Jack Marston profile and story
Jack Marston is the son of John Marston and Abigail Roberts. He grows up inside the Van der Linde gang in Red Dead Redemption 2 and becomes the final playable character in the original Red Dead Redemption. His arc follows a quiet, bookish boy who ends the 1911 to 1914 story by avenging his father’s murder, and it carries the whole series’ argument about whether anyone can escape the outlaw life.
Who Jack Marston is
Jack is the only child of John and Abigail to survive past infancy. He was born into the gang in the mid-1890s, and that is where his trouble starts.
Abigail had been involved with several men in camp before settling with John. John was never sure Jack was his, and he walked out on the gang for roughly a year after the birth. That abandonment hangs over every scene the two share in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Jack himself is gentle, curious and obsessed with books. He would rather read than shoot. Remember that detail, because the series spends two games taking it away from him.
Jack in RDR2 (1899 to 1907)

In Red Dead Redemption 2, Jack is a small child drifting around camp. You see him playing with Abigail, pestering adults and being largely ignored by his father.
The camp years
Arthur Morgan is the adult who pays him the most attention. Arthur reads to him, plays with him, and in the Chapter 3 mission A Fisher of Men takes him fishing at Clemens Point. Arthur lost his own son, Isaac, years earlier, and his patience with Jack reads as grief he never processed. It also reads as a rebuke to John, who keeps failing to show up.
Most of Jack’s camp life plays out in optional moments. If you rush the main missions, you miss most of the relationship. Spend time around Abigail’s tent between chapters and the dialogue fills in.
The kidnapping
Jack’s biggest moment in the main story comes during the Braithwaite and Gray feud in Chapter 3. Dutch van der Linde plays the two Lemoyne families against each other, the plan collapses, and the Braithwaites retaliate by taking Jack.
The gang storms Braithwaite Manor and burns it. Catherine Braithwaite reveals that the boy was handed to Angelo Bronte, the crime boss of Saint Denis. Dutch and Arthur go to Bronte to get him back, and Bronte returns Jack unharmed, making a show of his generosity.
The episode pushes John toward responsibility. It also shows how little control the gang has over the danger it brings to its own children.
Escape and the epilogue
As the gang collapses in Chapter 6, Arthur makes sure John gets out to Abigail and Jack. His whole final stretch is about buying that family a future.
The epilogue jumps to 1907. John, Abigail and Jack settle at Beecher’s Hope in Great Plains, West Elizabeth, with Uncle and help from Charles Smith. Jack is now around 12, still reading, still not a natural with a gun. You can see the distance between him and John start to close, slowly and awkwardly.
The peace does not last. The epilogue ends with John tracking down Micah Bell in American Venom, which brings the Pinkertons’ attention back toward the family. That thread feeds straight into the first game.
Agent's note
In the RDR2 epilogue, take time to talk to Jack at the ranch between missions. His lines about books and knights set up how strange it is to see him holding a rifle four years later.
Jack in RDR1 (1911 to 1914)

Red Dead Redemption opens in 1911 with Edgar Ross of the Bureau holding Abigail and Jack hostage to force John into hunting his old gang. You don’t meet Jack properly until John returns home late in the game.
Teenage Jack
At 16, Jack is sullen and distant. He resents John’s absences and talks about wanting to be a writer. The ranch missions have John teaching him to hunt, ride and work cattle, and you can watch the pair reconnect.
The game lets this run long on purpose. Those chores make the ending land harder.
John’s death and the jump to 1914
In The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed, the US Army and Bureau agents attack Beecher’s Hope. Uncle is killed. John gets Abigail and Jack onto horses, then walks out to face the soldiers alone and is gunned down.
Jack and Abigail bury him on the hill. The game then moves to 1914. Abigail has died and is buried beside John. Jack, now about 19, becomes the playable character.
Remember My Family
Jack keeps hunting, robbing and collecting bounties, the full outlaw toolkit. The final story mission, Remember My Family, unlocks once you are playing as him. A stranger at Beecher’s Hope tells you that Edgar Ross has retired near Lake Don Julio. You confront Ross at the river and kill him in a duel.
The boy who read about knights finishes the series as a killer. That is the point.
Quick steps: play as Jack Marston in RDR1
- Finish The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed as John.
- Let the cutscenes run through the funeral and the 1914 time skip.
- You now control Jack in free roam, with the credits already rolled.
- Go to Beecher’s Hope to trigger Remember My Family.
- Ride south to the San Luis River in Nuevo Paraíso, near Rio del Toro, and win the duel with Ross.
Heads up
In RDR1, John’s save rolls into Jack’s after the 1914 jump. Keep a manual save from before the final John mission if you want to revisit unfinished John content in the same playthrough.
Version note: all of this plays out the same in the original PS3 and Xbox 360 release, the 2023 PS4 and Switch port, and the 2024 PC release. Jack’s story was not changed in any re-release.
Jack in Undead Nightmare

The Undead Nightmare expansion puts the family through a zombie outbreak at Beecher’s Hope. Uncle turns, Abigail is bitten, and Jack is infected too, sending John out to find a cure. It’s a fun detour, but Rockstar treats it as non-canon. Don’t read anything about Jack’s real fate into it.
Why Jack matters to the series
Jack carries the theme of both games. Arthur dies so John can get out. John dies so Jack can get out. Jack picks the gun up anyway.
Players argue about how to read that. Some see Jack as a tragedy, the proof that Dutch’s world eats everyone. Others find him hollow as a playable character, because he inherits John’s skills without much of John’s personality. Both camps are partly right. Jack plays like John because the game wants you to feel that nothing has changed.
His relationship with Arthur also adds weight in hindsight. RDR2 was written after RDR1, so the man who read to Jack by the campfire is a retroactive addition. It works. Knowing Arthur and John both tried to protect that kid makes the river duel with Ross feel like a betrayal of both of them.
Where Jack goes next
Nothing official exists past 1914. Rockstar has not announced a new Red Dead game or confirmed any plans for Jack. Fans regularly pitch him as a lead for a Red Dead Redemption 3, but that is wishful thinking, not intel. The original game’s ending leaves his future open on purpose.
FAQ
Is Jack Marston really John’s son?
The games never confirm it with certainty. John doubts it in Red Dead Redemption 2 because of Abigail’s past in the gang. He raises Jack as his son regardless, and the story treats him as such.
How old is Jack in RDR2?
He’s about four during the main 1899 story and around 12 in the 1907 epilogue at Beecher’s Hope.
Who kidnaps Jack in RDR2?
The Braithwaite family takes him during their feud with the gang in Chapter 3 and hands him to Angelo Bronte in Saint Denis. Bronte later returns him to Dutch and Arthur.
Can you play as Jack Marston?
Yes, but only in the original Red Dead Redemption. After John’s death you control Jack in 1914 for free roam and the final mission, Remember My Family. He is not playable in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Does Jack kill Edgar Ross?
Yes. In Remember My Family, Jack tracks Ross to the San Luis River in Nuevo Paraíso, near Rio del Toro, and kills him in a duel, avenging John.
What happens to Jack after 1914?
Rockstar has never said. The story ends with Jack as a lone gunman, and no sequel or follow-up featuring him has been announced.
