Where GTA 6 takes place: the state of Leonida explained
Grand Theft Auto VI takes place in Leonida, a fictional state modelled on Florida, with the neon metropolis of Vice City standing in for Miami. Rockstar confirmed the setting with the first trailer in December 2023 and named six distinct regions in May 2025. Here is what the state looks like, what is still rumor, and why the choice matters.
What we know
Rockstar has never been coy about where GTA 6 takes place. The first trailer opened on Lucia in a prison intake, and the state name appears in her official bio, which says fighting for her family landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary. The second trailer and the Rockstar website then filled in the geography with real detail.
Leonida is Florida, by another name
Every HD-era GTA swaps a real American state for a fictional one. Liberty City sits in the state of Liberty, Los Santos in San Andreas, and now Vice City sits in Leonida. Florida does not exist in GTA’s world, which is why the question “does Florida exist in GTA?” has a short answer: no. The name itself nods to Juan Ponce de León, the explorer who named Florida in 1513.
The 3D-era Vice City of 2002 and Vice City Stories in 2006 placed the city in Florida itself, with license plates and in-game references naming the real state. Leonida is a new piece of the universe, and it is the first time Rockstar has built a full Florida analogue rather than a single city.
The six confirmed regions
Rockstar’s website, updated alongside the second gta 6 trailer on May 6, 2025, listed six regions with short descriptions. We have paired each with the real place it most clearly borrows from.
| Region | Rockstar’s framing | Real-world inspiration |
|---|---|---|
| Vice City | Coastal metropolis, beaches, skyline, nightlife | Miami and Miami Beach |
| Leonida Keys | Laid-back island chain, boats, drug running | Florida Keys |
| Grassrivers | Wetlands, airboats, alligators | The Everglades |
| Port Gellhorn | Faded beach town, bikers, cheap motels | Florida Panhandle beach towns |
| Ambrosia | Rural interior, sugar industry | Lake Okeechobee sugar belt |
| Mount Kalaga National Park | Backwoods, hunting, mud trucks | North Florida forest and ridge country |
Vice City is the anchor. The trailers show the Ocean Drive-style art deco strip, high-rise condos, a causeway crossing turquoise water and a club scene that fits the city’s history. Boobie Ike’s businesses, including the Jack of Hearts strip club and Only Raw Records, are all based here.
The Leonida Keys are where Jason Duval lives, in a trailer on drug runner Brian Heder’s property. Expect low bridges, mangroves and go-fast boats. Grassrivers delivers the swamp, with airboats skimming sawgrass and plenty of reptiles. Port Gellhorn is the state’s run-down side, a boardwalk town with motels and a biker presence, and Trailer 2 spent a surprising amount of time there.
Ambrosia is farmland. Signage for Ambrosia Sugar appears in the second trailer, which matches the cane fields south of Lake Okeechobee. Mount Kalaga National Park is the oddity, since Florida has no mountains, but Rockstar’s description leans on hunting, fishing and the Thrillbilly Mud Club rather than alpine scenery. Think forest, lakes and lifted trucks.
Who we meet across the state
Rockstar named eight principal characters and tied each to a place. Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval are the protagonists and the game’s couple. Cal Hampton is Jason’s conspiracy-minded friend who watches Weazel News from home. Raul Bautista is a veteran bank robber. Dre’Quan Priest is an aspiring music mogul, and the duo Real Dimez, Bae-Luxe and Roxy, are the rap act he is pushing. Boobie Ike and Brian Heder anchor the Vice City and Keys crime scenes respectively.
Agent's note
Rockstar’s character pages double as a geography lesson. Read where each character works and you get a rough map of which regions carry missions: Vice City for Boobie Ike, the Keys for Heder and Jason, and the backwoods for the Thrillbilly Mud Club crowd.
Platforms and timing
The game is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two moved the date twice, first to May 26, 2026 and then, in November 2025, to November 19, 2026. No PC version has been announced. We track every shift in our piece on the release date for gta 6.
What is rumored

Plenty of claims about Leonida circulate with no Rockstar stamp on them. Here is how we grade the big ones.
The map grows after launch. RUMOR. Jason Schreier at Bloomberg reported in July 2022 that development had focused on Vice City and its surroundings, with plans to expand the map through updates over time. Schreier’s track record is strong, but the report is years old and Rockstar has said nothing about post-launch expansion. We rate it plausible but unconfirmed.
Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA 5’s map. RUMOR. Fan cartographers behind the community gta 6 mapping project have stitched trailer frames, leaked 2022 footage and in-game coordinates into a projection that dwarfs Los Santos and Blaine County. The method is impressive, and the Mount Kalaga to Vice City distances suggest a long state, but scale estimates from marketing footage are inherently soft. Plausible, with wide error bars.
Multiple cities beyond Vice City. RUMOR. The 2022 hack footage was almost entirely Vice City, which led insiders including Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming to argue the state has one true city plus smaller towns. Port Gellhorn and the named regions support that reading. Nothing confirms a second large city.
The map stretches to Cuba or other states. No credible source. Boat and ocean shots in Trailer 2 sparked the theory, but Rockstar’s own region list stops at Leonida’s borders. We treat this as speculation.
Leaked “official” Leonida maps. DEBUNKED. Every full-state map image shared as official since 2023 is either a fan projection or a hoax. Rockstar has not released one.
Heads up
Sites offering a “leaked Leonida map download” or early access to the state are scams, often bundling malware. Rockstar’s only official sources are its website, Newswire and social channels.
What it means

A full state changes the game’s rhythm. GTA 5 gave us one city and one rural county. Leonida promises a city, an island chain, a swamp, a beach town, farmland and forest, and the two trailers suggest each has its own economy and look. Our breakdown of the gta 6 map goes region by region on landmarks spotted so far.
Returning to Vice City carries weight too. The 2002 game set Rockstar’s commercial trajectory, and a 1980s-tinted memory of that city is baked into the fanbase. Leonida’s version is contemporary, with phones, social feeds and a Florida Man strain of absurdity that Rockstar has already leaned into through the Thrillbilly Mud Club and Cal Hampton’s conspiracy habit.
The regional spread also reads like a Grand Theft Auto Online plan. A state with this many distinct zones is built to host years of content, and if Schreier’s expansion report holds, Leonida could keep growing well beyond November 2026.
For anyone still asking where GTA 6 is based, the practical answer is this: a Florida-shaped state with Miami at its heart, swamp and farmland inland, islands to the south and faded beach towns up the coast. The exact edges of that state remain the one thing Rockstar has not shown us.
FAQ

Where does GTA 6 take place?
In the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida. Vice City, modelled on Miami, is the main urban area, surrounded by five other confirmed regions.
Is Vice City a city or a state in GTA 6?
Vice City is the city. Leonida is the state it sits in, just as Los Santos sits in the state of San Andreas.
Does Florida exist in GTA?
No. Rockstar replaces real states with fictional ones. Leonida fills Florida’s place in the HD universe.
How big is the Leonida map?
Rockstar has not said. Community projections put it well above GTA 5’s map, but every size figure in circulation is a fan estimate rather than official data.
Is Mount Kalaga a real mountain?
No, and neither is there one in Florida. Rockstar describes Mount Kalaga National Park as backwoods wilderness for hunting, fishing and mud trucks, not a mountain range.
Will the map include other states or Cuba?
Nothing credible supports that. Rockstar’s region list covers Leonida only, and ocean shots in the trailers are not evidence of extra territory.
