Red Dead Redemption 3 release date rumors and what we actually know
Red Dead Redemption 3 has no release date, no trailer and no official confirmation from Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive. What exists instead is a publishing calendar locked around GTA 6, a candid remark from a Rockstar co-founder who no longer works there, and a steady trickle of social media “leaks” with nothing behind them. This is the full file, with every claim tagged.

What we know
The short answer to “is RDR3 confirmed” is no. Rockstar has not mentioned a third Red Dead Redemption in any Newswire post, trailer, job listing headline or store page. Take-Two has not referenced it on an earnings call. Every page claiming otherwise is working from inference, not evidence.
What Rockstar has done is keep the series visible while it builds GTA 6. Red Dead Redemption, the 2010 original, reached PS4 and Switch in August 2023, PC in October 2024, and PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and mobile in December 2025. Those ports extend the life of a 15-year-old game, which tells you the franchise still has commercial pull. They do not tell you a sequel is in production.
Red Dead Redemption 2 itself is the series’ commercial high-water mark. It launched on October 26, 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One, came to PC on November 5, 2019, and had passed 70 million copies sold by early 2025 according to Take-Two’s quarterly reporting. Seven years after release, it still features in Take-Two’s list of core franchises alongside GTA and NBA 2K, and it still sells every quarter.
The other confirmed data point is negative. In July 2022, Rockstar announced that Red Dead Online would stop receiving major themed updates because development resources were shifting to the next Grand Theft Auto. That decision closed the one live Red Dead product the company had, and it signalled where every available team was going.
Then there is the staffing picture. Dan Houser, who co-founded Rockstar and co-wrote both Redemption games, left the company in March 2020. Lazlow Jones, a long-time writer and producer, departed the same year. Michael Unsworth, another credited writer on Red Dead Redemption 2, has also moved on. Rockstar still employs a deep writing bench, and studios survive departures, but the specific group that shaped Arthur Morgan and John Marston is no longer intact.
Finally, the scheduling constraint everyone has to work around: GTA 6 ships on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, after Rockstar pushed it back from May 2026. A PC version is not announced. Rockstar has released exactly one new game per console generation since 2010, and GTA 6 will absorb its full output through launch and well into the post-launch period for GTA Online.
What is rumored
Every item below is unconfirmed. Each one carries the name of who said it and our read on whether it holds up.
Dan Houser thinks a third game will happen
In a long-form podcast interview in late 2025, Houser said he expects Rockstar to make another Red Dead game at some point, while making clear he will not be involved and has no inside knowledge of current plans. He now runs his own studio, Absurd Ventures, and has not been part of Rockstar’s roadmap for over five years.
Our call: credible as an informed opinion, worthless as confirmation. Houser knows how Rockstar thinks about its biggest properties, and a 70-million-seller does not get shelved. But “I imagine they will” from a former executive is not a development update, and several outlets ran it as something close to one.
A current-gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2 comes first
Multiple industry reporters and dataminers have floated a native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release of RDR2 since 2024, usually alongside the RDR1 port news. Rockstar has not announced it. The 2025 release of the original game on current-gen hardware made the gap more obvious, since the prequel still runs on PS5 through backwards compatibility at 30 frames per second.
Our call: plausible and commercially logical, but still RUMOR. If it happens, it is a stopgap, not a sequel signal.
“RDR3 launches in 2027” or “2028” posts
These circulate on TikTok, X and YouTube every few months, often with mock box art or a fake Rockstar Newswire screenshot. None cite a named source, a document or a store listing.
Our call: DEBUNKED-tier. A 2027 date is incompatible with a company that just moved GTA 6 to late 2026 and has never shipped two tentpole releases within 18 months of each other.
Jack Marston sequel versus another prequel
Fan speculation splits into two camps. One wants a sequel set after 1914, following Jack Marston into an America where the frontier is gone. The other wants a second prequel covering the Van der Linde gang’s early years, the Blackwater massacre or a younger Dutch and Hosea. There is no leak backing either direction.
Our call: pure theory. The series has already done one prequel and one ending, and Rockstar’s history suggests the next game could use entirely new characters, as it did when moving from Red Dead Revolver to Redemption.
The cast wants back in
Roger Clark, who played Arthur Morgan, and Rob Wiethoff, who played John Marston, have both said at conventions and in interviews that they would return in a heartbeat. That part is confirmed as a statement of willingness.
Our call: actors saying they would love to come back is not a hint at development. Arthur dies at the end of RDR2 and John dies in RDR1, so a straightforward return for either lead would require another prequel.
Reading Rockstar’s release cadence

The most useful tool you have is Rockstar’s own timeline. The company does not announce games early, and it does not run parallel flagship releases.
| Game | Developer | Announced | Released | Gap from prior entry |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Revolver | Rockstar San Diego | 2002 (as a Capcom title) | May 2004 | n/a |
| Red Dead Redemption | Rockstar San Diego | February 2009 | May 2010 | 6 years |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Rockstar Games (all studios) | October 2016 | October 2018 | 8 years |
| GTA 6 | Rockstar Games (all studios) | December 2023 | November 2026 | 13 years from GTA 5 |
Two patterns stand out. First, the announce-to-release window has stretched from roughly 15 months for RDR1 to two years for RDR2 and nearly three years for GTA 6. Second, Rockstar now builds one enormous game at a time, with every studio from Edinburgh to San Diego to India pulled onto it.
Run the arithmetic. GTA 6 launches in November 2026. GTA Online’s first year of updates will occupy a large share of the company through 2027. Even if a core team on Red Dead has been doing pre-production quietly, a public reveal before 2028 would break with everything Rockstar has done this decade. Add the current two-to-three-year announce-to-launch gap and the earliest realistic window for a third game is around 2030 to 2031.
That is our position, not a leak. Anyone selling you a tighter date is guessing.
What it means
For you as a player, the practical advice is simple. Red Dead Redemption 2 remains the best open-world game Rockstar has shipped, and most people searching for “red dead 3” have not finished it, let alone the original. The RDR1 current-gen version at 60 frames per second is the right way to see how Arthur’s story hands off to John’s.
Keep your expectations anchored to the official calendar. The “release date for gta 6” is the only firm Rockstar date on the books, and nothing about Red Dead moves until that game is out and stable. If you want early warning, watch three sources: Rockstar’s Newswire, Take-Two’s quarterly earnings calls, and Rockstar’s careers page. A cluster of job listings for Western-themed environment art or horse animation would be a far stronger signal than any influencer.
Agent's note
Take-Two’s investor decks sometimes list the number of titles planned over a multi-year window without naming them. When that figure changes, analysts on the call usually ask what was added or cut, and the answer is often the first public hint of a new Rockstar project.
Heads up
No retailer is taking real Red Dead Redemption 3 pre-orders. Any site offering a “pre-order”, beta key or early download is a scam or a data-harvesting page. Rockstar sells only through the Rockstar Store, PlayStation Store, Xbox Store and licensed retailers, and nothing for RDR3 exists on any of them.
One more framing point. Red Dead Redemption 2 was Rockstar’s last fully new game before GTA 6, and it took eight years to follow the first Redemption. The studio is bigger now, the budgets are larger, and the standards it set for itself in 2018 are the ones it will be judged against. A long silence is not a sign the series is dead. It is how Rockstar has always operated.
FAQ

Is Red Dead Redemption 3 confirmed?
No. Neither Rockstar Games nor Take-Two Interactive has announced it, and no store page or official listing exists. The strongest public statement is Dan Houser, a former Rockstar executive, saying he expects it to happen eventually.
Is there going to be a Red Dead Redemption 3?
Almost certainly yes at some point, given RDR2’s 70-million-plus sales and Take-Two’s description of Red Dead as a core franchise. The question is when, and based on Rockstar’s cadence the answer is unlikely to be before 2030.
Will Arthur Morgan or John Marston return?
Both characters are dead by the end of the existing games, so a return would require another prequel or a flashback structure. Roger Clark and Rob Wiethoff have said they would come back if asked, but no casting or development has been reported.
Is “Red Dawn Redemption 3” a different game?
No. “Red Dawn Redemption 3”, “red redemption 3” and “dead redemption 3” are common misspellings or shorthand for the same unannounced title. There is no separate project under any of those names.
Will RDR3 launch on PC at the same time as consoles?
Rockstar has released every major game on consoles first, with PC following roughly a year later, including RDR2 (12 months) and GTA 5 (18 months). GTA 6 is currently console-only with no PC date, so expect the same staggered approach unless Rockstar changes its policy.
Should I wait for Red Dead Redemption 3 before playing RDR2?
No. RDR2 is a prequel that stands on its own, and the original Red Dead Redemption is now on every current platform. Playing them in release order, RDR2 then RDR1, gives you the full arc of Arthur’s gang and John’s family.
