GTA 5 release dates for every platform
GTA 5 first came out on September 17, 2013, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It then launched on PS4 and Xbox One on November 18, 2014, on PC on April 14, 2015, and on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on March 15, 2022. The newest version, GTA V Enhanced for PC, arrived on March 4, 2025.
GTA 5 release dates on every platform
This table covers every official launch of Grand Theft Auto V. Release dates are for North America and Europe, which launched together each time.
| Platform | Release date | Version name | Console generation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 3 | September 17, 2013 | Original | 7th |
| Xbox 360 | September 17, 2013 | Original | 7th |
| GTA Online (PS3, Xbox 360) | October 1, 2013 | Online launch | 7th |
| PlayStation 4 | November 18, 2014 | Re-release | 8th |
| Xbox One | November 18, 2014 | Re-release | 8th |
| PC (Windows) | April 14, 2015 | Now called Legacy | PC |
| PlayStation 5 | March 15, 2022 | Expanded and Enhanced | 9th |
| Xbox Series X|S | March 15, 2022 | Expanded and Enhanced | 9th |
| PC (Windows) | March 4, 2025 | GTA V Enhanced | PC |
Every single one of those dates fell on a Tuesday. That was the standard day for big North American game releases for most of GTA 5’s life, and Rockstar never broke the pattern, even for the 2025 PC upgrade.
The game has now been sold across three console generations plus two distinct PC builds. Take-Two reports GTA 5 sales past 200 million copies. That puts it among the best-selling games ever made, and the long gap between the first and the latest release explains part of that total.
PS3 and Xbox 360: September 17, 2013

The original Grand Theft Auto V release date was Tuesday, September 17, 2013, on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Rockstar North in Edinburgh led development, with support from other Rockstar studios. The game was released at the standard $59.99 in the US.
From reveal to release date
Rockstar confirmed the game existed on October 25, 2011, and released the first trailer on November 2, 2011. That trailer showed Los Santos and the surrounding countryside, and it confirmed you were going back to Rockstar’s take on Southern California for the first time since GTA San Andreas in 2004.
The game was first pencilled in for spring 2013. On January 31, 2013, Rockstar moved it to September 17, 2013, saying it needed more time to polish the game. That was the only delay the original console version had, and the September date held.
In the months before launch, Rockstar ran a steady drip of reveals. It showed the three playable leads, Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips, in a set of character trailers, then a gameplay video in July 2013. GTA Online got its own reveal in August 2013, a month before the main game came out.
What shipped on day one
The two last-generation versions shipped in different physical formats, and that still matters to collectors and to anyone buying a used copy today:
- PS3: one Blu-ray disc, with a mandatory install of around 8GB to the console’s hard drive.
- Xbox 360: two DVDs. The first was an install disc, the second the play disc. Rockstar recommended installing the first disc for better texture streaming.
There were three editions at launch. The standard edition was the plain game. The Special Edition added a steelbook case, a blueprint map and in-game bonuses such as the Atomic Blimp and extra weapons. The Collector’s Edition added physical items like a duffel bag and cap on top of the Special Edition content. US prices were $79.99 for the Special Edition and $149.99 for the Collector’s Edition.
Launch week records
The September 2013 launch was one of the biggest in entertainment history. Take-Two announced that GTA 5 generated more than $800 million in retail sales in its first 24 hours. Three days after launch, it had crossed $1 billion, which made it the fastest entertainment property to reach that number at the time, ahead of any film or other game.
Guinness World Records later recognised the game with seven records tied to that launch, including the best-selling video game in 24 hours and the fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion.
The Japan release date
If you’re in Japan, the answer to “when did GTA 5 come out” is different. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions launched there on October 10, 2013, a little over three weeks after the West. That staggered Japanese release was normal for the series at the time, because the game went through separate localisation and age rating work for that market.
A late-generation release
The timing looks odd in hindsight. The PlayStation 4 launched in North America on November 15, 2013, and the Xbox One followed on November 22, 2013. GTA 5 arrived about two months before both.
Rockstar chose to ship on hardware that had been on the market since 2005 and 2006, with an installed base of tens of millions of players, rather than wait for new consoles almost nobody owned yet. It paid off commercially. It also set up the game for the re-release a year later, which is part of why GTA 5 has so many release dates in the first place.
GTA Online: October 1, 2013
GTA Online was not part of the September 17 launch. It went live two weeks later, on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, as a free component for anyone who owned GTA 5 on PS3 or Xbox 360.
The first days were rough. Servers buckled under the load, character progress was lost for some players, and Rockstar spent the following weeks on fixes. As compensation, it handed out a stimulus package of 500,000 GTA dollars to players who had logged in during October 2013.
GTA Online on PS3 and Xbox 360 shut down on December 16, 2021. The story mode on those consoles still works offline, so if you dig an old PS3 out of a cupboard, you can still play the campaign from start to finish. You just can’t go online with it.
PS4 and Xbox One: November 18, 2014

The second GTA 5 release date was Tuesday, November 18, 2014, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Rockstar announced the new-generation version at Sony’s E3 press conference in June 2014, with a fall 2014 window for consoles and PC together. The console versions then got their November date, and PC was split off on its own schedule.
This was a full re-release, not a remaster bolted on in a hurry. The headline changes were:
- First-person mode: you could play the whole game, story and Online, from a first-person view. That alone changed how many players experienced Los Santos.
- Higher resolution and draw distance: both consoles ran at 1080p with denser traffic, more pedestrians and more vegetation.
- New wildlife, weather effects and radio content: extra tracks were added to the stations, and the world got more animals and visual detail.
- Returning player bonuses: if you had played on PS3 or Xbox 360 and linked your Rockstar Social Club account, you unlocked exclusive extras including the Dodo seaplane, the Kraken submarine and the Duke O’Death muscle car.
You could also move your GTA Online character and progression from the old consoles to the new ones through the Social Club. That one-time transfer let players carry years of grinding forward instead of starting from zero.
Why it was released again so soon
Only 14 months separated the PS3 and PS4 launches. In practice, Rockstar sold the same game to a large group of players twice, and many of them were happy to pay again for first-person mode and the visual upgrade.
The 2014 version also lasted far longer than the original. The PS4 and Xbox One edition was the main way most people played GTA 5 for the next seven years, and most of GTA Online’s growth happened there.
When did GTA 5 come out for PC? April 14, 2015
GTA 5 came out on PC on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. It was released through the Rockstar Games Launcher’s predecessor, the Social Club client, plus Steam and boxed retail. US pricing was $59.99, the same as the console versions.
The PC version was delayed twice before it arrived, which is why so many players remember it as the version that took forever.
| Announced target | What happened |
|---|---|
| Fall 2014 | Window given at E3 2014 alongside PS4 and Xbox One |
| January 27, 2015 | First firm PC date |
| March 24, 2015 | First delay, for extra polish |
| April 14, 2015 | Second delay, final release date |
Rockstar published the PC system requirements during this stretch. The game was large for 2015: the retail box came on seven DVDs, and the install took about 65GB of disk space.
What the PC version added
The PC build was the most advanced version of the game at release. It added:
- Resolutions up to 4K and support for frame rates above 60fps, with a long list of graphics options.
- The Rockstar Editor, a video editing tool for recording and cutting your own clips. It launched on PC first and later came to PS4 and Xbox One.
- Support for multiple monitors and higher player counts in GTA Online sessions than on last-generation consoles.
The PC version also opened the door to modding. GTA 5 modding grew into one of the biggest scenes in PC gaming, from graphics overhauls to roleplay servers, and if you plan to try it, our guide on how to install GTA 5 mods safely on PC covers the risks before you touch any files.
The Epic Games Store giveaway
PC got one more notable launch moment. Between May 14 and May 21, 2020, the Epic Games Store gave GTA 5 away for free. Demand was so high that the store went down for a period on the first day. Millions of players added the game to their libraries that week, which is one reason so many PC players own it on Epic rather than on Steam.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: March 15, 2022
The fourth GTA 5 release date was Tuesday, March 15, 2022, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar calls this the “Expanded and Enhanced” version.
This one had a longer and bumpier road than any console version before it. Rockstar first announced it in June 2020, during Sony’s PS5 reveal event, with a window of the second half of 2021. Rockstar later set a date of November 11, 2021, then pushed it again to March 2022, before the March 15 date was locked in.
What changed on the new consoles
The 2022 version is the best way to play GTA 5 on console today. Its main improvements:
- Graphics modes: a Fidelity mode with ray-traced effects and 4K output on PS5 and Xbox Series X, a Performance mode targeting 60fps, and a Performance RT mode that blends both. The Xbox Series S has its own scaled-down options.
- Faster loading: the SSDs in the new consoles cut load times sharply compared with the PS4 and Xbox One.
- Controller features: on PS5, the DualSense adds haptic feedback for things like weather and road surfaces, and adaptive triggers for weapons and driving.
- 3D audio on PS5 and spatial audio support on Xbox.
- Hao’s Special Works: new vehicle upgrades and content in GTA Online, available only on the new versions.
GTA Online also became available as a standalone purchase from this release onward, separate from the story mode. On PS5, Rockstar made standalone GTA Online free for the first three months, until June 14, 2022.
No free upgrade from PS4 or Xbox One
There was no automatic free upgrade. Owning GTA 5 on PS4 did not give you the PS5 version, and the same applied on Xbox. You could keep playing the PS4 or Xbox One version through backward compatibility, but you would not get the new graphics modes, the faster loading or the new GTA Online content.
What Rockstar did offer was a migration path. You could move your GTA Online character and progress across to the new consoles, and you could carry your story mode progress over through your Rockstar Games account.
Agent's note
On PS5, check the version you’re launching. The PS4 and PS5 editions can sit side by side in your library, and many players run the old one through backward compatibility without realising it. The PS5 tile is labelled clearly, and that’s the one you want.
GTA V Enhanced for PC: March 4, 2025
The most recent release date is Tuesday, March 4, 2025. That’s when Rockstar released GTA V Enhanced on PC. It brought the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrades to Windows, plus PC-specific features.
The key point for anyone who already owned the game on PC: the upgrade was free. If you owned GTA 5 on Steam, Epic or the Rockstar Games Launcher, you got the Enhanced version at no extra cost.
What Enhanced added to PC
GTA V Enhanced brought the following to PC:
- Ray tracing, including ray-traced shadows, reflections and global illumination.
- Upscaling and frame generation, with support for Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR.
- Faster loading, built around solid-state storage. Rockstar’s listed requirements call for an SSD.
- DualSense support on PC, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
- Hao’s Special Works and other content from the 2022 console versions that had been missing on PC since then.
Legacy and Enhanced side by side
The 2015 PC build did not disappear. Steam and the other stores now list it as Grand Theft Auto V Legacy, and the new build as Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced. If you own the game, you have access to both.
That leaves you with two PC versions released almost a decade apart, both still installable today. For anyone asking “when did GTA 5 come out for PC,” the honest answer has two parts: April 14, 2015 for the original, now called Legacy, and March 4, 2025 for Enhanced.
Quick steps: switch from GTA 5 Legacy to Enhanced on PC
- Open the launcher you bought the game on: Steam, Epic Games Store or the Rockstar Games Launcher.
- Find the separate entry labelled Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced in your library.
- Install it to an SSD, since Rockstar lists solid-state storage as a requirement.
- Launch it and sign in with the same Rockstar Games account you used on Legacy.
- If you play GTA Online, run the one-time character migration when the game offers it.
Anti-cheat and the Steam Deck
One PC change came a few months before Enhanced. In September 2024, Rockstar added BattlEye anti-cheat to GTA Online on PC. That move ended GTA Online support on the Steam Deck and other Linux setups, though the story mode still runs there. If you play on a handheld PC, the campaign is fine, while Online on Linux is off the table.
Platforms GTA 5 never came to
Searches for a GTA 5 release date on platforms Rockstar never supported come up all the time. Here’s the status of each, using the same labels we use for unreleased games.
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch | Not announced |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Not announced |
| iOS and Android (native) | Not announced |
| Wii U | Never released, no longer possible |
| PlayStation Vita | Never released, no longer possible |
| Google Stadia | Never released, service shut down in January 2023 |
Nintendo Switch: still not announced
GTA 5 has never been released on any Nintendo console. Rockstar did bring other games to Switch, including L.A. Noire, the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition and Red Dead Redemption, so the studio clearly works with Nintendo hardware.
Rumors of a Switch or Switch 2 port of GTA 5 surface regularly, usually from anonymous forum posts and accounts with a mixed track record. None of them has been backed up by Rockstar, Take-Two or Nintendo. Treat any “GTA 5 Switch release date” you see as a RUMOR with weak sourcing, and expect the real news to come from Rockstar directly.
Mobile: no native version
There is no native GTA 5 app for iPhone or Android. Any app store listing claiming to be “GTA 5 Mobile” is fake, and many are scams or malware. Rockstar’s mobile releases cover older games like GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and Chinatown Wars, along with the Definitive Edition versions of the trilogy released through Netflix Games.
You can stream GTA 5 to a phone through legitimate cloud and remote play options, such as PlayStation Remote Play from your own PS5. That’s streaming a console or PC game, though, not a mobile release.
Which version applies to what
GTA 5 has seven console versions and two PC builds, and the differences matter more than most players realise. Guides, cheats and mods don’t all apply the same way to every release.
Story mode content is the same everywhere
The story itself, with its 69 main missions, heists and three-protagonist structure, is identical across all versions. Michael’s retirement troubles, Franklin’s rise from Strawberry and Trevor’s chaos in Sandy Shores play out the same way on a PS3 in 2013 as on an RTX-equipped PC running Enhanced in 2025.
Rockstar never released story mode DLC. Expansion plans for the single-player campaign were reportedly shelved, and all post-launch content went into GTA Online instead. So the campaign you get today is the same one players finished in September 2013, just with better graphics and first-person mode added along the way.
Cheat codes work on every version
Cheats are a good example of how stable GTA 5 has stayed across releases. The same button combinations work on PS3, PS4 and PS5, the same Xbox inputs work from Xbox 360 to Series X|S, and the PC typed codes and in-game phone numbers haven’t changed either.
| Cheat | PlayStation | Xbox | PC (type in console) | Phone number |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Super jump | L2, L2, Square, Circle, Circle, L2, Square, Square, Left, Right, X | LT, LT, X, B, B, LT, X, X, Left, Right, A | HOPTOIT | 1-999-467-86-48 |
| Weapons and ammo | Triangle, R2, Left, L1, X, Right, Triangle, Down, Square, L1, L1, L1 | Y, RT, Left, LB, A, Right, Y, Down, X, LB, LB, LB | TOOLUP | 1-999-8665-87 |
On PC, you open the cheat console with the tilde key (~), then type the code. On any platform, you can dial the number on Michael’s, Franklin’s or Trevor’s in-game phone instead of entering buttons.
That table covers just two. For the full list, our guide to every GTA 5 cheat code for story mode has every entry, and there are dedicated pages for GTA 5 PS4 cheats and GTA 5 Xbox cheats with the full button combos. If you grew up entering GTA San Andreas cheats on a PS2 pad, the system will feel familiar, with the phone as a newer shortcut.
Heads up
Cheats only work in story mode. Activating one disables trophies and achievements for that play session, and you can’t save the game while a cheat is active. Reload a clean save before you go trophy hunting.
Mods are a PC thing
Mods only apply to PC, and the version you run decides which ones work. Most of the established mod scene was built around the 2015 Legacy build. Many older script mods and tools need updates before they run on Enhanced, and some never will be updated.
If you want to start with story-mode mods, our list of the best GTA 5 mods for story mode is the place to begin. Keep mods out of GTA Online entirely: Rockstar bans modded clients there, and BattlEye now scans for them on PC.
Online features vary by generation
GTA Online is where the versions differ most:
- PS3 and Xbox 360: Online servers are closed.
- PS4 and Xbox One: Online still runs but lacks Hao’s Special Works and other content limited to newer versions.
- PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced: full current content, including the exclusive vehicle upgrades.
- PC Legacy: still playable online, but it doesn’t get content tied to the Enhanced version.
How each launch was priced
GTA 5 entered the market as a full-price game, and its price has dropped steadily since. Launch prices, all in US dollars:
| Release | Launch price (US) |
|---|---|
| PS3 / Xbox 360 standard (2013) | $59.99 |
| Special Edition (2013) | $79.99 |
| Collector’s Edition (2013) | $149.99 |
| PS4 / Xbox One (2014) | $59.99 |
| PC (2015) | $59.99 |
| PS5 / Xbox Series X|S (2022) | $39.99 |
| PC Enhanced (2025) | Free upgrade for existing PC owners |
Today GTA 5 is one of the most frequently discounted major games on every digital store. Steep sales are routine, and the game has also cycled in and out of subscription services several times. If you’re buying now, it’s rarely worth paying the full current price.
What GTA 5’s release history tells you about GTA 6
GTA 5’s run of release dates is the best available guide to how Rockstar might handle Grand Theft Auto VI. The two situations aren’t identical, but the pattern is hard to ignore.
What we know
Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. At the time of writing, Rockstar’s most recent official date is November 19, 2026, after the game was delayed from fall 2025 and then from May 26, 2026. All of that is CONFIRMED by Rockstar and Take-Two.
A PC version of GTA 6 is Not announced. The GTA 6 price is also Not announced; our article on GTA 6 price tracks what it costs on every platform and edition once Rockstar publishes it.
What is rumored
Speculation about a GTA 6 PC release date comes almost entirely from fan analysis and anonymous posts, and none of it comes from Rockstar or a proven reporter. We grade any specific PC date claim as a RUMOR with weak sourcing until Rockstar says otherwise.
The pattern argument is stronger than any of those claims. GTA 5 hit PC 19 months after consoles. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on consoles on October 26, 2018, and reached PC on November 5, 2019. Rockstar has been consistent: consoles first, PC later.
What it means
If you’re a PC-only player, plan on waiting for GTA 6 after the console launch. That’s an inference from Rockstar’s history, not an announcement, but it’s backed by two consecutive major releases.
There’s another lesson from GTA 5’s history. Rockstar has delayed its biggest launches before, from GTA 5’s slip out of spring 2013 to the PC version’s two pushes and the PS5 version’s long road. A Rockstar release date is firm only once the game ships. Until then, check the date against Rockstar’s own channels and nothing else.
Key dates in GTA 5’s history
For quick reference, here’s the full timeline from reveal to the latest release:
- October 25, 2011: Rockstar confirms Grand Theft Auto V.
- November 2, 2011: First trailer released.
- January 31, 2013: Release moves from spring 2013 to September 17, 2013.
- September 17, 2013: Launch on PS3 and Xbox 360.
- September 20, 2013: Take-Two confirms $1 billion in sales after three days.
- October 1, 2013: GTA Online goes live.
- October 10, 2013: Japanese release on PS3 and Xbox 360.
- June 2014: PS4, Xbox One and PC versions announced at E3.
- November 18, 2014: Launch on PS4 and Xbox One.
- April 14, 2015: Launch on PC after two delays.
- May 14 to 21, 2020: Free on the Epic Games Store.
- June 2020: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions announced.
- December 16, 2021: GTA Online shuts down on PS3 and Xbox 360.
- March 15, 2022: Launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- September 2024: BattlEye anti-cheat added to GTA Online on PC.
- March 4, 2025: GTA V Enhanced released free for PC owners.
That’s a span of more than 11 years from the first launch to the most recent one. Few games have stayed commercially relevant that long, and fewer have been re-released on three console generations.
FAQ
When did GTA 5 come out?
GTA 5 came out on September 17, 2013, on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Japan got it on October 10, 2013. Later versions followed on PS4 and Xbox One (November 18, 2014), PC (April 14, 2015) and PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (March 15, 2022).
When did GTA 5 come out for PC?
The original PC version came out on April 14, 2015, after delays from January 27 and March 24 of that year. The upgraded GTA V Enhanced version for PC came out on March 4, 2025, as a free upgrade for existing owners.
What was the Grand Theft Auto V PS3 release date?
The PS3 version was released on September 17, 2013, the same day as the Xbox 360 version. It shipped on a single Blu-ray disc with a required install of around 8GB.
How old is GTA 5?
GTA 5 turned 10 on September 17, 2023, and passes 12 years old in September 2025. It has been on sale for longer than the gap between GTA III (2001) and GTA 5 itself.
Is GTA 5 coming to Nintendo Switch?
No Switch or Switch 2 version is announced. Rumors circulate regularly, but they come from anonymous sources with a mixed record, and Rockstar, Take-Two and Nintendo have said nothing to confirm them.
Is there a GTA 5 mobile version?
No. There is no official GTA 5 app for iOS or Android, and listings claiming otherwise are fakes. You can stream the game to a phone from your own console or PC using official remote play options.
Did GTA 5 ever get story mode DLC?
No. Rockstar never released single-player expansions for GTA 5. All post-launch content went into GTA Online, so the story mode is the same 69-mission campaign on every version.
Do I need to buy GTA 5 again for PS5?
Yes, if you want the PS5 features. There was no free upgrade from PS4. You can play the PS4 version on a PS5 through backward compatibility, but you won’t get the new graphics modes, faster loading or Online content added in 2022.
Is GTA V Enhanced free on PC?
Yes, for anyone who already owns GTA 5 on PC through Steam, Epic or the Rockstar Games Launcher. Enhanced appears as a separate entry in your library next to the Legacy version, and you can install either one.
Which version of GTA 5 should I play today?
On console, play the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version. On PC, play Enhanced unless you rely on older mods that only work on Legacy. Either way, the story is identical, so choose based on hardware and mods.
