GTA 6 review embargo reportedly lifts Nov. 18, a day before launch
RUMOR
A leak claims the Grand Theft Auto VI review embargo lifts on Wednesday, November 18, 2026, one day before the game’s confirmed November 19 launch. The same unverified source says some outlets may be held until launch day itself. Rockstar has not announced any embargo date, so treat every review timeline below as rumor.
What we know
Rockstar confirmed in a Newswire post dated November 6, 2025 that Grand Theft Auto VI releases on Thursday, November 19, 2026. That date followed two delays, first from Fall 2025 to May 26, 2026, then to November.
Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive announced on June 24, 2026 that the game launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at $79.99. Pre-orders opened June 25.
Take-Two’s investor relations page carries the pre-order announcement, which says digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 12, 2026. The announcement text we reviewed does not mention review copies, press access or a review embargo. That is our reading of the document, not a Rockstar statement.
On October 24, Tech-Insider noted that Rockstar had announced no embargo date or time and called the leak unconfirmed.
What is rumored

On October 23, a ResetEra poster called BlackBate claimed the embargo ends November 18, with Metacritic scores going live around 12:01 to 1:01 PM CET, or 6 to 7 AM EST. Notebookcheck relayed the post. BlackBate is a single forum poster with no record we could verify, and no named outlet or document backs the specific times. Tech-Insider says the claim “sits further from the source” than Insider Gaming’s earlier report.
BlackBate also claims certain sites or YouTube channels may have to wait until 6:01 CET, 12:01 AM EST, on November 19. Mezha, which also covered the post, says the reason for the split is unclear. It floats two theories: written reviews go first, or larger publications get priority. Neither is confirmed.
BlackBate further suspects there will be no hands-on previews, claiming content creators were invited to watch gameplay but not play it. That is speculation from the same unverified source.
Earlier, on October 14, Insider Gaming reported that GTA 6 reviews would go live before release. Per Notebookcheck and ResetEra, the outlet said it knew a preliminary embargo date but withheld it because it could change. Notebookcheck says the article has since been deleted. No reason has been given, and the deletion is not a confirmed retraction. Rockstar has not confirmed the report.
On review copies, NateTheHate posted on ResetEra on October 14 that codes were not out yet but would ship before the end of October. Secondary outlets describe him as a proven leaker; we have not verified that record independently. BlackBate’s sources put digital Xbox and PS5 codes in the week of October 26 or early November. The two timelines do not quite match.
What we don’t know yet

Rockstar has not announced an embargo date, a time, or whether one embargo applies to all outlets. Nobody has confirmed when review codes ship, or whether they have shipped.
It is also unknown why Insider Gaming’s report came down, and whether the reported launch-day hold for some outlets exists at all.
One structural point: getting a code early does not mean publishing early. Reviewers can hold copies for weeks and still be barred from posting until the embargo lifts. The code date and the review date are separate questions.
What it means

If the Nov. 18 rumor is accurate, reviews and aggregate scores would land on a Wednesday morning in the US, roughly a day before launch. That would match Rockstar’s recent pattern. IGN published its GTA V review on September 16, 2013, the day before launch, and its Red Dead Redemption 2 review on October 25, 2018, also a day ahead. A pattern is not confirmation.
For buyers, the practical takeaway is narrow. Pre-loading opens November 12, before any rumored review date. Anyone who wants to read reviews first will likely get a short window, possibly a day, and possibly less for some outlets if the launch-day split is real.
Until Rockstar or a reviewing outlet confirms a date, the only firm timestamp on the board is November 19.
