Grove Street and the Grove Street Families explained

Grove Street is the cul-de-sac in Ganton, East Los Santos, where Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas opens and where Carl “CJ” Johnson, his brother Sweet, Ryder and Big Smoke all live. It is the home turf of the Grove Street Families, the green-flagged gang you spend the game rebuilding, and it returns nine years later in GTA V under Ballas control. This briefing covers the block, the gang, the missions tied to it and the cheats that affect it.

Where Grove Street is on the map

Open your map in San Andreas and look at the eastern half of Los Santos. Ganton sits south of Jefferson and east of Idlewood, and Grove Street is the dead-end road curling off its southern edge, marked on the Ganton gym side by the painted “Grove Street” wall and the overpass that frames the famous opening shot. Only one road leads in, which is why the Ballas drive-by in the first act feels so claustrophobic: there is nowhere to run.

The cul-de-sac itself is a ring of single-storey houses with a patch of grass in the middle. You will spend more time here than anywhere else in the game, because the Johnson House is your first save point, wardrobe and garage.

Spot What it does Notes
Johnson House Save point, wardrobe, garage, cash pickup from owned turf Spawns a Tec-9, sawn-off shotgun, Molotovs and an AK-47 in the kitchen once you spray all 100 Los Santos tags
Sweet’s house Mission marker for Sweet’s early and late story missions Next door to CJ
Ryder’s house Mission marker for Ryder’s three missions Next to the Johnson House, with a small side yard
Big Smoke’s house Mission marker for Smoke’s first missions Smoke later moves to a larger house in Idlewood
Ganton Gym First gym available, boxing style At the entrance to the street

Denise Robinson, the first girlfriend you can date, lives a few doors away in Ganton once you save her in “Burning Desire”. The Binco clothing store and a Cluckin’ Bell are a short drive west in Idlewood, and the Los Santos tags that reward the kitchen weapons start with the six you spray in “Tagging Up Turf” right around the block.

The Grove Street Families, usually shortened to GSF or simply “the Families”, are an African-American street gang loosely modelled on the Crips. Rockstar flipped the colour to green to avoid mapping a real set onto the fiction, but the structure is familiar: a parent gang broken into neighbourhood sets, each with its own OGs, each fighting the same purple-clad enemy.

By 1992, when the game is set, the gang has three sets. Grove Street under Sweet holds Ganton. The Seville Boulevard Families hold a strip of Playa del Seville, and the Temple Drive Families hold Temple. The sets have fallen out over drug money, which is the reason the Families are losing to the Ballas when CJ steps off the plane. Sweet’s refusal to deal crack is the moral centre of the story and the thing that splits him from Big Smoke.

Member Role in the set Status by the end
Sean “Sweet” Johnson Leader of the Grove Street set, CJ’s older brother Alive, back running the block
Carl “CJ” Johnson Returning member, player character Alive
Lance “Ryder” Wilson Lieutenant, lives next to CJ Killed by CJ in “Pier 69” after defecting
Melvin “Big Smoke” Harris Senior member turned drug kingpin Killed by CJ in “End of the Line”
Barry “Big Bear” Thorne Former heavy, reduced to B Dup’s addict errand boy Freed, returns to the gang
Mark “B Dup” Wayne Former member turned dealer Beaten and driven off in “Beat Down on B Dup”
Emmet Seville Boulevard OG, keeps a gun cache in Willowfield Supplies your first pistol in “Nines and AKs”

Enemies are the Ballas (purple, modelled on the Bloods) and the Los Santos Vagos (yellow). The Varrios Los Aztecas become allies through Cesar Vialpando, which is why Aztecas turf in El Corona never flips against you.

The game opens with CJ’s line, “Grove Street. Home. At least it was before I fucked everything up,” delivered as he walks into a street in 1992 that looks nothing like the one he left five years earlier. The early missions from Sweet, Ryder and Big Smoke are all launched from the cul-de-sac, and each is really a tour of how far the set has fallen.

The collapse comes in “The Green Sabre”. Sweet is ambushed at the Mulholland Intersection, CJ learns that Smoke and Ryder have gone over to the Ballas and Officer Tenpenny, and the whole Grove Street map turns purple. Every scrap of territory you captured is wiped, Sweet goes to prison and CJ is dumped in Angel Pine. Rockstar does not let you touch gang wars again for roughly two-thirds of the game.

The return starts with “Home Coming”. Sweet walks out of jail, refuses to touch the Mulholland mansion CJ has bought and demands to see Grove Street. You find it full of dealers and addicts, and the next few missions are a cleanup: “Beat Down on B Dup” sends you to Glen Park to drag Big Bear out of B Dup’s apartment, and “Grove 4 Life” has you and Sweet flip two Idlewood territories by force. “End of the Line” closes the loop with Smoke dead, Tenpenny dead and the Families back in charge.

Taking and holding turf from Grove Street

Gang wars unlock after Sweet’s mission “Doberman”, when the territory overlay appears on your map. Green zones are yours, purple is Ballas and yellow is Vagos. Owned territory pays cash that collects as a spinning pickup outside the Johnson House, capping at $10,000, so Grove Street doubles as your bank in the first act.

Quick steps: win a gang war from Grove Street

  1. Stock up at Emmet’s or Ammu-Nation, then recruit homies on the block by targeting them and pressing the recruit input.
  2. Drive to an enemy zone that borders your turf and kill three rival members on foot to provoke a war.
  3. Survive three waves, using cover and your recruits, and stay inside the zone until it turns green.
  4. Return to the Johnson House to save, which also cashes in the territory pickup.

Two numbers matter. Before “End of the Line” unlocks, Sweet requires you to hold at least 35 percent of Los Santos gang turf, and your Respect stat sets how many recruits you can carry, up to seven at full Respect. Respect rises from missions, tags, kills on rival gang members and police, and taking over territory, and drops when a homie dies or you lose territory to enemy gangs.

Agent's note

Rival gangs can attack your turf while you are away, but they only do it if you are in Los Santos. Park yourself in San Fierro or Las Venturas when you want to grind something else, and Grove Street will still be green when you drive back.

Cheats that change Grove Street

These are the original cheats that bear directly on the block. PC codes are typed anywhere during play. Controller sequences are for the original PS2 and Xbox releases and carry over to the Definitive Edition on PlayStation and Xbox; the Definitive Edition on PC accepts the same text strings.

“Gangs control the streets” removes most civilians and police from Los Santos and fills the roads with gang cars, which turns the Grove Street approach into a shooting gallery. “Only gang members” does the same for pedestrians everywhere, including the other cities.

Heads up

Cheats in the original release count on the stats screen and can corrupt saves if left active through story missions. In the Definitive Edition, entering any cheat disables trophies and achievements until you reload a clean save.

Grove Street in GTA V and GTA Online

Grove Street survives the jump to the HD universe, but the ownership does not. In GTA V’s Los Santos the cul-de-sac sits in Davis, the game’s Compton stand-in, and in 2013 it is Ballas turf. The Families now operate from Forum Drive and Chamberlain Hills, with Franklin Clinton and Lamar Davis part of the Chamberlain Gangster Families set.

The mission “Hood Safari” is the direct callback. Lamar drags Franklin to Grove Street to buy from the Ballas, Trevor tags along uninvited, the deal collapses into a shootout and the three escape by jet ski. The layout of the cul-de-sac deliberately echoes Ganton, and Rockstar even reuses the green-painted house on the corner so you recognise the block in one frame.

GTA Online adds nothing canonical to the street, but Lamar’s Short Trips in The Contract update and the Families’ presence in Chamberlain Hills keep the gang alive as a faction. Ballas still own the Davis cul-de-sac in every Online session.

Where the name and the block come from

Ganton is a Compton stand-in, and the Grove Street cul-de-sac is a composite of the real dead-end residential streets south of downtown Los Angeles rather than a single address. The name itself has a plausible British source: Rockstar North works out of Edinburgh, and the city has a real Grove Street near Haymarket. Rockstar has never confirmed the link, so treat that as a RUMOR with good circumstantial support rather than a design fact.

The name also caused Rockstar a modern headache. Grove Street Games, the Florida studio formerly known as War Drum Studios, built the 2013 Android and iOS ports of San Andreas and then developed GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, released 11 November 2021. The launch bugs made the studio’s name a punchline for a while, which is a strange fate for a company named after the most beloved street in the series.

If you searched grove street or grove st looking for the PATH station in Jersey City or the West Village street off Christopher Street in New York, this is not that. The GTA version has better jerseys and considerably worse parking.

FAQ

What city is Grove Street in?

Los Santos, Rockstar’s version of Los Angeles. In San Andreas it is in the Ganton district on the east side; in GTA V the same cul-de-sac is in Davis.

Who runs the Grove Street Families?

Sweet Johnson leads the Grove Street set throughout San Andreas. The other two sets, Seville Boulevard and Temple Drive, split from Grove Street over drug policy and are hostile to it for most of the game, only reuniting with Sweet’s set late in the story.

Are the Grove Street Families the Crips?

They are modelled on the Crips, with the colour swapped to green and the Ballas standing in for the Bloods. Rockstar never names the real gangs.

Can you own Grove Street in GTA V?

No. It is permanently Ballas territory and there is no turf system in GTA V or GTA Online. The Families’ home in 2013 is Forum Drive and Chamberlain Hills.

Does Grove Street appear in GTA 6?

Not announced. GTA 6 is set in Leonida, the series’ Florida, and nothing shown so far references Ganton or the Families. For what Rockstar has actually confirmed, including the release date for gta 6, check the current intel rather than forum speculation.

What do you get for spraying all 100 tags?

Four weapons spawn permanently in the Johnson House kitchen: a Tec-9, a sawn-off shotgun, Molotov cocktails and an AK-47. Grove Street homies also start carrying better guns when you recruit them.
