No. None of GTA 5’s 31 built-in cheat codes work in GTA Online, on any platform. Button combos, PC console commands and phone numbers only trigger in story mode. Below is the full code list for where they do work, the Online tools that come closest to each one, and the shortcuts that get accounts banned.
The short answer: Online has no cheat codes
Searches for a cheat code online GTA 5 players can actually use keep climbing every year, and the answer has not changed since GTA Online launched on October 1, 2013. Rockstar built the cheat system into story mode and walled it off from the multiplayer side completely.
Here is what happens if you try each input method inside a GTA Online session:
- Controller button combos (PlayStation and Xbox): the game ignores them. No “Cheat activated” message appears, and nothing happens.
- PC cheat console: the tilde key that opens the cheat entry box in story mode does nothing in Online.
- Phone numbers: you can dial any 1-999 number on your in-game iFruit or Celltower phone, but the call goes nowhere and no effect triggers.
That applies to public sessions, invite-only sessions, crew sessions and solo public lobbies. A private lobby is still part of GTA Online. It shares the same servers, the same character progress and the same economy, so the same rules apply.
Why Rockstar locked cheats out of Online
The reason is simple. GTA Online runs on a persistent economy. Your GTA$ balance, your rank, your properties and your vehicles are stored on Rockstar’s servers, and you share sessions with up to 29 other players.
Imagine what the invincibility code would do in a free-roam firefight, or what spawning a free Buzzard attack helicopter would do to a player who spent real time grinding for one. Every heist payout, business upgrade and Shark Card purchase only means something if nobody can type their way around it.
Story mode is a single-player sandbox, saved locally, so Rockstar lets you break it however you like.
Where GTA 5 cheats work in 2025

That table answers a big chunk of the search traffic on its own. People looking for cheat codes for GTA 5 online on PS4, or cheat codes for GTA Online on Xbox One, are chasing a mode that no longer exists on those consoles. Rockstar ended GTA Online support on PS4 and Xbox One on December 16, 2024. If you still play on a PS4 or Xbox One, your disc or digital copy runs story mode only, and the story cheats below work fine there.
On PC, Rockstar added BattlEye anti-cheat to GTA Online in September 2024. That covers the Legacy build and now the Enhanced build as well. Story mode cheats are unaffected because they never touch Online.
How to enter cheats in story mode
You get three ways to enter a code, and all of them work on every current version. Button combos are fastest once you know them. The phone is the most forgiving because you can’t fumble a combo halfway through.
Quick steps: activate a GTA 5 cheat in story mode
- Load story mode, not GTA Online, and take control of Michael, Franklin or Trevor.
- On PlayStation or Xbox, enter the button combo quickly during gameplay, with no menu open.
- On PC, press the tilde key (~) to open the cheat box, type the word, and press Enter.
- On any platform, open the phone (Up on the d-pad, or Up Arrow on PC), go to Contacts, choose the keypad and dial the number.
- Watch the bottom of the screen for “Cheat activated” to confirm it worked.
Rapid entry is the part most people get wrong with controller codes. The game expects the full sequence within a short window, so pause too long between inputs and it resets without any warning. If a combo keeps failing, switch to the phone.

This is the code you will reach for most. A random collision with a police cruiser can turn a calm drive into a four-star manhunt, and this wipes one star per entry. Enter it repeatedly to clear your record entirely.

2. Max health and armor
TURTLE on PC, 1-999-887-853 on the phone. It refills your health bar and tops up body armor instantly. You can use it repeatedly, which makes it a better mission tool than invincibility because it never times out on you at a bad moment.
3. Invincibility
Five minutes of god mode. That is long enough to clear a full gang hideout or survive a five-star standoff at Fort Zancudo. The timer is the catch: re-enter it before it runs out or you return to normal health mid-fight.
4. Give weapons
TOOLUP hands you a full arsenal with ammo. It saves a trip to Ammu-Nation early in the story, when money is tight and the gun counter is still mostly locked.
5. Recharge special ability
Each protagonist has a special ability: Michael’s bullet time, Franklin’s driving focus and Trevor’s red mist rage. POWERUP fills the meter, which is huge in long shootouts and heist setups.
6. Spawn Buzzard
An armed attack helicopter with miniguns and homing missiles, dropped right next to you. Nothing in the base game gets you around Los Santos and Blaine County faster while also clearing your path.
7. Skyfall
SKYFALL launches you high above the map in freefall. There is no parachute unless you add one with the parachute code, so it doubles as the game’s most dramatic way to end a play session. It is pure fun and has no practical use, which is why it sits mid-table.
8. Slow motion aim
DEADEYE slows time while you aim, and you can enter it several times to deepen the effect. It turns any character into Michael-level marksman for headshot challenges.
9. Explosive melee attacks
HOTHANDS makes every punch detonate. You can send pedestrians and even cars flying with your fists, though nearby bystanders tend to suffer too.
10. Fast run and fast swim

A few of these stack or cycle. Slow motion and slow motion aim get stronger with repeated entries before switching off. Change weather rotates through conditions one step at a time, so keep entering it until you land on the sky you want.
Vehicle spawn cheats
Vehicle codes drop the vehicle right beside you. Spawn aircraft in open ground, because a Duster or stunt plane appearing in a narrow Santos alley has nowhere to take off.

The closest legit GTA Online equivalents
Online has no codes, but it has plenty of tools that recreate the same effects legitimately. Most cost GTA$, and several need you to register as a CEO or VIP through the SecuroServ app on your phone, which requires owning an Office or having enough cash to register as a VIP.

The CEO abilities are the nearest thing Online has to cheats, and they come with cooldowns and a price tag on purpose. That is the design in a nutshell: Online lets you buy temporary advantages with money you earned, instead of typing them in.

Online “cheats” that get accounts banned
Since codes don’t work, a whole grey market has grown up around GTA Online. You will see YouTube thumbnails promising unlimited money, recovery services offering billions of GTA$ overnight, and paid mod menus. Here is the reality.
Money glitches
Rockstar patches money duplication glitches quickly, often within days of them spreading. Players who exploit them before the patch risk having the money removed, and repeat offenders get suspensions. Rockstar has wiped duplicated cash and vehicles from accounts in past enforcement waves. Mod menus and recovery services
On PC, third-party mod menus inject code into the game to spawn money, teleport and crash other players. Rockstar treats this as a terms-of-service violation. BattlEye now sits on top of Rockstar’s own detection on PC.
The penalties escalate: character resets, temporary suspensions, then permanent bans. Third-party downloads also carry real malware risk, since many of them ask you to disable antivirus protection before you run them. We don’t recommend or point to any of them.
Paid recovery services, where someone logs into your account or drops cash into your lobby, put your account at risk twice: once from Rockstar, and once from handing your login to a stranger.

Modded money in GTA Online can lead to cash removal, rank resets and permanent bans on PC and console. Story mode cheats carry no ban risk because they never touch Rockstar’s servers.

Common cheat problems and fixes
Most “this code doesn’t work” complaints come down to a handful of causes.
You are in GTA Online. The most common one by far. Check the pause menu: if you see an Online tab with your rank, you are in the wrong mode. Switch to story mode from the pause menu.
You entered the combo too slowly. The game wants rapid input. Practice the sequence once with the game paused, then enter it during gameplay without stopping. Or use the phone.
You mixed up the d-pad and the face buttons. Left and Right in these codes always mean the d-pad, never the analog stick.
You are mid-mission. Some codes won’t trigger during certain missions or cutscenes. Finish the mission or retry in free roam.
A vehicle didn’t appear. Spawned vehicles need clear space. Step out of traffic, away from buildings, and try again.
Your phone number didn’t work. Double-check the full number, including the 1-999 prefix, and confirm you are dialing from the keypad rather than texting it.
Fun story mode combos worth trying
Cheats are more interesting when you layer them. A few combos that hold up after a decade:
- Skyfall plus parachute: Enter SKYFALL, then SKYDIVE while falling. You get a full skydive from the top of the map with a soft landing.
- Super jump plus moon gravity: You can clear entire buildings in one bound. Expect a long walk back to wherever you meant to go.
- Slippery cars plus Rapid GT: Spawn the Rapid GT, turn on SNOWDAY and attempt a lap of the Los Santos freeways. It is basically ice racing.
- Drunk mode plus anything with wheels: LIQUOR makes your character stagger and the camera sway. Driving the PCJ-600 like this is as bad an idea as it sounds.
- Flaming bullets plus slow motion: INCENDIARY with SLOWMO turns any gunfight into a slow, fiery action-film sequence that looks great in the Rockstar Editor.
Remember, every one of these disables trophies and achievements for the session. Have your fun, then reload a clean save if you’re still chasing a Platinum or 1000G.
