GTA 6 vs GTA 5: the biggest differences confirmed so far

GTA 6 moves the series from Los Santos to Vice City and the state of Leonida, replaces GTA 5’s three-man cast with Jason and Lucia, and launches only on current-gen consoles on 19 November 2026. This briefing covers only what Rockstar and Take-Two have officially shown or stated, and labels everything else as rumor. The page is updated as launch details land.

GTA 5 had one of the longest commercial lives of any game ever made. It came out on PS3 and Xbox 360, crossed two more console generations and picked up a PC Enhanced edition more than a decade after release. Take-Two’s earnings reports put its lifetime sales above 215 million copies. That longevity is why the gap to GTA 6 feels so wide.

Everything in this section comes from Rockstar’s trailers, its official website, its Newswire posts or Take-Two’s investor communications. If it isn’t there, it isn’t here.

1. The setting jumps from San Andreas to Leonida

GTA 5 put you in Los Santos, a sun-bleached satire of Los Angeles, plus the deserts, mountains and backwater towns of Blaine County. Its targets were Hollywood, Silicon Valley, the self-help industry and post-2008 finance.

GTA 6 goes back to Vice City, the series’ take on Miami, last visited in GTA Vice City (2002) and GTA Vice City Stories (2006). This time the city sits inside a full state called Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida. Trailer 1 opened on a prison interview with Lucia at the Leonida Department of Corrections. Then it cut to a montage of beaches, swamps, nightclubs, highway chases and viral clips of people behaving very badly.

The tone shift is real. GTA 5 skewered West Coast vanity. Trailer footage for GTA 6 points at a different target: the internet-fuelled, everything-is-content culture that Florida has become shorthand for. You see livestreamed crimes, vertical-video clips and a parody social feed running through Trailer 1.

2. Two protagonists instead of three

GTA 5’s big structural idea was its three-protagonist system. You switched between Michael, the retired bank robber in witness protection; Franklin, the young repo man from South Los Santos; and Trevor, the volatile meth dealer from Sandy Shores. Each had a special ability, and missions often had you swapping between them mid-heist.

GTA 6 cuts the cast to two: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Rockstar’s official description frames them as a couple who know the deck is stacked against them. When an easy score goes wrong, they get pulled into a criminal conspiracy that stretches across Leonida, and they have to rely on each other to survive.

Rockstar’s profiles fill in the backstory:

Character What Rockstar has confirmed
Jason Duval Grew up around grifters and crooks, served in the army, and now works for local drug runners in the Leonida Keys
Lucia Caminos Taught to fight by her father; her fight for her family landed her in Leonida Penitentiary, and she got out through luck
Cal Hampton Jason’s friend, a homebody with a conspiratorial streak
Boobie Ike A Vice City figure with interests in real estate, a strip club and a music label
Dre’Quan Priest A former street dealer turned music manager
Real Dimez Rap duo Bae-Luxe and Roxy
Raul Bautista A veteran, confident bank robber
Brian Heder An old-school drug runner Jason works for

What Rockstar hasn’t explained is how switching works. GTA 5’s free-roam swap, with its zoom-out to the map and back down, is the obvious template. However, nothing official confirms you can switch freely between Jason and Lucia outside missions, or that either has a special ability. Treat both as Not announced. Our “gta 6 jason and lucia” file covers every frame of both leads.

3. The first female lead of the modern era

Lucia is the first female protagonist of a mainline 3D Grand Theft Auto. The top-down originals let you pick from a roster of characters, but every lead since GTA 3 in 2001 has been male: Claude, Tommy Vercetti, CJ, Niko Bellic, and GTA 5’s trio.

This was reported before Rockstar confirmed it. In July 2022, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, a reporter with a strong track record on Rockstar, said the next GTA would feature a Latina female lead in a Bonnie and Clyde-style partnership. Trailer 1 proved him right roughly 17 months later.

4. The map covers a whole state, with six named regions

GTA 5’s map was one county-and-city pairing. Rockstar never published an official area figure for it, and the numbers you see online are fan measurements.

For GTA 6, Rockstar’s website names six areas of Leonida:

Region What Rockstar has shown Rough real-world parallel
Vice City Neon skyline, beaches, nightlife, the flagship city Miami
Leonida Keys Island chain, boats, laid-back crime Florida Keys
Grassrivers Swampland, airboats, alligators Everglades
Port Gellhorn A faded port and resort town Florida Panhandle
Ambrosia Industrial interior built around a sugar refinery Inland Florida farm country
Mount Kalaga National Park Forests, trails and backcountry wilderness Northern Florida

The confirmed difference is variety and structure. GTA 5 had one city and a countryside. GTA 6 has one major city, several distinct towns and wilderness biomes, and a lot more water. Expect boats and swamp travel to matter more than they ever did in San Andreas.

Rockstar has not given an official size, so any number claiming GTA 6’s map is “X times bigger” than GTA 5’s isn’t official. Community mapping projects working from trailer frames and screenshots generally conclude it is larger. That’s useful fan work, but it’s an estimate built on footage, not a Rockstar figure. Our “gta 6 map” briefing tracks every confirmed landmark.

5. Built for current-gen hardware only

GTA 5 was designed around the PS3 and Xbox 360, machines with 512 MB of memory and spinning hard drives. Every later version was a port of that 2013 foundation, however much it was upgraded.

GTA 6 is the first mainline GTA built from the ground up for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. All three consoles use fast solid-state storage. That’s a hardware fact. What Rockstar has not done is publish load times, frame rates or resolution targets for either console.

Rockstar did say that Trailer 2 was captured entirely on PlayStation 5, split between gameplay and cutscenes. That matters for the comparison. The crowds, lighting and density in Trailer 2 aren’t PC target renders. They are what Rockstar says a base PS5 is running.

PS5 Pro support hasn’t been detailed by Rockstar or Sony at our last check. Our “gta 6 ps5 pro” page will update the moment it is.

6. A denser, busier world on screen

You can’t confirm a feature list from a trailer. You can confirm what Rockstar chose to show. GTA 6’s trailers repeatedly show things GTA 5 never managed at this scale:

  • Crowds: packed beaches, nightclubs and street parties with hundreds of people on screen in the same shot.
  • Wildlife: alligators, flamingos and other animals woven into scenes, including the now-infamous gator wandering into a convenience store.
  • Character detail: visible sweat, wet skin and hair, and fabric movement in close-up gameplay shots.
  • Lighting and water: reflections on wet roads, ocean surfaces and neon at night that read very differently from GTA 5’s look.

How reactive those NPCs are, whether crowds respond intelligently to crime, and how much of it is scripted versus systemic are open questions. Rockstar hasn’t described the AI in writing. When people say GTA 6’s world feels more alive, they are describing trailers, not hands-on time.

7. Social media is part of the world’s DNA

GTA 5 had in-game internet sites and the Lifeinvader social network, a Facebook parody you could browse on Michael’s computer or your phone. It was flavour text.

GTA 6’s first trailer was built around vertical clips, live-streaming and a parody social feed. Rockstar used the format to show the world, and it’s a strong signal that viral content is part of how Leonida presents itself. What hasn’t been confirmed is whether the feed is a playable system. You can’t yet say whether your crimes go viral or whether streaming affects wanted levels and reputation. Footage: CONFIRMED. Mechanics: Not announced.

8. A modern-day story told as a partnership

GTA 5’s story was three men with conflicting goals colliding over heists, families and an FIB conspiracy. It sprawled, it was deliberately abrasive, and its three endings forced you to pick between the leads.

GTA 6’s official synopsis points at something tighter: two people who need each other, set against a statewide conspiracy. Trailer 2 leaned hard on the relationship between Jason and Lucia, with scenes of them planning together, arguing, and Lucia taking the lead in robberies. Rockstar hasn’t confirmed story length, mission count or multiple endings.

This is where most GTA 6 vs GTA 5 articles start guessing. Here’s the line between hard information and speculation.

Why “600 GB” doesn’t add up

A claim that GTA 6 will take up 600 GB has done the rounds. There’s no Rockstar, Take-Two or store-listing source for it, and the hardware argues against it.

A base PS5 has 667 GB of usable storage out of its 825 GB drive. The Xbox Series S, a confirmed GTA 6 platform, has roughly 364 GB usable. A 600 GB game could not install on a console Rockstar has officially named. The real figure will appear on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings when Rockstar publishes them.

Agent's note

Whatever the final install size, plan on extra room for a day-one update. Rockstar hasn’t detailed one yet, but you should budget free space on top of the base install, especially on a Series S.

Our “gta 6 launch patch” file tracks any official word on day-one updates.

Pricing: GTA 5 then, GTA 6 now

GTA 5 launched at $59.99 in the US in 2013, the standard price for a premium console game then. It went on to earn more than $800 million in its first 24 hours and hit $1 billion in three days, both Guinness World Records at the time.

GTA 6’s price is Not announced. Standard premium console releases now commonly sit at $69.99 in the US, and some publishers have tested higher prices. That context explains the price chatter, but it doesn’t set a figure for GTA 6. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly said the company aims to deliver more value than it charges. That is a philosophy, not a price.

What is rumored

Each of these comes with its source grade and our credibility call. None of them is confirmed.

Price above $100 or “$200 GTA 6”
Source grade: community speculation and social media posts, no credible insider attached.
Our call: Low credibility for $200. Some industry analysts have publicly floated the idea of a higher-than-usual price because of GTA 6’s expected scale. However, analyst opinion isn’t a leak, and no proven reporter has reported a GTA 6 price. Wait for the store listing.

Map is “X times bigger” than GTA 5
Source grade: community mapping projects working from official trailers and screenshots.
Our call: Plausible direction, unverifiable number. The fan work is careful, but it extrapolates scale from footage. Rockstar hasn’t given a figure.

The map expands after launch
Source grade: proven reporter. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported in 2022 that Rockstar planned to start smaller and add cities and missions over time.
Our call: Medium. Schreier’s other claims from the same report, the Latina lead and the Vice City setting, proved correct. Plans can change across years of development, and Rockstar hasn’t confirmed post-launch map expansion.

A PC version a year or more after console launch
Source grade: inference from Rockstar’s history, not a leak. GTA 5 hit PC about 19 months after its console debut. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on consoles in October 2018 and reached PC in November 2019.
Our call: History favours a later PC release, but this is pattern-reading. PC is officially Not announced.

A new GTA Online built on GTA 6
Source grade: widespread expectation, no official detail.
Our call: Likely in some form, given GTA Online’s commercial weight. Its structure, timing and whether it launches with the story mode are all Not announced.

What the 2022 leak showed
Source grade: confirmed theft, footage described by reputable outlets.
Rockstar confirmed in September 2022 that early development footage was stolen in a network intrusion. Outlets including Bloomberg and The Verge reported that the clips showed two playable characters and a Vice City setting, which the official trailers later matched. That footage was years-old work in progress. We don’t host or point to it, and it shouldn’t be used to judge final visuals or mechanics.

Heads up

Fake “GTA 6 early access”, “beta” and “PC download” offers are a known malware and scam vector. Rockstar has announced no beta or early-access program, and GTA 6 is console-only at launch.

What it means

Pros and cons: GTA 5

Pros
– Available right now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
– Regularly discounted, so it’s one of the cheapest ways into the series.
– GTA Online still gets content updates and has a huge player base.
– PC Enhanced edition brings ray tracing and other upgrades to a mature mod and creator scene.

Cons
– A 2013 design underneath. Mission structure, AI and pacing show their age.
– Story mode never got the single-player DLC that was once expected.
– Los Santos has been explored to death after more than a decade.

Pros and cons: GTA 6

Pros (based on confirmed information)
– A new setting, a full state with six named regions and far more environmental variety.
– Built for current-gen consoles from the start rather than ported up.
– A new cast led by the series’ first modern female protagonist.
– Trailer 2 footage, which Rockstar says was captured on PS5, shows a big jump in density and detail.

Cons (based on confirmed information)
– Not out until 19 November 2026, after two delays.
– No PC version announced, and no PS4 or Xbox One version.
– Price, install size and online plans are all unknown.
– No hands-on reporting yet. Everything you’ve seen is curated trailer footage.

Which should you choose?

If you’re on PC, or you haven’t touched Los Santos yet, play GTA 5 now. It’s cheap, it’s complete, and it shows you what Rockstar’s open-world formula looked like before GTA 6 rewrites it.

If you’ve finished GTA 5 and only care about what’s next, the decision is about hardware. You need a PS5, PS5 Pro or Xbox Series X|S for GTA 6 on day one. The Series S is supported, but its smaller drive means storage could get tight once the install size lands.

Don’t pre-buy anything on the strength of a rumored price or file size. Wait for the official store listing, then wait for the “gta 6 reviews” embargo to lift if you want to know whether the world is as reactive as the trailers suggest.

Quick steps: get ready for GTA 6 launch

  1. Confirm you own a PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S.
  2. Check free storage now, and plan to clear more once Rockstar publishes the install size.
  3. Watch Rockstar Newswire and the official store listings for price and pre-order news.
  4. Ignore any “beta”, “early access” or PC download offers.
  5. Finish GTA 5’s story while you wait if you never did.

For gear specifics as they’re confirmed, our “gta 6 cars” and “gta 6 weapons” files log everything spotted in official footage.

FAQ

What is the difference between GTA 5 and GTA 6?

GTA 5 is set in Los Santos and Blaine County, released in 2013 and follows three protagonists: Michael, Franklin and Trevor. GTA 6 is set in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and follows two leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. GTA 6 also adds a much more varied map with six named regions and was built for current-gen consoles only.

Will GTA 6 be better than GTA V?

Nobody can say that honestly before release. The official trailers show a denser, more detailed world, and the game is built for hardware far beyond what GTA 5 was designed around. However, quality comes down to missions, systems and story, and none of that has been tested by independent reviewers yet. The review embargo is the first real verdict.

Will GTA 6 cost $200?

There is no official price for GTA 6, and no credible insider or proven reporter has reported $200. That figure comes from social media speculation. Rockstar and Take-Two haven’t announced pricing or editions. The real price will appear on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store when Rockstar opens listings.

Is GTA 6 actually 600 GB?

No official install size exists, and 600 GB doesn’t fit the hardware. The Xbox Series S, a confirmed GTA 6 platform, has roughly 364 GB of usable storage, and a base PS5 has 667 GB. A 600 GB game couldn’t install on the Series S at all. Expect a large download, but wait for the store listing for the real number.

Is GTA 6 coming to PC or PS4?

There is no PS4 or Xbox One version. A PC version is Not announced. Rockstar released GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC after their console launches, but that’s history, not a commitment.

Can you switch between Jason and Lucia like in GTA 5?

Rockstar hasn’t explained how character control works. The trailers show both leads in gameplay, but free-roam switching in the style of GTA 5 is Not announced.

Marcus Reed runs the GTA 6 desk at RockstarSpy. His beat is everything attached to the next game: release windows, launch details, official trailers, platform plans and the steady drip of leaks that fills the gap between Rockstar announcements. He treats every claim as a question of sourcing first. A Take-Two earnings call or a Rockstar Newswire post gets reported as fact. A datamine or a tipster with a mixed record gets labeled as such. When a story shifts, he updates the piece and says what changed rather than quietly rewriting it. Readers should always be able to tell what is confirmed and what is still talk.
