GTA 6 had a ‘dark period’ with unclear vision, Rob Nelson tells Bloomberg
CONFIRMED
Rob Nelson, one of Rockstar’s three heads of development, told Bloomberg that GTA VI went through “a dark period” when the game’s vision was not yet clear. The comment anchors Jason Schreier’s October 14, 2026 making-of feature, which Bloomberg says covers more than eight years of work and two delays. A crunch claim circulating alongside it comes from a different person, about a different game.
What we know
Bloomberg’s feature, “To Make GTA VI, Rockstar Had To Remake Itself,” is based on a visit to Rockstar North and interviews with the studio’s senior leaders. The “dark period” line belongs to Nelson specifically. He shares the development lead with Aaron Garbut and Phil Hooker. It is not a collective statement from Rockstar staff.
Bloomberg reports several causes. The pandemic cut productivity and halted Rockstar’s performance-capture work. Rapid hiring made communication harder. Some senior designers quit over what they saw as a lack of progress. Nelson said keeping a team together through that was “really challenging.”
By 2022, Bloomberg says, enough pieces existed to see the full picture. Hooker described the pattern as “very familiar.” That same year a major leak exposed unfinished footage of the game.
On crunch, a secondary summary of the Bloomberg piece published by VGTimes says Rockstar revised its scheduling and overtime compensation policies. The summary does not say crunch was eliminated. We could not read the original passage, so treat this detail as provisional.
Bloomberg also reports that Rockstar’s leaders vow their next release won’t take another eight years. They describe GTA VI’s engine, tools and team as a foundation for faster content production.
The longer timeline, per Bloomberg, starts with a 2015 research trip to Miami under the codename “Project Americas.” Most of the studio then moved onto Red Dead Redemption 2, and full development began after that game launched in 2018. The outline of the Jason and Lucia story was in place by the end of 2019. TechRadar reports that co-founder Dan Houser left in 2020, after which Nelson, Hooker and Garbut shared the lead. Rockstar’s headcount grew from 2,441 in 2018 to 4,711 in 2026, per Bloomberg as summarized by VGTimes.
What we don’t know yet

Bloomberg has not, in the material available to us, put exact dates on the dark period. We have not verified the original wording of the overtime passage.
The budget remains undisclosed. Per the secondary summary, Rockstar rejected the rumor that costs exceeded $1.5 billion, while Schreier suggests the figure may top $1 billion.
What is rumored

Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar North technical director, posted a long retrospective on X around October 22, 2026, the 25th anniversary of GTA III. GamesRadar’s headline pairs it with his saying he doesn’t remember much crunch across 25 years of the series. We rate this grade D. It is a named first-person recollection, not a Rockstar statement, and we could not verify the full crunch wording. PC Gamer gives his tenure as 1995 to 2009, so he did not work on GTA 6. Vermeij also says GTA III was “in a sorry state” for most of development, crashing often, running poorly and riddled with map holes, until it came together in the last six months.
Schreier, in a YouTube video relayed by TechRadar on October 20, 2026, said months to years of weapon-wheel redesign experiments were part of the “dark periods” that “led to some problems for the game.” Schreier has a strong track record, but this is his own characterization, passed along secondhand. We grade it D until checked against the video.
What it means

The framing that “Rockstar developers” describe a dark period while a “veteran” reports little crunch merges two unrelated stories. Nelson spoke to Bloomberg about GTA VI. Vermeij wrote about his own era, which ended in 2009. Neither source supports a claim that GTA 6 had no crunch.
The crunch question stays open. In 2024 Rockstar mandated five office days a week, citing productivity and security. Tom’s Guide cites a Bloomberg-reviewed internal email for the mandate, and developers told Aftermath they feared a return to crunch culture. Revised overtime pay, if the summary holds, is not the same as no overtime.
What the record does show is a studio that stalled and recovered, a pattern Hooker called familiar and Vermeij describes on GTA III. Schreier writes that the November 19, 2026 release appears on track, with the caveat that nothing is certain until it runs on your machine.
