Rockstar UK staff to vote on union recognition across GTA 6 launch week, IWGB says

CONFIRMED

Rockstar’s UK developers will vote on establishing a union with the IWGB between November 12 and 26, 2026, Kotaku reports, citing an IWGB press release. The ballot window runs straight through GTA 6’s November 19 launch. The dates come from the union, and the available reporting does not include a direct Rockstar or Take-Two statement confirming them.

What we know

According to Kotaku’s report on the IWGB release, a successful vote would make this the largest recognized union in the UK video game sector. That framing is the union’s.

The union says, per Kotaku, that workers have been meeting Rockstar management since July 2026 to negotiate a recognition deal. The IWGB says such a deal would give staff a say on pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working and generative AI policies.

Workers had asked Rockstar to recognize the union voluntarily before GTA 6 shipped. Kotaku first reported that request on June 30, 2026. At the time, the union said it represented “a significant proportion” of staff across the Edinburgh, Dundee, Lincoln, Leeds and London offices. Rockstar said it would arrange to meet union representatives. Voluntary recognition did not happen, and Kotaku reports the question has now gone to a vote.

Management has spoken on the subject once on the record. In Bloomberg’s feature “The Making of Grand Theft Auto VI,” published around October 14, 2026, Jason Schreier asked Rockstar head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe about voluntary recognition. She said: “We go where the team goes. So if they want a union, they will have a union.”

The vote takes place against an unresolved legal fight. In late October 2025, Rockstar fired 34 workers, 31 in the UK and 3 in Canada. Kotaku reports that an employment tribunal over the dismissal of 31 union-effort participants is ongoing, with closing submissions expected November 17 and 18, 2026. Rockstar says the 31 were fired for “gross misconduct, and for no other reason.” The union alleges union busting.

In a statement to Bloomberg, relayed by The Register, Rockstar said staff had been found distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum. Rockstar said the action was “in no way related” to people’s right to join a union. A later TechRadar report says the tribunal did not order the interim relief the union sought at a January 2026 preliminary hearing in Glasgow.

Kotaku, reporting on the tribunal hearings, says a claim surfaced that a “mole” in the union’s Discord server leaked union secrets to Rockstar in exchange for time off. Kotaku is a major outlet relaying what was said in proceedings. The claim is an allegation made in evidence. The tribunal has not ruled on it, and it should not be read as an established finding.

The ballot result is pending, and no outcome has been reported.

Rockstar and Take-Two have not, in the reporting available to us, commented directly on the ballot or its dates. It is also unclear whether Kolbe’s October remarks reflect a commitment to recognize the union if the vote succeeds.

The tribunal’s decision on the 31 dismissals is still outstanding. No ruling date has been reported beyond the expected closing submissions.

What it means

For Rockstar’s UK workforce, a yes vote would move pay, overtime, redundancies and AI policy from management’s discretion into formal negotiation. That would happen at a studio long associated, in public reporting, with demanding production cycles. If the IWGB’s framing holds, it would also set a benchmark for the UK games industry as a whole.

On the launch itself, nothing in the reporting connects the ballot to GTA 6’s release schedule. The overlap is one of timing. Within a single week, the tribunal is expected to hear closing submissions on November 17 and 18, the game is scheduled to ship on November 19, and the ballot is open throughout.

The cleanest test is Kolbe’s own line. The union’s members are being asked where the team wants to go. The result will show whether management’s stated position survives contact with the answer.
