a tonal shift.

On the schedule, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reaffirmed the November 19, 2026 launch in the Q4 FY26 earnings report on May 21, 2026, and Take-Two repeated it in its August 2026 report. The platforms named are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. No PC date has been given.

Leak claims of 700+ enterable buildings, many of them shops designed to be robbed, came from GameRoll in June 2025, as reported by The Game Post and GamingBible that month; an earlier January 2025 leak covered by TweakTown and GamingBible concerned a separate claim that 40% of large buildings would be enterable. SixHype, which summarised the claims, notes this type of number has been wrong before. We grade it D. A separate 40% versus 70% split of enterable buildings has been claimed with no sourcing worth grading.

Dataminers found a figure of 157 interiors, including supermarkets, bars and restaurants, in debug code from the September 2022 leak. That comes from GTAForums user Garza’s 60-page document on the leak, reported by Sportskeeda. We grade it C: the number is checkable against the 2022 material, but it describes an early build and the count can change before release.

Unnamed insiders, summarised by Vice, claim GTA VI borrows RDR2-style systems such as storing weapons in a car trunk rather than on a horse. Vice itself says these are not backed by Rockstar marketing. Grade D, could go either way.

What we don’t know yet

We do not know how serious or character-driven the finished story actually is. Schreier’s comparison is based on one hands-off demo of unknown length. We do not know the real number of interiors, whether the shop-robbery loop is systemic or scripted, or whether any RDR2-style inventory systems exist. We also do not have the full Bloomberg text in hand, so quote framing is second-hand.

What it means

The signal here is mild but consistent. A Rockstar studio head told IGN it is applying RDR2 world-building lessons, Rockstar staff told Bloomberg there are ‘hundreds’ of interiors, and a reporter with direct access came away thinking the writing leans RDR2. None of that is a confirmed pivot in tone. Treat the headline as an informed impression and the interior counts as ‘hundreds’ until Rockstar says otherwise.

His beat is everything attached to the next game: release windows, launch details, official trailers, platform plans and the steady drip of leaks that fills the gap between Rockstar announcements. He treats every claim as a question of sourcing first. A Take-Two earnings call or a Rockstar Newswire post gets reported as fact. A datamine or a tipster with a mixed record gets labeled as such. When a story shifts, he updates the piece and says what changed rather than quietly rewriting it. Readers should always be able to tell what is confirmed and what is still talk.
