GTA 6 is a month out and PS5 Pro stock is reportedly drying up, CNET says

RUMOR

A CNET headline surfacing on Oct 18 reads “GTA 6 Is Wiping Out PS5 Pro Stock a Month Before Launch.” We could not retrieve CNET’s article text, only the headline via Google News and near-identical rewrites that lean on an unconfirmed Sony memo first reported by Playfront.de. What is confirmed: Take-Two’s SEC-filed earnings release puts Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, roughly one month from today.

What we know

Take-Two’s Form 8-K earnings release for Q1 FY2027 lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with a November 19, 2026 release date. It does not list a PC version. Rockstar has not announced one.

Take-Two held a short shareholder meeting on Sept 17, 2026. Kotaku reported that CEO Strauss Zelnick fielded investor questions, most of them about GTA 6, including one on delays and management. According to GamesRadar and GTABoom, a shareholder also asked whether the PS5 Pro shortage was changing PC delivery. Zelnick treated it as a general question about PC launch cadence, said Take-Two launches on platforms with “a meaningful audience,” and did not confirm a GTA 6 PC version.

On pricing, GTA Intel’s history puts the PS5 Pro at $699.99 at its November 2024 launch, $749.99 from Aug 21, 2025, and $899.99 from Apr 2, 2026. Sony’s Isabelle Tomatis cited “continued pressures in the global economic landscape” for the increase, per GTA Intel’s quoted statement.

The stock picture comes from outlets outside our confirmed-source list, so treat it as context. Between Aug 28 and 31, GamesRadar, VideoCardz, GHacks, TweakTown and PC Guide reported the PS5 Pro selling out at Best Buy and Target, with Amazon and Walmart listing it only through third-party sellers at about $1,299 and resale prices reaching $1,300 to $1,499. PlayStation Direct was briefly the only retailer at the $899.99 list price. That window followed Rockstar’s “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,” which premiered on Netflix and YouTube on Aug 27. VideoCardz noted there is no sales data tying the demand to the Extended Look, and Target had restocked at list price by then.

Notebookcheck reported the console back in stock on the PlayStation Store on Sept 4, though the stock reportedly did not last. On Sept 17, Tom’s Guide’s restock tracker, as relayed by GTA Intel, showed the PS5 Pro out of stock at Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target and PlayStation Direct. GamesRadar found it unavailable on PlayStation Direct in nine European countries on Sept 16.

Separately, Notebookcheck relayed Sony CFO Lin Tao’s comment on a Q3 earnings call that Sony had secured the minimum memory needed for next fiscal year’s year-end selling season. Engadget and BGR tie the broader hardware squeeze to the AI-driven memory and chip shortage, and Engadget says GTA 6 will likely make it worse.

Playfront.de, a German outlet, reported exclusively in mid-to-late September that Sony sent distributors a memo blaming “temporary market supply constraints and high demand” for PS5 Pro shortages, with the memo reportedly saying the shortage will last “through early 2027 at the earliest.” Engadget, BGR and PlayStation LifeStyle amplified the claim. We found no verified track record for Playfront, no published memo, and no Sony statement. The CNET rewrites we did see repeat this claim as “reportedly.”

HipHopGamer, a social account with a mixed track record, posted that GTA 6 will run at 60fps on PS5 Pro and that fans should “get a PS5 Pro now.” TweakTown says the post may have fed the buying rush. Rockstar has not detailed PS5 Pro enhancements or frame rates. GHacks, VideoCardz and GTABoom report Rockstar confirmed enhancements exist but gave no specifics, and that 60fps is doubted.

An aggregator citing WGB and Sensor Tower put pre-orders at about 4.38 million, worth roughly $429 million, with about 77 percent on PS5. We did not find the primary report, and Take-Two has not published pre-order figures.

Whether CNET’s piece contains any original reporting beyond the Playfront memo. Whether the memo exists at all, and whether Sony will address PS5 Pro supply publicly. How much of the shortage is GTA 6 demand versus the memory squeeze, since no sales data has surfaced. What the PS5 Pro enhancements actually are. Whether a PC version is coming. And whether the standard PS5 stays on shelves; one unverified Italian source said it did as of Sept 25.

What it means

The confirmed facts are narrow but useful. GTA 6 launches November 19 on both standard PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, per Take-Two’s SEC filing. Nothing from Rockstar says the PS5 Pro is required or offers 60fps. Players paying $1,300 or more on resale are acting on a social post, not a spec sheet. The practical move is to watch PlayStation Direct for list-price restocks and keep the standard consoles in view as a fallback, while treating the early 2027 shortage timeline as unverified until Sony says otherwise.
