GTA 6 roads reportedly significantly narrower than GTA 5, per Schreier video

RUMOR

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier says in a follow-up video to his GTA VI cover story that the game’s roads are “significantly narrower” than GTA V’s, with denser traffic, citing Rockstar North art director Aaron Garbut. The same video, as relayed by secondary outlets, says Rockstar spent a long stretch trying to replace the weapon wheel before returning to it. Rockstar has published neither detail, and headlines promising an “RDR2-like gun system” do not match what the reporting describes.

What we know

Take-Two has repeatedly confirmed that GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. CEO Strauss Zelnick restated the date in the Q4 FY2026 earnings release on May 21, 2026, and again in August, as relayed by Insider Gaming. The date itself came from a delay that Variety reported in November 2025, which moved the game off May 26, 2026.

Bloomberg published Schreier’s long-form making-of feature on October 14, 2026, built on a late-September visit to Rockstar North in Edinburgh and interviews with studio leadership, including head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe. Schreier announced the visit and the cover story on October 13. Bloomberg reports that Garbut is one of three “heads of development” on the project.

The roads and weapon-wheel details did not appear in that article. They come from a separate, roughly 18-minute Schreier video covering material that missed the cut. Secondary write-ups began appearing on October 19.

What is rumored

According to write-ups of the video from MP1st, TwistedVoxel, GamesRadar and Mezha, Schreier says Garbut told him the narrower roads were an early development decision. The tradeoff, per Garbut as relayed, was more buildings and a different approach to constructing the open world. This is a first-hand developer statement passed on by a reporter with a strong record on Rockstar, so it is likely accurate. RockstarSpy has not reviewed the primary video, and these details rest on secondary coverage.

The same video reportedly says Rockstar spent “months, if not years” testing weapon-wheel alternatives, including trays, webs and other interface changes. Mezha’s summary says the team worried a game-like menu would draw attention to what Jason and Lucia cannot carry, and ultimately went back to the traditional wheel.

Separately, fans have long inferred an RDR2-style limit on carried weapons from the September 2022 leak, as discussed by Sportskeeda. Later official material validated much of that leak, but individual interface and weapon-carry details were described at the time as subject to change. This one remains a low-grade rumor.

What we don’t know yet

How much narrower the roads are, or how much denser traffic gets, has not been quantified in anything we have seen. Nor do we know how vehicle handling or police pursuits were tuned around the tighter layout.

MP1st’s framing that “Rockstar confirms” narrower roads does not hold up. No Rockstar Newswire post or Take-Two statement was found. The claim traces to Schreier relaying Garbut.

On weapons, there is no confirmation of any carry limit. MP1st’s own snippet says only that developers “wanted” things to be more like RDR2. Rockstar has not explained what, if anything, it did with that ambition.

What it means

If the road report holds, driving in GTA VI’s Leonida should feel tighter than in Los Santos. Narrower lanes plus heavier traffic means less room to thread through at speed and more buildings pressed up against the street. Garbut’s framing points to a world designed around density rather than wide arterial roads.

Combat is less clear-cut. The weapon-wheel report points toward familiar access to weapons, not a reinvention. On carry rules, Sportskeeda, Kotaku and fan trackers have widely reported that the September 2022 leak and subsequent official marketing material, such as weapon lockers in the Ultimate Edition, strongly indicate an RDR2-style carry limit of two rifles and two pistols.

Rockstar will settle these questions on its own schedule. Until then, treat the roads as likely, the wheel as reported, and the RDR2 guns headline as unsupported.
