GTA 6 clears Game Awards 2026 cutoff, but jury nomination is not guaranteed

CONFIRMED

Grand Theft Auto VI will be eligible for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026. Insider Gaming reports that the show’s published 2026 eligibility criteria confirm the November 19 launch lands inside the window. Eligibility is now settled. Whether the voting jury can actually play the game and nominate it in time is a separate question, and nobody official has answered it.

What we know

Insider Gaming reported on October 15, 2026 that The Game Awards’ “Cutoff Date for Eligibility” information for 2026 confirms GTA 6 has made the cut. The outlet reproduced the criteria as an image and noted the game launches November 19. This is a report on the show’s own published rules, not a tip.

The launch date itself is not in doubt. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reaffirmed it on a quarterly earnings call, referring to “the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto VI on November 19th,” as quoted by Insider Gaming. The May 21, 2026 Q4 FY2026 earnings report had already held the date, with Zelnick saying the company expects “new record levels of operating performance driven by the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI,” per Shacknews.

The Players’ Voice category allows shipping through November 30, as quoted by TheGamer, VICE and Instant Gaming. Those outlets are not on our approved list, so treat the exact phrasing as pending verification against the TGA FAQ. The practical result either way: GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S has roughly one day of availability before the cutoff. The ceremony is scheduled for December 10, 2026.

Two claims circulating around this story do not hold up. First, Gameranx framed the cutoff as TGA “changing” its rules to let GTA 6 in. TheGamer notes the November 20 date is in line with prior years: November 22 in 2024 and November 21 in 2025. Screen Rant and OpenCritic had previously observed the cutoff is typically the third Friday in November, which November 20, 2026 is. No rule change is evident.

Second, a late-September argument on an Alanah Pearce livestream, covered by Dexerto, suggested GTA 6 was too late for the 2026 show. TGA’s updated eligibility information, as reported by Insider Gaming, settles that point. Pearce’s underlying concern, however, was about jurors having time to play and vote. That concern stands.

Gameranx reported on October 15, 2026 that Rockstar will send GTA 6 review copies to reviewers before the end of October so reviews can land ahead of launch. Gameranx labels this a rumor itself, and the original source was not located. We grade it D. Rockstar has issued no statement on review copies, embargoes or early access that we could find, and a September 28 tracker noted no review embargo had been announced.

Separately, 7mmo relayed an Insider Gaming report, based on unnamed sources, that GTA 6 reviews will go live before November 19 and that critics will get more than two weeks of early access. We were unable to retrieve the original Insider Gaming article, so this is secondhand and unconfirmed. Grade D until Rockstar publishes review terms.

Both rumors matter for one reason: if jurors receive early access, the nomination window becomes workable. If they do not, it may not.

While TGA has published its 2026 eligibility cutoff of November 20, 2026, at 9 pm PT on its official FAQ page, as confirmed by multiple outlets on October 15, 2026, the internal jury nomination and voting schedule dates for 2026 remain unpublished. For reference, GTA Intel, citing Pearce’s account, reports that in 2025 first-round jury nominations were due November 4, nominees were announced November 17 and the final vote was November 24. If 2026 follows a similar track, most of the nomination process would happen before or around GTA 6’s launch day.

We also do not know whether Rockstar plans any review program, when an embargo would lift, or whether jurors fall under the same arrangement as press.

The cutoff is a formality that has been cleared. VICE’s point is the operative one: eligibility does not equal nomination, and a nomination remains up to the voting jury. A game that ships one day before the deadline, with no announced review access, is asking a jury to evaluate it on a timeline nobody has confirmed. The two review-copy rumors would resolve that if true, but they are unverified. Until Rockstar or TGA says more, the Game of the Year question stays open.
