PS5 14.20 update rumored to target GTA 6 hacks, Sony notes cite only usability fixes
RUMOR
Sony has pushed PS5 system software 26.07-14.20.00, and parts of the internet have decided it exists to lock down jailbroken consoles before GTA 6 arrives. Sony’s own patch notes, as quoted by GameSpot, say nothing of the kind. They cite improved messages and usability on some screens, and that is the full extent of the official record.
What we know
GameSpot reports that update 26.07-14.20.00 went out on October 21, 2026. Quoting Sony’s patch notes, the outlet says the update improves messages and usability on some screens. No exploit is named. No game is named.
GameSpot also reports that the exploit known as “Relapse” works only on firmware older than 14.00.00, which released on September 16. That range comes from GameSpot’s reporting, not from Sony. Sony has never said any update was built to stop a specific exploit.
The previous update, 26.06-14.10.00, landed on October 1. Sony’s notes for that one mentioned security fixes to the system software along with performance and stability improvements, again without naming a target.
On the game side, Insider Gaming reports that Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reaffirmed on an earnings call that GTA 6 is still scheduled for November 19, 2026.
What is rumored

The most specific claim comes from PlayStation Game Size (@PlaystationSize), a known PlayStation Store backend tracker. In early October, the account posted that, according to datamined information, GTA 6 requires at least PS5 firmware 14.10.00.00. Its data is usually verifiable but unofficial, and neither Rockstar nor Sony has confirmed it. Even if accurate, it is not established that such a requirement would block jailbroken consoles.
On October 19, PS5 exploit developer Gezine posted a video on X showing a console on 14.10.00.03, as reported by TweakTown and Notebookcheck. Chris Mizo shared the clip and declared 14.10 jailbroken. The exploit reportedly unlocks Debug Settings only, is not public, and has not been independently verified. A working hypervisor bypass for 14.xx firmware is reported as unavailable.
From there the speculation compounds. GameSpot relays users on the PS5 jailbreak subreddit who suggest 14.20 may quietly plug jailbreak holes and that Sony could make it mandatory for GTA 6. Dataminer videotech posted on X that Sony appears to be tightening security ahead of launch, an inference from 14.00 and 14.10 rather than any Sony statement. Pirat_Nation posted that Sony “probably” patched the jailbreak with 14.20 and stated plainly that nothing is confirmed. Aggregators GameGPU and economy.pk ran headlines saying 14.20 targets GTA 6 hacks and blocks Relapse. Only the headlines could be checked, and the economy.pk piece rewrites the PlayStation Game Size datamine. All of these sit at grade D.
What we don’t know yet

Whether 14.20 contains any security changes at all. Sony’s notes do not say so.
Whether GTA 6 will require a minimum firmware version, and if so which one. The 14.10 figure is a datamine, not an announcement.
Whether any firmware requirement would affect piracy or hacking in practice. No source on the table establishes that.
What it means

For the ordinary player, the question of whether to update before launch has a dull answer. Nothing official says 14.20 is required for GTA 6. If the PlayStation Game Size datamine holds, a console on 14.10 or newer would already meet the reported bar, and 14.20 sits above it. Sony describes this patch as a usability tweak, and nothing in the record suggests a reason to avoid it.
For the jailbreak scene, the picture is mostly inference stacked on inference. The confirmed facts are a firmware cutoff for one exploit, as reported by GameSpot, and a run of three updates in roughly five weeks. The rest is forum chatter and headlines without supporting text.
The pattern of frequent updates ahead of a very large release is real. The claim that Sony built 14.20 for GTA 6 is not. Until Sony or Rockstar says otherwise, treat it as speculation with a convenient calendar.
