GTA 5 on PC with Steam and the Rockstar Launcher

GTA 5 on PC now comes in two versions. Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced is the modern DirectX 12 build with ray tracing, DLSS and faster loading. Grand Theft Auto V Legacy is the original 2015 port. If you buy it today on Steam, the Rockstar Store or the Epic Games Store, you get both, and every copy runs through the Rockstar Games Launcher.

Which GTA V version should you play on PC?

Play Enhanced if your PC meets its requirements. It is the version Rockstar is building on. It carries the content that first launched on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it runs Story Mode better on any reasonably modern machine.

Legacy still exists for two groups. The first is players on older hardware that can’t run DirectX 12. The second is players who depend on story mode mods that haven’t been updated for Enhanced yet. Rockstar released Enhanced on March 4, 2025, almost ten years after the original PC launch on April 14, 2015. Existing owners got the upgrade at no cost, and Legacy was renamed rather than removed.

Feature GTA V Enhanced GTA V Legacy
Release on PC March 4, 2025 April 14, 2015
Graphics API DirectX 12 only DirectX 10, 10.1 and 11
Ray tracing Shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion, global illumination None
Upscaling NVIDIA DLSS 3 with Frame Generation, AMD FSR 3 None
Audio Dolby Atmos support Standard surround
Controller DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers Standard controller support
Storage SSD required HDD supported
GTA Online extras Hao’s Special Works, Career Builder, new menu Older feature set
Mod compatibility Many older mods need updated versions Widest library of existing mods

GTA Online runs separate player pools on Enhanced and Legacy. You can’t play with friends on the other version, so agree on one before you start a heist crew.

Where to buy GTA 5 for computer: Steam, Rockstar Store or Epic

Every PC copy ends up in the same place. Steam and Epic sell the game, but the Rockstar Games Launcher handles the actual boot, your Rockstar account and your GTA Online progress. That matters when you pick a store. You aren’t choosing a different version of the game. You’re choosing which library it appears in and whose sales you watch.

Store What you get Launcher needed Notes
Steam GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy as separate library entries Rockstar Games Launcher installs automatically Frequent deep discounts; Steam’s refund policy applies
Rockstar Store Code for the Rockstar Games Launcher Rockstar Games Launcher only Fewest layers; bundles with Shark Cards sometimes offered
Epic Games Store Both versions in your Epic library Rockstar Games Launcher installs automatically Epic gave the game away free in May 2020, so check your library first

GTA 5 on Steam is the most popular route, and the Enhanced store page regularly drops to half price during seasonal sales. Buying GTA 5 on Steam doesn’t remove the Rockstar layer, though. You still log in with a Rockstar Games account the first time you launch.

Agent's note

If you ever grabbed a free game on Epic in 2020, open your Epic library before buying anything. Millions of players claimed GTA V during that May 2020 giveaway and forgot about it, and those copies received the free Enhanced upgrade too.

How to install GTA V on PC through Steam

Quick steps: install GTA 5 on Steam with the Rockstar Games Launcher

  1. Buy Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced on Steam, or find it already in your library.
  2. Install it to an SSD with at least 120 GB free to leave room for updates.
  3. Launch from Steam and let the Rockstar Games Launcher install when prompted.
  4. Sign in with your Rockstar Games account, or create one, and link it to Steam.
  5. Let the launcher finish its own update check before the game boots.
  6. Pick Story Mode or GTA Online from the new main menu.

The account link in step 4 is permanent. Your Steam account ties to one Rockstar Games account, and your GTA Online characters live on that Rockstar account, not on Steam. If you already have a Rockstar account from console play, sign in with that one rather than making a new one.

Installing GTA 5 from the Rockstar Store or Epic works the same way after purchase. You redeem or install, the Rockstar Games Launcher appears, and you sign in.

Common launcher problems and fixes

Most “GTA 5 won’t start” reports on PC come from the launcher, not the game. Three fixes cover the majority of cases:

  • Stuck on “Rockstar Games Launcher is updating.” Close the launcher from the system tray, run Steam as administrator once, and launch again.
  • Signed into the wrong account. Log out inside the Rockstar Games Launcher settings before launching from Steam, or the game will keep loading the cached account.
  • Enhanced refuses to start. Confirm your GPU driver supports DirectX 12 and that the game is on an SSD. Enhanced won’t run on a mechanical drive.

What GTA V Enhanced adds on PC

Enhanced is the same Los Santos and Blaine County, and the same story of Michael, Franklin and Trevor. The changes sit in how the world looks, sounds, loads and feels in your hands.

Stunning visuals with ray tracing and DLSS

The headline upgrade is ray tracing. Enhanced adds ray-traced shadows, reflections, ambient occlusion and global illumination. Global illumination makes the biggest difference on the street. Light now bounces through alleys in Strawberry and under the freeway overpasses the way it should, instead of the flat fill lighting the 2015 version used.

To keep frame rates up, Enhanced supports NVIDIA DLSS 3, including Frame Generation on RTX 40 series cards and newer. AMD owners get FSR 3. On a mid-range RTX card, DLSS is the difference between running ray tracing at playable frame rates and turning it off. Rockstar also improved texture quality, draw distance and vehicle and environment detail over the Legacy build.

Faster loading

Enhanced requires an SSD, and Rockstar built loading around it. Getting into Story Mode and moving between GTA Online sessions is noticeably quicker than in Legacy. Old GTA Online loading screens were long enough to make tea. This is the upgrade most returning PC players notice within five minutes.

Immersive controls on DualSense

Plug in a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller and Enhanced uses its haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Each weapon has a distinct trigger resistance, and you feel road surfaces, damage and gunfire through the controller. Mouse and keyboard still give you more precision for aiming. For driving and flying, the DualSense makes Enhanced feel closer to the PS5 version than to the 2015 port.

3D audio with Dolby Atmos

Enhanced supports Dolby Atmos, so helicopters overhead and gunfight echoes in downtown Los Santos carry height and position on a compatible headset or speaker setup. On plain stereo headphones the gain is smaller, but the mix is still cleaner than Legacy.

GTA Online on Enhanced: exclusive content and new menus

GTA Online is bundled with every PC purchase, and Enhanced brings over the features that console players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have had since 2022.

  • New menu design. The game boots into a selection screen where you choose Story Mode or GTA Online directly, with no need to load into single player first.
  • Career Builder. New players can skip the long early grind. You choose one of four criminal careers (Executive, Gunrunner, Nightclub Owner or Biker) and get GTA$4,000,000 to spend on that business, plus property, a vehicle and weapons. Pick Nightclub Owner if you want a passive income engine. Pick Executive if you want the most varied missions.
  • Hao’s Special Works. These are performance upgrades for a select group of vehicles, available through Hao at the LS Car Meet, along with HSW Time Trials. HSW cars are among the fastest in the game.
  • Access to all current and previous updates. The Enhanced player pool gets the full back catalogue of GTA Online content, from heists to the Cayo Perico and Diamond Casino jobs.

Moving your GTA Online character from Legacy to Enhanced

Rockstar lets you migrate your GTA Online character and progression from Legacy to Enhanced. It’s a one-time transfer, so do it when you’re sure Enhanced is where you’ll stay. Once you move, Enhanced becomes your main home, and later progress on Legacy won’t carry over in a second transfer. For Story Mode saves, check Rockstar Support’s current guidance before deleting any Legacy save files. Back them up either way.

Heads up

GTA Online on PC uses BattlEye anti-cheat. Mod menus, trainers and money tools in Online lead to bans, and there’s no safe version of them. Story Mode is the only place to experiment.

Shark Cash Cards on PC

Shark Cards are the official way to buy GTA$ with real money. You can buy them on PC through the Rockstar Games Launcher, the in-game store or the Steam storefront, depending on where you own the game. Real-money prices vary by region and store, so check yours at checkout. The GTA$ amounts are fixed:

Shark Card GTA$ amount
Red Shark GTA$100,000
Tiger Shark GTA$250,000
Bull Shark GTA$500,000
Great White Shark GTA$1,250,000
Whale Shark GTA$4,250,000
Megalodon Shark GTA$10,000,000

Shark Cards are bound to your Rockstar account and the version you buy them on. Before spending, it’s worth knowing that no GTA Online money cheats actually work. Anything promising free GTA$ is a scam or a ban risk.

GTAV Enhanced system requirements

These are Rockstar’s published specs for Enhanced, with the original 2015 Legacy requirements for comparison. Enhanced wants a lot more GPU and needs an SSD. Legacy will still run on hardware from the early 2010s.

Component Enhanced minimum Enhanced recommended Legacy minimum Legacy recommended
OS Windows 10 64-bit Windows 11 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit
CPU Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD FX-9590 Intel Core i5-9600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 or AMD Phenom 9850 Intel Core i5 3470 or AMD FX-8350
RAM 8 GB 16 GB 4 GB 8 GB
GPU NVIDIA GTX 1630 4 GB or AMD Radeon RX 6400 4 GB NVIDIA RTX 3060 8 GB or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT 8 GB NVIDIA 9800 GT 1 GB or AMD HD 4870 1 GB NVIDIA GTX 660 2 GB or AMD HD 7870 2 GB
DirectX 12 12 10, 10.1, 11 11
Storage SSD required, about 105 GB SSD, about 105 GB HDD supported HDD supported

The 2015 listing asked for 65 GB, but years of GTA Online updates have pushed real installs far past that. Budget at least 120 GB of free space for either version so patches don’t fail mid-download.

Ray tracing needs a GPU with hardware ray tracing support, meaning NVIDIA RTX or AMD Radeon RX 6000 series and newer. DLSS Frame Generation needs an RTX 40 series card or later. Below the recommended tier, turn ray-traced global illumination off first. It’s the most expensive setting, and the game still looks good without it.

Story Mode on PC: cheats, mods and Steam Deck

The PC version of GTA 5 Story Mode is the same campaign as on console, with two advantages: a cheat console and a modding scene.

How to enter cheats on PC

Press the tilde key (~) to open the cheat console, type the code, and press Enter. On non-US keyboards it’s the key to the left of 1. You can also dial phone numbers on the in-game phone, which works identically on every platform. Console players use button combos instead, and we cover those in our GTA 5 cheat codes for PS4 and PS5 guide and the Xbox edition.

Effect PC console code Phone number (all platforms)
Invincibility (5 minutes) PAINKILLER 1-999-724-654-5537
Max health and armor TURTLE 1-999-887-853
Give weapons TOOLUP 1-999-866-587
Lower wanted level LAWYERUP 1-999-5299-3787
Raise wanted level FUGITIVE 1-999-3844-8483
Skyfall SKYFALL 1-999-759-3255
Spawn Buzzard attack helicopter BUZZOFF 1-999-289-9633
Spawn PCJ-600 motorcycle ROCKET 1-999-762-538
Slow motion SLOWMO 1-999-756-966
Fast run CATCHME 1-999-228-2463

These apply to Story Mode in both Enhanced and Legacy. They don’t work in GTA Online. The full list, including weather, vehicle spawns and novelty effects, is in our roundup of every GTA 5 cheat code for story mode.

Heads up

Entering any cheat disables Steam achievements for the rest of that play session. Save your progress before you open the console, then reload a clean save when you want achievements back.

Mods on Enhanced vs Legacy

The PC version’s biggest edge over console is its modding scene, and the version split matters here. Most popular GTA 5 mods were built for Legacy over a decade. Enhanced changed enough under the hood that many tools and scripts needed new builds, and some still don’t have them. If your favorite story mode setup depends on a specific mod, run Legacy until its author confirms Enhanced support. Keep mods out of GTA Online entirely. If you want to start safely, back up your files and use well-known community sources.

Steam Deck and Linux

GTA 5 Story Mode runs on Steam Deck. GTA Online doesn’t. When Rockstar added BattlEye to GTA Online on PC in September 2024, it confirmed that Steam Deck and Linux players would lose Online access. Buy it on Deck for the campaign only.

Is GTA 5 on PC still worth buying?

Yes, especially on sale. Enhanced turns a 2013 game into something that holds up visually next to current releases, and the Story Mode campaign remains one of Rockstar’s best. The 69 story missions and three-protagonist structure still feel distinct from anything else in the genre. GTA Online adds years of content on top, and Career Builder means you don’t start broke.

There’s also a timing argument. Rockstar has CONFIRMED that Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version is Not announced. Rockstar’s history points to a delay before any PC launch: GTA 5 reached PC about 19 months after console, and Red Dead Redemption 2 about a year after. For PC-only players, GTA 5 Enhanced is the newest Rockstar open world you can actually play. We break down the confirmed changes in GTA 6 vs GTA 5.

The one case where we’d hold off is a PC below Enhanced’s minimum spec with no SSD. Legacy still runs, but you’d be buying the 2015 experience, and the modern Online features won’t be there.
