GTA 6 file size on PS5 and Xbox: how much space to clear before preload
Rockstar has not announced the GTA 6 file size for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, and no store listing has published a confirmed install figure. The 300GB number circulating in headlines comes from anonymous accounts with no verified record, so treat it as a RUMOR. This page tracks what is official, what is claimed, and how much free space you should clear before preload opens.
Last checked: ahead of the 19 November 2026 launch. We update this page as Rockstar, Sony, Microsoft and the console storefronts confirm details.
What we know
Rockstar’s November 2025 Newswire post set the final launch date at 19 November 2026, after the game slipped from autumn 2025 to May 2026 and then to November. That post, and the Take-Two earnings release that accompanied it, said nothing about install size, disc contents or day-one patch weight. Every official GTA 6 communication so far has been limited to the two trailers, the Leonida setting, the two protagonists Lucia and Jason, the date and the platforms.
Three facts are confirmed and worth holding onto when a trending post claims otherwise.
- The game ships on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Microsoft requires every Series X title to run on Series S, so a Series S build exists and will be delivered through Smart Delivery.
- No PC version has been announced. Rockstar launched GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC well after consoles, and nothing says GTA 6 breaks that pattern, so PC file size speculation has no basis right now.
- The PlayStation Store and Xbox Store do not show a GTA 6 install size. When a listing goes live with pre-orders, the size field will appear, and even then it is often a placeholder that changes before launch.
That last point matters because the storefront size field is the most common source of “leaked” file sizes for big launches. Sony’s store has shown provisional figures for games months out, and those numbers have been revised by tens of gigabytes once the gold build was submitted. If you see a screenshot of a store listing with a GTA 6 size on it, check the date and whether the listing is still live before you believe it.
What Rockstar’s own history tells you
Rockstar’s last two tentpole releases give you the only grounded benchmark available. Red Dead Redemption 2 required roughly 100GB on PS4 at launch, which was unusually large for 2018 and forced Rockstar to ship it on two Blu-ray discs on PS4 and Xbox One. GTA V on PS5 and Series X, the 2022 Expanded and Enhanced version, installs at well under 100GB including GTA Online.
Those numbers are useful for scale, not prediction. GTA 6 targets higher-resolution textures, a larger and denser Leonida map than Los Santos, and far more voiced dialogue, all of which push size up. Against that, Rockstar built its engine around aggressive asset streaming, and both current consoles have hardware decompression blocks that let developers ship more compressed data than the last generation allowed. Where those forces net out is exactly what nobody outside Rockstar can state yet.
The disc limit is confirmed physics
Current-generation game discs are UHD Blu-ray with a 100GB capacity. Any game larger than that either ships on multiple discs or installs part of the data from the disc and downloads the rest. Red Dead Redemption 2 used two discs; most modern games over 100GB use a single disc plus a mandatory download.
For you, the practical consequence is this: buying GTA 6 on disc does not mean you avoid a large download. If the install exceeds 100GB, which every reasonable reading of the trailers suggests, physical buyers will still need a healthy download on top of the disc install. A disc only saves you the portion that fits on it. Plan your free space as if you were a digital buyer, then treat any disc-side saving as a bonus.
What is rumored

Every figure below is unconfirmed. We name the source and grade it so you can weigh it yourself.
The 300GB claim
The number that spread fastest came from social accounts posting that GTA 6 “requires a 300GB download” and that this would “limit” Xbox Series S owners. Entertainment and tech news sites picked the claim up with the usual “eye-watering” framing, and community threads amplified it from there. No outlet that reported it traced the figure to a Rockstar employee, a Sony or Microsoft certification document or a live store listing.
Source: anonymous social accounts, reproduced by aggregator sites. Grade: anonymous, no track record. Our call: RUMOR, low credibility. A 300GB install would be three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2 and larger than any single-player console release to date. That is not impossible for a 2026 Rockstar game, but it is a claim that needs evidence, and none has surfaced.
The “limiting Series S” angle also misreads how Xbox works. Series S receives its own build through Smart Delivery, and Series S installs are routinely smaller than the Series X equivalent because the console streams lower-resolution textures. Even if the Series X figure were accurate, the Series S number would be different, and probably lower.
The Cyberleek posts
A separate wave of coverage cited an account called Cyberleek, which posted claimed storage details for GTA 6 that several entertainment sites ran as a “reveal.” The account has no record of verified Rockstar scoops that we can find, provides no documentation, and the posts have not been corroborated by any reporter with a proven record on Rockstar, such as Jason Schreier of Bloomberg or Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming. We will not speculate about who runs the account.
Source: anonymous leaker account. Grade: unverified, no track record. Our call: RUMOR, low credibility. If a figure from this account appears in your feed, treat it as a guess that reached a wide audience, not intel.
Community datamine theories
Reddit threads, including one titled “GTA 6 file size might have been found,” have tried to derive a size from store metadata, trailer analysis and the 2022 development build breach. Rockstar confirmed the 2022 breach happened, and the footage that leaked was an early build, so nothing in it reflects shipping asset sizes. We do not link to or describe that material. Store metadata theories rely on reading placeholder fields that, as noted above, are regularly wrong for unreleased games.
Source: community analysis. Grade: community or datamine. Our call: RUMOR, speculative. Useful as discussion, not as a basis for buying an SSD.
What is not even rumored
Nobody credible has claimed a day-one patch size, a separate GTA Online install size, or an Xbox Series S figure distinct from Series X. If the structure of GTA V on PS5 repeats, where GTA Online can be installed as a standalone package, the single-player install and the online install could be listed separately. That is a pattern observation, not a report. Status: Not announced.
What it means

Until Rockstar publishes a number, the sensible move is to plan for the upper end of the realistic range rather than the viral one. We would not buy storage on the strength of a 300GB rumor, but we would not count on squeezing GTA 6 onto a drive with 120GB free either.
The working assumption we use internally: budget for more than Red Dead Redemption 2 and leave headroom for a day-one patch and the first month of updates. Rockstar patched Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA Online heavily in their first weeks, and modern patches on consoles often require temporary space equal to a large chunk of the install while the system rebuilds files. Free space equal to the install size alone is not enough; you want install size plus patch headroom.
Usable storage on each console
Advertised capacities overstate what you can use, because the operating system reserves a slice. These are the widely reported usable figures for current retail models.
| Console | Advertised SSD | Usable for games (approx.) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (2020 model) | 825GB | 667GB | Expandable via internal M.2 slot |
| PS5 Slim | 1TB | 848GB | Same M.2 slot |
| PS5 Pro | 2TB | 1.86TB | Same M.2 slot |
| Xbox Series X | 1TB | 802GB | Expansion card slot |
| Xbox Series X 2TB | 2TB | 1.8TB | Expansion card slot |
| Xbox Series S 512GB | 512GB | 364GB | Expansion card slot, digital only |
| Xbox Series S 1TB | 1TB | 802GB | Expansion card slot, digital only |
The console most exposed is the 512GB Series S. With roughly 364GB usable, a single Rockstar-scale install plus one or two other large titles fills it. That is the real “limiting” story, and it applies to every big 2026 release, not GTA 6 specifically.
How much to clear, by console
With no confirmed number, we give you a planning target rather than a precise figure. Clear at least 150GB of free space on any console before preload, and aim for 200GB if you can manage it without deleting something you play weekly. If Rockstar confirms a size above that, we will update this section the same day. If it confirms a smaller one, you lose nothing by having cleared the room early.
For a 512GB Series S, 200GB free means roughly half your usable drive. That is the point at which a storage expansion card stops being a luxury. For PS5 owners on the original 825GB model, 200GB free is manageable if you archive two or three large games you have finished.
External storage rules you need to know
Both platforms let you attach extra storage, but the rules on what you can play from where are strict, and they are different on each console. Buying the wrong drive type is the most common mistake we see ahead of big launches.
PlayStation 5
Sony splits storage into two categories with different rules.
- Internal M.2 SSD slot: You can install a PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive from 250GB up to 8TB. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or faster and requires a heatsink that fits the bay dimensions. Games installed here run exactly as they do on the built-in SSD, so this is the right upgrade if you want GTA 6 to live on expanded storage permanently.
- USB extended storage: You can connect a USB hard drive or SSD and store PS5 games on it, but you cannot play PS5 games from it. The console copies the game back to internal storage when you want to play, which is faster than redownloading but still takes time and still needs internal free space. PS4 games can run directly from USB; GTA 6 is not a PS4 game, so that exception does not help you.
The practical plan on PS5: if your internal drive is tight, move finished games to USB storage now to free the room, and put GTA 6 on the internal SSD or an M.2 upgrade. Do not plan to run GTA 6 from a USB drive, because the system will not allow it.
Xbox Series X|S
Microsoft’s rules are simpler but less flexible.
- Storage Expansion Card: Series X|S optimized games can run from the official expansion cards, available from Seagate and Western Digital in 512GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities. These slot into the back of the console and perform like internal storage. This is the only external option that lets you play GTA 6 directly.
- USB 3.0 drives: You can store any game on a USB hard drive or SSD, but games built for Series X|S will not launch from it. The console moves them to internal storage or an expansion card first. Backward-compatible Xbox One titles can run from USB, which again does not apply to GTA 6.
The 512GB Series S owner’s best path is a 1TB expansion card, which more than triples usable space. The card is not cheap relative to the console, which is why the Series S storage question keeps resurfacing in launch coverage.
Quick comparison
| Storage type | PS5: play GTA 6 from it? | Xbox Series X|S: play GTA 6 from it? |
|—|—|—|
| Built-in SSD | Yes | Yes |
| PS5 internal M.2 upgrade | Yes | Not applicable |
| Xbox Storage Expansion Card | Not applicable | Yes |
| USB external HDD or SSD | No, storage only | No, storage only |
Preload: what to expect and when
Rockstar has not announced a preload window, and no store listing has gone live with a pre-order, so preload timing carries the status Not announced. Platform norms give you a baseline. Sony typically opens preload for digital pre-orders roughly 48 hours before a game’s unlock time, with some publishers negotiating earlier. Xbox usually lets you pre-install as soon as the publisher flags the package as ready, which for major releases is often a week or more ahead.
Preload on Rockstar titles has history worth knowing. Red Dead Redemption 2 preloaded on consoles ahead of its October 2018 launch, and GTA V’s PS5 and Series X versions preloaded before the March 2022 release. Expect the same here, and expect a day-one patch on top, because Rockstar’s launches have always carried one. Our “gta 6 pre order” guide covers when pre-orders open and which editions are confirmed, and it will note the preload date the moment a storefront lists it.
Preload does not change how much space you need. It changes when you need it. Clearing space the week preload opens is fine; clearing it the night before unlock, while a 100GB-plus download is queued behind a full drive, is how you miss your “gta 6 release time” window.
Quick steps: clear space for GTA 6 preload
- Check free space in Settings (PS5: Storage; Xbox: Storage devices) and note the usable figure.
- Move finished games to USB storage rather than deleting them, so you can bring them back later without redownloading.
- Delete game captures and screenshots you no longer need; large video libraries quietly eat tens of gigabytes.
- Uninstall separate GTA Online or Warzone-style packages for games you have stopped playing.
- Target at least 150GB free, 200GB if possible, then pre-order so preload starts the moment it opens.
- Leave the console in rest mode or on with auto-download enabled so the preload and day-one patch pull overnight.
Agent's note
On PS5, the “Games and Apps” storage view lists each title’s size and lets you delete individual pieces of a game, such as a single-player campaign you finished while keeping multiplayer. Trimming three or four games this way often frees more than deleting one whole title you still play.
Heads up
A download that fails from lack of space on PS5 or Xbox can leave a partial install you have to delete and restart. Clear room before preload begins, not during. And never download GTA 6 from anywhere other than the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store or a retail disc; third-party “early build” downloads are malware or ban bait.
Reading the next wave of size claims

Expect the file size rumor cycle to intensify as trailer 3 and pre-orders approach. Every “gta 6 trailer” drop generates a round of frame-by-frame analysis, and someone will extrapolate an install size from texture detail or map scale, usually with a confident image of a storefront listing attached. Here is how to grade what you see.
- A number from Rockstar Newswire, the PlayStation Blog, Xbox Wire, or the live store page with the game’s official listing is CONFIRMED.
- A number from a reporter with a proven Rockstar record, citing sources, is a credible RUMOR, and we will say so here.
- A number from an anonymous account, a text screenshot with no source, or a video thumbnail is low-grade RUMOR until corroborated, however many views it has.
- A number derived from the 2022 breach is irrelevant to the shipping game and we will not reproduce it.
Gameplay reviews and launch guides across the community will all eventually quote the same official figure. Until that figure exists, anyone quoting one with certainty is guessing.
FAQ
What is the confirmed GTA 6 file size?
There is no confirmed GTA 6 file size. Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony and Microsoft have not published an install or download figure, and no store listing shows one. Any number you see is a rumor or a placeholder.
Is GTA 6 really 300GB?
The 300GB figure comes from anonymous social media accounts and was repeated by news aggregators without a verifiable source. We grade it RUMOR with low credibility. It would be far larger than any previous Rockstar release, and nothing official supports it.
How much space should I clear for GTA 6 on PS5?
Clear at least 150GB, ideally 200GB, on the internal SSD or an M.2 expansion drive. PS5 games cannot run from USB external storage, so free space on a USB drive does not count toward the install.
How much space do I need on Xbox Series S?
Plan for the same 150GB to 200GB headroom. The Series S version will likely be smaller than Series X because of lower-resolution assets, but no figure is confirmed. On the 512GB Series S, with about 364GB usable, a 1TB Storage Expansion Card is the cleanest solution.
Can I play GTA 6 from an external hard drive?
No, on either console. PS5 only runs PS5 games from the internal SSD or an M.2 upgrade. Xbox Series X|S only runs optimized games from the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card. USB drives work for storage and transfer only.
Will the disc version need a download?
There is no disc version. Rockstar confirmed the physical box contains a download code, not a disc, so every buyer downloads the full game plus the day-one patch regardless of which edition they purchase.
When does GTA 6 preload start?
Not announced. Platform norms suggest around 48 hours before unlock on PS5 and potentially earlier on Xbox, but Rockstar has not set a date. We will update this page and our pre-order guide when a storefront confirms it.
Is there a PC file size?
No. GTA 6 is confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, and no PC version has been announced. Any PC system requirements or file size you see are fabricated.
