Every working GTA 5 story mode cheat on Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, with the exact button combo and the in-game phone number for each. Codes are ranked by usefulness first, then listed in full tables so you can find the one you need in seconds.

The fast answer

Cheat codes for GTA 5 Xbox One are entered during gameplay by pressing a sequence of D-pad directions, face buttons and bumpers. The same button strings work on Xbox Series X and Series S, because the 2022 next-gen release kept the full cheat system from the 2014 Xbox One version.

You also get a second method on every Xbox from the One onward: dial a 1-999 number on your character’s phone. Both methods trigger the same effect, and a “Cheat activated” notice appears at the top left of the screen when the input is accepted.

Button codes have to be fast. The game gives you roughly a second between presses, so if the combo fails, you usually paused too long or confused LB with LT. Phone codes have no timing pressure, which is why most players end up using them for the longer sequences.

How we ranked the cheats

Thirty-five cheats is a lot to scroll through, so the first list below is the ten that actually matter. We ranked them on four things.

• How often you reach for it. A cheat you trigger every session beats a novelty you try once.
• Time saved. Spawning a Buzzard beats a 15-minute drive to Fort Zancudo and a five-star chase out of it.
• Risk to your save. Cheats that can get you killed, like Skyfall, rank below cheats that keep you alive.
• Whether it unlocks something you cannot otherwise do. Moon gravity and Director Mode score here even though nobody uses them every day.

Novelty effects like drunk mode still get a place in the full tables, just not in the top ten.

1. Invincibility (top pick)

This is the top pick because it turns every other cheat into a safe experiment. You take no damage from bullets, explosions, fire or falls for five minutes, then it quietly switches off. The timer is the catch. Nothing warns you when it expires, so if you are standing in the middle of a six-star firefight at minute five, you die. Re-enter the code before the time runs out to reset the clock.

It also works during missions. That makes it the easiest way to brute-force a hard checkpoint, though you will not earn achievements in that session.

2. Give Weapons and ammo

This is the second most used code on any platform because Ammu-Nation prices add up fast early in the story, when Franklin is still counting his cash from the repossession jobs.

3. Buzzard Attack Helicopter

The Buzzard is the most expensive thing on the cheat list by a wide margin. Buying one legitimately from Warstock Cache & Carry in story mode costs $1,750,000, and you will not have that kind of money until the Union Depository job. The cheat drops one next to you with homing missiles and miniguns for free. Spawn it in an open space. If a building is in the way, the helicopter clips into it and explodes on arrival.

4. Lower Wanted Level

Each entry drops your wanted level by one star. At three stars you dial it three times. It is faster than hiding under a bridge, and unlike the invincibility cheat it never times out on you. Note the direction order carefully. Right first lowers the stars; Left first raises them, which is the next code.

5. Max Health and Armor

Full health and a full armor bar instantly. Less dramatic than invincibility, but it is permanent until you take damage, and it does not block anything else from working. Pair the two: invincibility for the fight, health and armor as the fight ends and the timer is about to expire.

6. Skyfall

Teleports you several thousand feet above Los Santos with no parachute. It is the longest button code in the game, 16 inputs, which is why nearly everyone dials it instead. You can survive the landing. Steer so you hit the ground head first and your character takes the fall without dying. Any other orientation ends with a wasted screen. Use it with the parachute cheat below for a free skydive from the highest altitude the game allows.

7. Give Parachute

8. Comet

The Pfister Comet is the best handling car on the cheat list and the one you will actually enjoy driving across Blaine County. It sells for $100,000 at Legendary Motorsport in story mode, so the cheat saves real money early on. The Rapid GT costs more but handles worse, which is why the Comet makes the top ten and the Rapid GT does not.

9. Slow Motion Aim

Aiming down sights slows time, and it stacks. Enter the code once for mild slow motion, twice for heavier, three times for the maximum effect. A fourth entry turns it off. Michael’s special ability already does this, so the cheat matters most when you are playing as Franklin or Trevor and want the same bullet-time edge in a shootout.

Each entry advances the weather one step through the game’s cycle, from extra sunny through clouds and smog to rain and thunderstorms, then back around. It is here for one practical reason: screenshots and Rockstar Editor clips. A thunderstorm over the Vinewood sign at night is one of the best looking states the engine has, and you would otherwise wait real-world hours for it.

A few of these deserve a line of explanation beyond the table.

Fast Swim is the quietest useful cheat in the game. Swimming to the sunken wrecks off the coast for the hidden packages, or to the Kraken spawn, is painfully slow by default. With this on you cover open water at roughly jet ski pace.

Super Jump sends you about ten metres straight up on a tap and higher if you hold X. It is the only way to reach some rooftops without a helicopter. The fall damage still applies on the way down unless invincibility is active.

Explosive Melee turns every punch and kick into a grenade. Fun for about a minute. It also kills you if you punch something while standing next to a car, because the car explodes.

Flaming Bullets and Explosive Ammo cannot run at the same time. Entering one while the other is active replaces it.

Moon Gravity only feels different once you get in a vehicle. On foot the jump height barely changes, but a Sanchez launched off the Vinewood Hills roads will float for a very long time.

Drunk Mode gives your character the stumbling walk from the “Did Somebody Say Yoga?” aftermath and blurs the camera. Driving in this state is harder than it sounds.

Slippery Cars strips most of the grip from every vehicle. Drifts become effortless and braking becomes theoretical.

The Buzzard is the obvious headline, but a couple of the cheaper spawns are more useful than they look.

The PCJ-600 is one of the fastest bikes in story mode and a far better choice than the Sanchez for Los Santos streets. The Sanchez wins the moment you leave asphalt, which is why both exist. Spawn the Sanchez at the base of Mount Chiliad and you have a ten-minute climb ahead of you instead of thirty on foot.

The BMX is the stunt tool. Combine it with Super Jump and Moon Gravity and you have the setup behind most of the viral GTA bike clips from the Xbox One era. The bike also fits through alleys and across pedestrian bridges nothing else can.

The Stunt Plane spawns on the ground, so you need a straight road to take off. The Duster does too, and it is slower but far more forgiving. Spawning either on the Los Santos International runway gets you airborne fastest, though you will collect a wanted level for trespassing.

The Trashmaster is heavy enough to shrug off most collisions and the Stretch is pure novelty. The Caddy is quick to spawn and useful on golf course terrain, which is about it.

Phone-only cheats: the four with no button code

Four cheats exist only as phone numbers on Xbox One and Series X|S. Three of them spawn vehicles that started life as bonuses for players who moved their saves from Xbox 360, and each has an unlock condition. If you dial the number and nothing happens, you have not met it yet.

Duke O’Death is the armored muscle car from the “Duel” event, which triggers in the desert when a driver starts ramming you in a black Duke. Survive it and the car becomes available at a few parking spots and through this number. It takes dozens of rounds of small arms fire before it catches fire, which makes it a legitimate tool for the Trevor rampages.

Dodo is the only seaplane in the game and the only aircraft you can land on the Alamo Sea without destroying it. The random event that unlocks it has you stealing a Dodo from a dock on the coast. Finish that and the plane spawns through the phone wherever there is water or flat ground nearby.

Kraken spawns near the water when you call the number. The Wildlife Photography Challenge that unlocks it is a long one, and most players find the mountain lion the hardest photo to get. Once you have it, the Kraken is faster and sturdier than the standard submersible from the Merryweather missions.

Director Mode drops you into the Rockstar Editor’s character sandbox, where you play as any unlocked actor, from story characters to animals, with gameplay toggles for invincibility and wanted level built into the menu. You can also reach it through the Rockstar Editor option in the pause menu, so the phone number is a shortcut rather than a secret. Your mission progress is untouched because Director Mode runs outside the story save.

Button codes or phone numbers: which to use on Xbox

Both methods work on Xbox One and Series X|S, so pick by situation.

Button codes are faster when you are mid-fight. Lower Wanted Level is ten inputs and takes two seconds once it is in muscle memory, while opening the phone and dialing takes six or seven. The downside is the timing window. If your thumb slips from LB to LT the code silently fails, and the longer sequences like Skyfall and Weapons are easy to fumble.

Phone numbers have no timing window at all. You can dial slowly, correct a wrong digit, and the game waits. They are also the only route to the Duke O’Death, Dodo, Kraken and Director Mode. The cost is the pause while the call connects, roughly two seconds, during which you cannot shoot.

One more practical point. The game blocks the phone during some scripted sequences and while you are swimming underwater, but button codes still register. If you need Fast Swim while already submerged, the button combo is the only way.

Xbox 360 vs Xbox One vs Series X|S

GTA 5 launched on Xbox 360 on 17 September 2013, arrived on Xbox One on 18 November 2014 with the enhanced version, and got the Series X|S release on 15 March 2022. The cheat list changed at the first jump and then stayed put.

• Xbox 360: Button codes only. All 31 button sequences in this article work. No phone cheats, no Duke O’Death, Dodo or Kraken, no Director Mode.
• Xbox One: Everything above. Phone cheats were added with this version and the four phone-only cheats arrived with it.
• Xbox Series X|S: Identical to Xbox One. The 2022 version added the performance modes and GTA Online improvements, but story mode cheats were untouched. The same button codes and 1-999 numbers apply.

What cheats break, and what they do not

Here is the full accounting, because the rumor mill on this topic is noisy.

Achievements lock for the session. The moment a code activates, the game flags the session and stops awarding achievements until you reload. It does not lock permanently and it does not corrupt anything. Load a clean save and you are back to normal.

Cheats do not persist. Invincibility, weapons, spawned vehicles and weather all vanish when you reload. If you parked a cheat Buzzard in Michael’s garage and saved, it will not be there next time. You cannot store spawned vehicles.

Mission progress is fine. Completing a mission with cheats active still counts toward 100%. The mission result screen will show your gold medal objectives as normal. The only cost is the achievement lock mentioned above.

Autosave can sneak cheats into your next session’s state. This is the one real trap. The game autosaves after missions and certain events. If you had a wanted level cheat active, the save itself is clean, but if you die with cheats on and the game reloads to a checkpoint, your cheats are gone and you may be in a worse spot than you expected. Treat invincibility’s five-minute timer with respect in missions.

The game can reject codes. Button codes do not work during cutscenes, phone calls, or the first few seconds after a mission starts. Wait for control to return fully.

Cheats that do not exist on Xbox

Search traffic for GTA 5 cheats is full of codes that were never in the game, usually copied across from older titles or invented outright. None of these exist.

There is no money cheat. Not on Xbox, not on PlayStation, not on PC. Rockstar left it out of GTA 5 deliberately because the story mode stock market (LCN and BAWSAQ) ties in-game money to the assassination missions, and GTA Online shares the economy with real-money Shark Cards. Any video promising a GTA 5 money code on Xbox One is showing you a glitch, a mod, or an edited clip. There is no tank cheat. GTA San Andreas players remember the “gta sa rhino cheat” that dropped a tank at your feet. GTA 5 has no equivalent. The only way to get a Rhino in story mode is to steal one from Fort Zancudo, which means a four-star response the moment you cross the fence.

There are no online cheats. Every code in this article is story mode only. GTA Online rejects button inputs and phone cheats entirely, and the only things that work there are the exploits Rockstar patches every few weeks.

There is no infinite ammo code. The Weapons cheat refills your ammo each time you enter it, which is the closest you get.

There is no “all cars” or “unlock everything” code. Vehicle cheats spawn exactly 14 specific vehicles, listed above. Nothing else.

There is no code for a jetpack, big head mode or pedestrian riot. Those are from older games in the series and never made the jump to GTA 5.

Best cheat combinations

Individual cheats are fine. Stacking them is where story mode gets interesting, and these are the pairings worth your time.

Skydive tour: Skyfall, then Parachute immediately. You get the maximum altitude the game allows with a canopy to open whenever you like. Dial Change Weather a few times first for a thunderstorm backdrop.

Rooftop access: Super Jump plus Invincibility. You can reach any rooftop in Los Santos by bouncing up the building’s lower levels, and the invincibility handles the falls when you misjudge.

Moon bike: Moon Gravity, BMX, Super Jump. Head to the Vinewood Hills, find a steep driveway, and ride off the edge. The bike floats for long enough to set up a landing on the roof of a mansion.

Zero-cost rampage: Weapons, Explosive Ammo, Invincibility, then Raise Wanted Level dialed five times. The military shows up at five stars and you have five minutes of invulnerability to deal with it. Dial Lower Wanted Level five times when the timer is about to lapse.

Air superiority: Buzzard, then Invincibility once you are in the air. The invincibility protects you, not the helicopter, so the Buzzard can still be shot down. Keep a Parachute in your pocket for exactly that.

Slow motion heist feel: Slow Motion Aim at level two, Flaming Bullets. Franklin’s gunfights look like a Michael special ability with a fire effect on every hit. Level three slow motion is too slow to be practical in a real shootout.

Finding the cheats that actually fit your save

Where you are in the story changes which codes are worth it.

Early game, playing as Franklin, cash is tight and the Weapons code and Comet spawn do the most. You have no helicopter access yet and the Buzzard is a genuine shortcut across the map. Lower Wanted Level is worth memorizing before the Vangelis repossession missions.

Mid game, after the Jewel Store Job and the move to Blaine County, Trevor’s missions push you into the desert and the Sanchez, Duster and Fast Swim cheats earn their keep. This is also when the “Duel” random event is most likely to trigger, which opens up the Duke O’Death number.

Late game, with all three characters and the heist money flowing, the vehicle cheats matter less because you can buy whatever you want. The world cheats, Director Mode and the weather code take over as the reason to still dial a number.

Do GTA 5 cheat codes work on Xbox Series X and Series S?
