GTA 6 wildlife and animals spotted in Leonida
Rockstar has put wildlife in its official GTA 6 footage, and the alligator in the first trailer is the clearest example. Hunting, fishing, pets and a species count have not been announced. This briefing separates what Rockstar has actually shown from what the community has inferred, and covers what Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V suggest about the creatures we should expect in Leonida.
Last checked: after the Launch Trailer, the latest official screenshot drops and Rockstar’s confirmation of the 19 November 2026 release date. We update this page as launch details land.
What we know
The confirmed list is short. That is not because Leonida is empty. Rockstar has released several trailers and multiple batches of screenshots, and none of that material was built to show off animals. The animals we have seen are background details, punchlines and set dressing in scenes about Jason, Lucia and the people around them.
Here are the official sources we rely on:
- Trailer 1 (released 4 December 2023, a day earlier than planned after it leaked online)
- Trailer 2 (6 May 2025), published alongside a large set of official screenshots and the overhauled Rockstar website covering characters and regions
- Rockstar Newswire posts on release timing, including the two delays: first to 26 May 2026, then to 19 November 2026
Take-Two’s earnings calls have covered dates and business performance. They have said nothing about animals.
The confirmed animal: the alligator
The gator is the one sighting nobody disputes. In Trailer 1, an alligator walks into a convenience store. The clip sits in the trailer’s montage of phone-shot viral footage, which is Rockstar parodying the “Florida Man” news genre that the real state is known for. Alligators also fit the wetlands of the Grassrivers, the Everglades-style region on Rockstar’s official site.
The sighting matters for two reasons. It shows animals moving through urban spaces, so wildlife is not limited to the countryside. It also shows Rockstar planning to use animals as part of Leonida’s personality and humour, not only as decoration.
Animals fans have flagged in official footage
Beyond the gator, frame-by-frame breakdowns by fans and gaming outlets have picked out more creatures in Rockstar’s trailers and screenshots. We list them in a separate tier on purpose. They come from official material, but many are glimpses: a few frames, a blur at the edge of a shot, or a shape that could be one of several species. We are not counting a species as confirmed until a clear shot or a Rockstar caption settles it.
| Animal | Where fans report it | Our call |
|---|---|---|
| Alligator | Trailer 1 convenience store clip; fits Grassrivers wetlands | CONFIRMED |
| Flamingos | Wetland and coastal shots | Likely; community identification of official footage |
| Pelicans, gulls and other seabirds | Coastal, marina and Leonida Keys scenes | Likely; birds are visible, exact species debated |
| Dogs | Street and residential scenes | Likely; Rockstar has rendered dogs since GTA V |
| Fish and marine life | Water and boating scenes | Unclear; read from brief or distant shots |
What we cannot do is give you a verified total. Any page claiming a precise number of species seen in the trailers is counting ambiguous frames as confirmations, or folding in guesswork.
Agent's note
Most trailer animal sightings come from the screenshots, not the videos. The stills are higher resolution and do not suffer from motion blur. If you want to settle a debate about a bird or a shape in the water, check the official screenshot before rewatching the trailer.
Where Leonida’s wildlife should live

Rockstar’s official website splits Leonida into named regions. Read with real Florida geography, they suggest which animals belong where. This is inference, not confirmation, but it is grounded inference. Our “gta 6 leonida” breakdown covers the state itself, and our “gta 6 map” guide tracks every confirmed region and landmark.
Grassrivers
This is Leonida’s take on the Everglades: sawgrass, airboats and slow brown water. It is the most obvious home for alligators, and in the real Everglades it would also hold wading birds such as herons, egrets and roseate spoonbills. Invasive Burmese pythons are a well-known Everglades problem. That makes them an easy target for the kind of satire Rockstar enjoys, but they have not been shown.
Leonida Keys
The Keys analogue is all boats, reefs and bars at the end of long causeways. Real-world counterparts here include pelicans, ospreys, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and the small Key deer found only in the lower Florida Keys. The Keys are also home to the American crocodile, which is separate from the alligator. A Rockstar team this focused on Florida detail could tell the two apart, though we have no evidence it has.
Vice City
Cities are where the gator clip happened, and where the “Florida Man” energy concentrates. Urban wildlife in real Miami includes feral chickens, green iguanas falling out of trees in cold snaps, parrots and pigeons. GTA IV turned pigeons into a collectible (more on that below), so city birds are a natural fit.
Mount Kalaga National Park
Rockstar’s national park region is Leonida’s big outdoors. Real northern and central Florida forest holds black bears, white-tailed deer, wild hogs, armadillos, wild turkeys and the endangered Florida panther. If Rockstar adds hunting, this is where it would most likely live, in the same way GTA V tied its hunting to the hills around Blaine County.
Ambrosia and Port Gellhorn
Ambrosia is built around agriculture and industry, and Port Gellhorn is a run-down Gulf Coast town. Farmland suggests livestock such as cattle, chickens and horses. A port town suggests gulls, pelicans and stray dogs. Neither has an animal sighting we would call confirmed.
The rhesus macaque question
A real Florida oddity worth flagging: there is a wild population of rhesus macaques, monkeys native to Asia, living around Silver Springs State Park in central Florida. They descend from monkeys released decades ago, and they come up regularly in Florida news. Several fan lists include macaques as a likely GTA 6 species for exactly that reason. It is the sort of strange-but-true detail Rockstar tends to fold in. As of our last check, Rockstar has not shown a monkey, so this one stays in the speculation pile.
What is rumored

Rumors about GTA 6 wildlife are thin. No proven reporter has made a specific claim about the animals, so most of what circulates is community speculation. Here is each claim, its source and our credibility call.
“Over 170 animal species across the map”
Source: community posts, including a widely shared Reddit thread.
Credibility: low. We found no official statement, earnings call comment or proven insider behind this figure. The number sits close to how many species fans count in Red Dead Redemption 2’s in-game Compendium, which suggests it is an extrapolation from that game rather than a leak about this one. Treat it as a wish, not intel.
Hunting returns, RDR2-style
Source: community speculation, based on GTA V having hunting and Red Dead Redemption 2 being built around it.
Credibility: plausible but unsourced. It is a reasonable expectation given a national park region, but no credible leaker or official source has confirmed hunting in GTA 6. Status: Not announced.
Fishing as an activity
Source: community speculation, driven by how much of Leonida’s identity is coastal and marine.
Credibility: plausible but unsourced. Boats feature heavily in the trailers, and fishing was a major pastime in Red Dead Redemption 2. Nobody with a track record has reported fishing for GTA 6. Status: Not announced.
Ownable pets
Source: fan wish lists.
Credibility: low. GTA V gave Franklin a dog, Chop, but story-tied companions are not the same as a pet system. Nothing credible points to pet ownership. Status: Not announced.
A note on the 2022 leak
Rockstar confirmed in September 2022 that an intruder had accessed its network and taken early development material for the game. Reputable outlets reported that the leaked clips were rough work-in-progress footage of the game’s systems and characters. We do not host, describe how to find, or treat that material as evidence of final features. Anything seen in years-old development footage could have changed completely by launch.
Heads up
“Leaked GTA 6 animal lists” and early-access offers that ask for downloads, logins or payments are scams or malware. Real details will come from Rockstar, Take-Two and the official platform stores.
How Rockstar’s animals evolved across the series

Expecting rich wildlife in GTA 6 does not depend on rumors. It depends on Rockstar’s track record, which shows a clear line from almost no animals to full simulated ecosystems in about a decade.
| Game | Year | Animals and how they mattered |
|---|---|---|
| GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas | 2001 to 2004 | Non-interactive set dressing, from static seagull props in GTA III to birds and sea life such as fish, dolphins, jellyfish and sea turtles in later entries. No real animal ecosystem. |
| GTA IV | 2008 | 200 “flying rats” (pigeons) hidden across Liberty City as collectibles to shoot |
| Red Dead Redemption | 2010 | Huntable wildlife across a frontier map, including bears and cougars that could kill the player |
| GTA V | 2013 | First GTA with a broad animal roster: dogs, cats, deer, boar, coyotes, mountain lions, cows, birds, sharks, dolphins and whales |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 2018 | Rockstar’s deepest wildlife system, with a Compendium of close to 200 species, pelt quality, legendary animals and animal-specific behaviour |
GTA V set the baseline
GTA V is the closest template. It added animals that reacted to the player, hunted each other and ambushed you in the wild. Mountain lions in the Blaine County hills were a famous hazard. Sharks made swimming far from shore a gamble. Trevor’s hunting activity with Cletus Ewing turned deer, boar and elk into targets. After 100% completion, Franklin’s final Strangers and Freaks mission, “The Last One”, sends him after a Bigfoot-like creature.
The enhanced versions on PS4, Xbox One and PC added peyote plants, which let you play as animals, and a photography challenge built around wildlife. Our “gta 6 vs gta 5” comparison covers how the two games stack up more broadly.
RDR2 is the real benchmark
Red Dead Redemption 2 matters more for GTA 6 wildlife than GTA V does. It is the most recent open world Rockstar has shipped, and it treated animals as a full system. Species had distinct behaviour, habitats and daily patterns. You could study them through binoculars to fill in the Compendium. Pelts came in different quality grades, and legendary animals carried unique rewards. Predators hunted prey without the player’s involvement, and scavengers gathered at carcasses.
The same studio network built both games, and Rockstar’s technology carries forward between projects. That is why the community expects more from GTA 6 animals than GTA V offered. It is still an expectation. Rockstar has not described GTA 6’s animal systems in any detail.
Tracking animals in the GTA 6 footage yourself
Most animal identifications come from fans pausing trailers and comparing frames. The method is simple, and it is the same discipline behind the “gta 6 mapping” project, which rebuilds the map from trailer landmarks.
Quick steps: spot animals in official GTA 6 footage
- Play the trailer on Rockstar’s official channel at the highest available resolution.
- Pause, then step frame by frame with the comma and period keys on YouTube desktop.
- Note the scene’s region and lighting, then match it to an official screenshot of the same area.
- Compare the animal’s silhouette and colouring against real Florida species before logging it.
Treat any sighting with discipline. A pink smudge on a lake could be flamingos or spoonbills. A dark shape in the water could be a gator, a log or a manatee. We hold back from confirming until the identification survives a clean frame.
Interacting with animals: observing, petting, hunting
This is the section most readers want, and the honest answer is that Rockstar has not explained how players will interact with GTA 6 animals. Here is how we read each possibility.
Observing. Confirmed in a limited sense: animals exist in the world and behave on screen, as the gator clip shows. Whether there is a Compendium-style tracking system like RDR2’s is Not announced.
Photographing. Phones and social media are central to GTA 6’s presentation, and the trailers are full of filmed viral moments. A wildlife photography feature would be a natural fit given GTA V’s photo challenge, but it is Not announced.
Petting and companions. Red Dead Redemption 2 let you pet dogs and bond with horses. GTA V had Chop. GTA 6 has shown nothing comparable. Not announced.
Hunting. Not announced. Mount Kalaga National Park is the most likely candidate area if the feature exists.
Fishing. Not announced, despite the game’s heavy coastal focus.
Danger. Very likely in some form. Rockstar has made wildlife a threat in every recent open-world game, and Florida’s alligators practically demand it. We still list it as an expectation rather than a confirmed mechanic.
What it means
Three things stand out from the evidence so far.
First, Rockstar is using animals to sell Leonida’s identity. The gator in the convenience store is a Florida joke before it is a gameplay feature. That tells us wildlife is part of the setting’s satire, which is how GTA has always handled its locations, and the animal life should feel specific to Florida rather than generic.
Second, the technical bar is RDR2, not GTA V. Whatever Rockstar ships will be compared with the most detailed wildlife system it has built. It would be surprising for GTA 6 to fall back to GTA V’s level, but GTA is a crime game first, and Rockstar may choose a lighter touch than a frontier survival game needed.
Third, the smart expectation is “rich world, unclear activities.” We are confident Leonida will be crowded with creatures. We are not confident about hunting, fishing or pets until Rockstar says so, and nobody else should be either.
What we’re waiting to hear about
The open questions we are tracking, in rough order of how likely Rockstar is to address them before launch:
- Gameplay activities. Whether hunting, fishing or wildlife photography exist, likely revealed in a future trailer or gameplay showcase.
- Store listings. Updated PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store pages often list headline features. These are where hunting or fishing would show up in official text.
- Species scope. Rockstar sometimes quotes numbers in marketing. Until it does, we list no count.
- GTA Online. How animals carry into the next online mode is entirely Not announced.
- PC version. Not announced. Rockstar historically releases on PC after consoles, but nothing official has been said for GTA 6.
Pricing is also unannounced; our “gta 6 price” tracker covers every edition rumor and official update. Once copies are in critics’ hands, the “gta 6 reviews” embargo will be the first independent look at how deep the wildlife systems go, and the “gta 6 launch patch” may fix early animal AI bugs.
FAQ
Are there animals in GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar’s official trailer footage includes wildlife, most clearly an alligator walking into a convenience store in Trailer 1. Fans have also flagged birds, dogs and other creatures in the trailers and official screenshots. Rockstar has not released a full species list.
How many animals are in GTA 6?
There is no official number. Figures like “over 170 species” come from community posts with no credible source behind them, and they look borrowed from Red Dead Redemption 2’s species count. We will add a figure only if Rockstar or Take-Two confirms one.
Can you hunt in GTA 6?
Not announced. GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 both had hunting, and Leonida has a national park region where it would fit, but Rockstar has not confirmed the activity for GTA 6.
Can you have a pet in GTA 6?
Not announced. GTA V gave Franklin a dog named Chop as part of the story, but there is no evidence of a pet ownership system in GTA 6.
Will GTA 6 have alligators?
Yes, confirmed. An alligator appears in Trailer 1, and the Grassrivers region is modelled on the Everglades, where alligators live in huge numbers in the real world.
Are there monkeys in GTA 6?
Not confirmed. Fans expect them because a real colony of rhesus macaques lives wild near Silver Springs in central Florida, but Rockstar has not shown a monkey in any official GTA 6 material.
When can we see more GTA 6 wildlife?
GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Any further trailers, gameplay showcases or updated store listings before then are the most likely places for new animal details, and we will add them here as they land.
