Dutch van der Linde profile

Dutch van der Linde leads the outlaw gang at the heart of Red Dead Redemption 2. He is the charismatic father figure who raised Arthur Morgan and John Marston, preached freedom from a modernizing America, and slowly led almost everyone who trusted him to their deaths. He also returns as the final antagonist of the original Red Dead Redemption, which makes him the one character whose fall you watch from both ends.

Who Dutch van der Linde is

Dutch is an outlaw who sees himself as a revolutionary. In his own telling, the Van der Linde gang robs the rich, protects the weak, and lives free of the government, the railroads and the Pinkertons. In practice the gang robs, kills and runs, and the noble framing gets thinner every chapter.

What makes Dutch work as a character is that he never stops believing the speech. He has dark hair, a neat mustache and a tailored vest, and he dresses like a politician. He talks like one too. He reads philosophy, quotes it at dinner, and convinces a camp of drifters, orphans and runaways that they are a family with a cause.

Rockstar wrote him as a man whose ideals were real once and whose ego outlived them. By 1899 the frontier is closing, and Dutch cannot accept that his way of life is ending. Everything that goes wrong in Red Dead Redemption 2 flows from that refusal.

Most of what you learn about Dutch’s past comes from camp conversations, so treat it as his version of events.

  • Hosea Matthews. The gang’s co-founder and Dutch’s oldest friend. The two met as young con men about two decades before the game begins. Hosea is the brake on Dutch’s worst instincts, and the gang loses that brake when Hosea dies in Saint Denis.
  • Arthur Morgan. Dutch and Hosea took Arthur in as a teenager and raised him as a son. By 1899 Arthur is Dutch’s most dedicated enforcer.
  • John Marston. Dutch saved John from a hanging when John was 12 and brought him into the gang. That debt shapes John’s guilt in both games.
  • Annabelle. The woman Dutch loved. She was killed by Colm O’Driscoll after Dutch killed Colm’s brother, which kicked off the blood feud that runs through RDR2.

Dutch also mentions that his father died fighting in the Civil War, and he talks about his mother with real affection. Those details matter less as trivia than as a pattern: Dutch keeps describing himself as a man shaped by loss and loyalty, and the game lets you decide how much of it you believe.

Dutch in Red Dead Redemption 2, chapter by chapter

The best way to understand Dutch in RDR2 is to track where the gang camps and what he is selling at each stop. If you want the regions themselves laid out, our Red Dead Redemption 2 map with every region covers the geography.

Chapter Camp What Dutch is doing
Prologue (Colter) Abandoned mining town in the Grizzlies Holding the gang together after the Blackwater ferry job collapses
Chapter 2 Horseshoe Overlook Promising one big score and a quiet life
Chapter 3 Clemens Point Playing the Grays and Braithwaites against each other in Rhodes
Chapter 4 Shady Belle Chasing money in Saint Denis, getting drawn to the city’s power brokers
Chapter 5 Guarma Stranded after the bank job fails, still talking about the plan
Chapter 6 Beaver Hollow Paranoid, siding with Micah, cutting loose anyone who questions him

The Blackwater ferry job

The game opens in the aftermath. Dutch shot a woman named Heidi McCourt during the ferry robbery in Blackwater, the job went bad, and the gang fled into the mountains with lawmen on its trail and a stash of money left behind. Dutch never gives a straight account of why he pulled the trigger. That silence is your first clue about him.

“I have a plan”

Through Chapters 2 to 4, Dutch repeats a handful of promises. One more job. Enough money to disappear. Tahiti, where the gang can live on mangoes and sunlight. He tells Arthur to have faith, over and over, and the line becomes a running joke for players because the plan never arrives.

The Saint Denis bank robbery is where the plan breaks for good. Hosea dies in the street, Lenny dies on the rooftops, and the survivors escape by ship to Guarma. When they return to America, the man who comes back is harder and colder.

Revenge and the Wapiti

Dutch’s methods escalate after Guarma. Earlier in Chapter 4 he had already drowned the Saint Denis crime boss Angelo Bronte and fed him to the alligators, which tells you what he’s willing to do when his pride is hurt. In Chapter 6, he encourages the Wapiti and Eagle Flies, son of Chief Rains Fall, to fight the U.S. Army. Dutch frames it as solidarity. Arthur sees it as using a people’s desperation as a diversion, and Eagle Flies pays with his life.

Agent's note

Pay attention to who Dutch addresses during his speeches in Chapter 6. Early on he speaks to the whole camp; late in the game he increasingly speaks to Micah, and the camera framing quietly follows that shift.

Why Dutch breaks: our read

Fans have argued about this for years. One popular theory ties Dutch’s decline to a knock on the head he takes midway through the story. Others say Micah Bell poisoned him. Our position is simpler: the rot was always there, and the pressure of 1899 exposed it.

Look at the evidence the game gives you before anything goes wrong in Saint Denis:

  1. He kills a civilian at Blackwater and never explains it.
  2. His feud with Colm O’Driscoll began when Dutch killed Colm’s brother.
  3. He plays both feuding families in Rhodes for profit, and the fallout costs the gang Jack Marston’s temporary kidnapping and a bloody raid on Braithwaite Manor.
  4. He leans on Hosea to run the cons and on Arthur to do the violence, while keeping his own hands looking clean.

Hosea’s death removed the one person who could tell Dutch no. Micah filled the space by telling him yes. That reading also explains why Dutch never looks surprised by himself. He has a speech ready for every betrayal, because he has been rationalizing for years.

Key relationships

Dutch is defined by the people around him. Here is how his most important bonds end.

Character Relationship How it ends
Hosea Matthews Oldest friend, co-founder Killed by Pinkerton agent Andrew Milton in Saint Denis
Arthur Morgan Surrogate son, right hand Dutch walks away from Arthur on the mountain in the final mission
John Marston Surrogate son Dutch leaves John behind during the last heist; they meet again in 1911
Micah Bell New confidant Revealed as the Pinkerton informant; Dutch turns on him in 1907 and John kills him
Molly O’Shea Partner in camp Dutch ignores her; she is shot at Beaver Hollow after claiming she talked to the law
Annabelle Lost love Killed by Colm O’Driscoll before the game begins

Dutch and Arthur

The emotional core of RDR2 is Arthur realizing that the man who raised him is a fraud. Arthur’s illness forces him to look at what he has done in Dutch’s name, and every mission where Dutch hesitates, lies or abandons someone chips away at that loyalty. For the full arc from Arthur’s side, see our Arthur Morgan profile covering his history, personality and story.

In the final confrontation, Arthur appeals directly to Dutch. Dutch says nothing that matters. He simply leaves, letting Micah finish the job or letting Arthur die on his own, depending on your ending. Rockstar never gives him a clean redemption moment, and that restraint is why the scene lands.

Dutch and Micah

Micah is the voice telling Dutch what he wants to hear. Dutch defends him against Arthur, John, Sadie and Charles, and sides with him on the mountain. It takes the 1907 epilogue for Dutch to act on the truth.

The epilogue: American Venom

The final mission of RDR2’s epilogue, American Venom, takes place in 1907 at Micah’s hideout on Mount Hagen. John, Sadie Adler and Charles Smith track Micah down and find Dutch already there, apparently riding with him.

In the standoff, Dutch turns his guns on Micah, and John delivers the killing shots. Dutch then picks up nothing, says nothing, and walks out. John uses the gang’s old money stash to pay off the mortgage on Beecher’s Hope. That final silent exit sets up everything you see in the original game.

Heads up

American Venom is the last story mission of RDR2. Finishing it doesn’t end free roam, but the epilogue character conversations and some strangers are tied to playing it in order, so wrap up any epilogue side content you care about first.

Dutch in Red Dead Redemption (2010)

In the original game, set in 1911, John Marston is forced by Edgar Ross and the Bureau of Investigation to hunt his former gang. Bill Williamson and Javier Escuella come first. Dutch is the last name on the list.

By now Dutch is leading a band of Native American men in West Elizabeth, using the same language about freedom and resistance he used in 1899. If you’ve played RDR2 first, it reads as a direct echo of what he did with the Wapiti: an outsider pulling a desperate group into a war that serves his own purpose. Rockstar wrote RDR2 a decade later and deliberately built those parallels backward into his history.

The final confrontation happens on a cliff edge. Cornered and wounded, Dutch tells John that when he is gone, the government will find another monster to justify their wages. Then he steps backward off the cliff. It is the only time in either game that Dutch makes a decision without dressing it up in a speech.

How the two portrayals line up

  • 1899 Dutch is warm, eloquent and believable, which is why the gang follows him.
  • 1907 Dutch is silent and hollow, a man who has stopped performing.
  • 1911 Dutch has found a new audience and a new speech, but no new ideas.

Benjamin Byron Davis voiced and performed Dutch in both games, which is part of why the arc feels continuous even though the games were released eight years apart.

Philosophy, books and speeches

Dutch quotes the fictional writer Evelyn Miller, a philosopher in the Red Dead world whose ideas about nature and freedom Dutch treats as scripture. Miller’s ideas give Dutch’s speeches their shape: civilization corrupts, the wild is honest, and the gang’s lawlessness is a kind of virtue.

Pay attention and you’ll notice Dutch recycles phrases. Lines about loyalty, faith and the plan show up again in different contexts, often aimed at whoever he needs to keep on side that week. Rockstar is showing you that his rhetoric is a tool, built in advance and redeployed. Many players miss this on a first run because the delivery is so convincing.

Weapons, horse and look

  • Guns. Dutch favors twin Schofield revolvers, carried in a double holster, which suits his showman image.
  • Horse. He rides The Count, a striking white stallion, and you’ll see him with it at nearly every camp.
  • Outfit. Black hair slicked back, a mustache, and a vest over a white shirt. He dresses better than anyone else in camp, and the game wants you to notice.

As for Dutch’s future, Red Dead Redemption 3 is Not announced by Rockstar or Take-Two. Any talk of a prequel revisiting the gang’s early years is speculation, and our Red Dead Redemption 3 release date rumors piece tracks what has actually been said.

FAQ

Is Dutch van der Linde the villain of Red Dead Redemption 2?

He’s the game’s tragic antagonist. Micah Bell is the more direct villain and the informant, but Dutch’s choices drive the gang’s collapse. RDR2 shows him as a leader who slowly turns into the threat he warned everyone about.

Who voices Dutch in Red Dead Redemption 2?

Benjamin Byron Davis provides the voice and performance capture for Dutch in both Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2.

How does Dutch die?

In Red Dead Redemption (2010), set in 1911, John Marston corners him on a cliff in West Elizabeth. Dutch delivers a final warning about the government and deliberately steps off the edge.

Does Dutch kill Micah?

No. In the RDR2 epilogue mission American Venom, set in 1907, Dutch turns his guns on Micah during the standoff on Mount Hagen, but John Marston delivers the killing shots. Dutch then walks away without a word.

Did Dutch betray Arthur?

Yes, through abandonment rather than a single act. He leaves John behind during the final heist, sides with Micah over Arthur, and walks away from Arthur on the mountain in the last mission.

What is Dutch’s plan?

It changes every chapter, which is the point. He promises one last score, then escape to Tahiti. No plan ever materializes, and “I have a plan” became the most quoted line in the game for exactly that reason.

How old is Dutch in RDR2?

Rockstar never puts an exact age on screen. Dialogue about his history with Hosea, Arthur and John places him in his forties in 1899.
