Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5 and how it compares
There is no native PS5 version of Red Dead Redemption 2. You play the PS4 game on PS5 through backward compatibility, and it runs at a locked 30fps with the PS4 Pro’s checkerboard 4K image and much faster loading. This briefing covers what that means in practice, how it compares with every other platform, and what the upgrade rumors are actually worth.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5?
Yes, but only as a PS4 game. Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption 2 on October 26, 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One, and it has never shipped a dedicated PlayStation 5 build.
The PS4 version runs on every PS5 model. Sony’s backward compatibility handles it automatically, so you buy, download and launch it the same way you would any other game on the console.
The PlayStation Store lists it as a PS4 title. That label confuses many buyers, but it is accurate. You are getting the same game PS4 owners have, running on stronger hardware.
The “PS5 release date” question
Searches for a Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 release date assume one exists. It does not.
The closest thing to a launch date is November 12, 2020, the day the PS5 went on sale in its first regions. RDR2 has been playable on the console since that day through backward compatibility. Rockstar has never announced a date for a native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S release.
How to play RDR2 on PS5
The process depends on which PS5 model you own and whether you want a disc or a download. Here is the fastest route for each.
Quick steps: get RDR2 running on PS5
- Disc owners: insert Disc 1 (the install disc) and let the data copy.
- When prompted, swap to Disc 2 (the play disc). Keep Disc 2 in the drive to play.
- Digital buyers: search the PlayStation Store for Red Dead Redemption 2 and buy the PS4 edition you want.
- Download the game plus the latest title update before launching.
- On first boot, upload or download your PS4 save if you want to continue an old playthrough.
The PS4 disc release ships on two Blu-rays. Disc 1 handles installation, Disc 2 is the one the game checks when you play. People who keep Disc 1 in the drive and wonder why the game won’t start are hitting this exact issue.
Disc compatibility depends on your hardware:
- Launch PS5 (standard): built-in drive, plays the PS4 discs.
- PS5 Digital Edition (launch): no drive, digital only.
- PS5 Slim: the standard model has a detachable drive; the Digital version can add the separately sold Disc Drive.
- PS5 Pro: ships without a drive, so you need the add-on Disc Drive for physical copies.
Agent's note
PS4 games can run directly from USB extended storage on a PS5, unlike native PS5 games. If your internal SSD is tight, park RDR2 on an external drive and save the fast storage for current-gen titles. Loads take longer, but the game plays fine.
How Red Dead Redemption 2 runs on PS5

The PS5 runs RDR2 in PS4 Pro mode. That decides almost everything about how it looks and plays.
Frame rate: locked 30fps
Red Dead Redemption 2 has a 30fps cap on PlayStation, and the PS5 does not lift it. Backward compatibility can’t unlock a frame rate the game’s code forbids. Only a Rockstar patch could do that.
What the PS5 does improve is consistency. The PS4 and PS4 Pro versions dipped below 30fps in heavy scenes like Saint Denis streets and busy shootouts. On PS5, those dips are effectively gone, and the frame rate holds steady at its cap.
That matters more than it sounds. A stable 30fps with even frame pacing feels noticeably better than a 30fps target that wobbles.
Resolution: checkerboard 4K
On PS4 Pro, Rockstar used checkerboard rendering to produce a 4K output from a lower internal resolution. The PS5 inherits that exact image.
On a 4K TV it looks clean at normal viewing distance, with some softness in fine detail like grass and distant trees. On a 1080p display you get a supersampled image that looks sharper than the base PS4 version did.
HDR carries over too. You’ll find it in the game’s display settings, along with the in-game brightness and HDR sliders. Calibrate them once on PS5 instead of trusting your old PS4 values, since your TV settings may have changed since then.
Loading times
This is the biggest single upgrade. Booting into Story Mode, fast travelling and reloading after death are all far quicker on the PS5’s SSD than on any PS4’s hard drive.
If you played on base PS4, the difference is the first thing you will notice. The opening load into the world no longer gives you time to make a coffee.
What the PS5 version does not have
Because this is a PS4 game, several PS5 features are absent:
- No DualSense haptic feedback or adaptive triggers (you get standard rumble).
- No Activity Cards or PS5-native trophy features.
- No 60fps or performance mode.
- No ray tracing or current-gen visual upgrades.
- No 120Hz output or VRR benefit, since the game is capped at 30fps.
PS5 vs every other version
The PS5 delivers one of the best console experiences of RDR2, but it is not the best overall. Here is how it stacks up.
| Platform | Resolution | Frame rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 | 1080p | 30fps target, with dips | Slowest loading |
| PS4 Pro | Checkerboard 4K | 30fps target, with dips | Same image the PS5 uses |
| PS5 / PS5 Slim | Checkerboard 4K | Locked 30fps | Runs Pro build, fast loads |
| PS5 Pro | Checkerboard 4K | Locked 30fps | No dedicated Pro enhancement from Rockstar |
| Xbox One | 864p | 30fps target, with dips | Weakest version |
| Xbox One X | Native 4K | 30fps target | Sharpest original console image |
| Xbox Series X | Native 4K | Locked 30fps | Runs One X build, fast loads |
| Xbox Series S | Lower than One X | 30fps | Runs an Xbox One S-level build |
| PC | Up to 4K and beyond | Unlocked | Best version with the right hardware |
PS5 vs Xbox Series X
Both consoles run the last-gen game at 30fps, so the difference is image quality. The Xbox One X version rendered at native 4K, and the Series X inherits it.
Side by side, the Series X image is a little crisper, especially in foliage. The PS5’s checkerboard output is close enough that most players won’t notice outside of direct comparisons. Your friends list and your existing saves should decide this, not the pixel count.
PS5 vs PC
The PC version launched on November 5, 2019, and it is the definitive way to play when your hardware can handle it. You get uncapped frame rates, higher draw distances, better shadows and grass, ultrawide support and a photo mode with more range.
The catch is cost. Running RDR2 well at high settings still requires a capable graphics card, and the PC port demands far more tuning than the plug-and-play PS5 experience.
PS5 vs PS5 Pro
The PS5 Pro, released November 7, 2024, doesn’t transform RDR2. Rockstar hasn’t issued a Pro-specific patch, so the game still runs its PS4 Pro build at 30fps.
The Pro’s system-level option for enhancing PS4 game image quality is worth testing on your own TV. Just don’t buy a PS5 Pro expecting RDR2 at 60fps, because that isn’t going to happen without a Rockstar update.
The PS5 upgrade: status report

No official RDR2 PS5 upgrade exists. Searches for the “rdr2 ps5 upgrade” usually come from players who assumed it was a free next-gen patch like the ones other publishers released. It isn’t.
What we know
- CONFIRMED: Rockstar has released no native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S version of Red Dead Redemption 2.
- CONFIRMED: In July 2022, Rockstar said Red Dead Online would stop receiving major updates as it moved resources toward the next Grand Theft Auto.
- CONFIRMED: Rockstar ported the original Red Dead Redemption to PS4 and Switch in August 2023, and to PC in October 2024. It has shown willingness to revisit the series, just not RDR2 on current consoles.
What is rumored
- RUMOR, shelved upgrade: In 2022, GTAForums insider Tez2 said Rockstar had paused work on a current-gen RDR2 version to focus on GTA 6. Tez2 has a mostly solid record on Rockstar’s internal priorities, but this is still a single unverified source. Our call: plausible, and it matches the lack of an update since then.
- RUMOR, community speculation: A wave of “next-gen RDR2 is coming” posts appears every few months, often triggered by store database changes or ratings board entries for other Rockstar games. None of these has produced a confirmed RDR2 upgrade. Our call: treat any claim without a named, proven source as noise.
What it means
If you’re waiting for a PS5 version before buying, don’t. Rockstar’s development priorities are tied up in GTA 6, and nothing suggests a 60fps RDR2 patch is close.
If an upgrade ever lands, history suggests it would build on your existing PS4 purchase and saves. That’s speculation, so don’t base a buying decision on it.
Heads up
Unofficial 60fps patches circulate for modified (jailbroken) consoles. Using them means running unauthorized firmware, which can get your PSN account banned and can corrupt saves. Stay on the official build.
Saves, trophies and progress from PS4
Because the PS5 runs the PS4 game, your progress comes with you. There’s no conversion step and no separate PS5 save format.
Moving your PS4 save
You have three routes:
- PS Plus cloud storage: upload the save from your PS4, then download it on PS5 under Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, Saved Data (PS4), Cloud Storage.
- USB drive: copy the save from PS4 to a USB stick, then copy it onto the PS5 from the same Saved Data (PS4) menu.
- Data transfer: the PS5’s built-in transfer tool can move games and saves directly from a PS4 over your network.
If you left Arthur Morgan mid-chapter years ago, that save loads exactly where you stopped.
Trophies
RDR2 on PS5 uses the same trophy list as the PS4 version. Any trophies you’ve already earned, including a Platinum, stay unlocked. You won’t get a second Platinum by playing on PS5.
Cheats work the same way they do on PS4. You enter them through the Cheats section of the Settings menu after unlocking them. While cheats are active, saving and trophies are disabled, so switch them off before you rely on autosave.
Red Dead Online on PS5

Red Dead Online runs on PS5 through the same backward compatibility. PS4 and PS5 players share the same lobbies, since they’re technically running the same game.
You need a PlayStation Plus subscription for online play. There’s no crossplay with Xbox or PC, and no cross-progression between platforms.
Rockstar also sold Red Dead Online as a standalone release starting December 1, 2020, separate from the story mode. If you own the full RDR2, it’s already included.
Is Red Dead Online still worth playing?
It depends on what you want from it. The roles system (Bounty Hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner and Naturalist) is all still there, along with the full world.
What you won’t get is meaningful new content. Since the 2022 announcement, updates have been limited to rotating bonuses and small events. Lobbies are quieter than at peak, but it’s still a decent sandbox for a few friends.
Standard vs Ultimate Edition on PS5
The PlayStation Store generally offers two editions, both PS4 versions that run on PS5.
| Edition | What you get |
|---|---|
| Standard | Full story mode and Red Dead Online |
| Ultimate | Standard game, plus story bonuses (a bank robbery mission, a gang hideout, a horse, weapons and outfits) and Red Dead Online extras |
Most players should buy the Standard Edition. The Ultimate content is cosmetic and front-loaded, and some of it can make the early game easier than Rockstar intended.
Pricing moves constantly. RDR2 is one of the most frequently discounted games on the PlayStation Store, so if you’re not in a hurry, wait for a sale.
Agent's note
Check whether you already own the PS4 version before buying again. Many players bought it on PS4 years ago and forgot. It will already be in your Game Library on PS5 under the same PSN account.
Storage: plan before you install
RDR2 is a large install. The PS4 version, with all its updates, needs well over 100GB, which is a significant chunk of a launch PS5’s 825GB SSD.
That puts it in direct competition with whatever you’re keeping space for next. If you’re planning to prepare for GTA 6, it’s worth deciding now whether RDR2 lives on your internal SSD or on USB extended storage.
Rockstar hasn’t confirmed a GTA 6 install size yet, so our breakdown of the GTA 6 file size only covers estimates and what has actually been said. Moving RDR2 to an external drive is a simple way to free space ahead of any GTA 6 preload window.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 worth playing on PS5?
Yes. Even at 30fps, this is still one of the best open-world games ever made, and the PS5 is the best PlayStation hardware to play it on.
The story, centered on Arthur Morgan and the decline of the Van der Linde gang in 1899, holds up completely. The world is dense enough that our breakdown of the RDR2 map, region by region, still surprises veteran players.
Who should play it on PS5:
- New players with only a PlayStation: buy it. The 30fps cap is the only real compromise.
- PS4 owners who never finished it: pick up your old save and continue. Faster loads alone make the experience smoother.
- Players who need 60fps: for RDR2, the PC version is your only official option.
- Xbox Series X owners deciding between platforms: the Series X image is slightly sharper, but not enough to justify buying a second console.
The 30fps cap matters most during horseback riding and fast camera movement. Rockstar designed RDR2’s weighty animation around 30fps on consoles, so it feels intentional more than broken. Most players stop noticing after the first hour.
More Rockstar on PS5
If RDR2 gets its hooks into you, the rest of the Rockstar catalog on PlayStation is easy to work through:
- Red Dead Redemption (2010): the original, available on PS4 since August 2023 and playable on PS5. It picks up years after RDR2’s epilogue and closes out John Marston’s story.
- GTA 5: has a native PS5 version, unlike RDR2, with performance and fidelity modes.
- GTA 6: confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our guide on GTA 6 pre-order timing tracks when and how orders open.
As for the next Western, our guide on Red Dead Redemption 3 sorts confirmed facts from the guesswork. Short version: Rockstar has announced nothing.
FAQ
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5?
Yes, through backward compatibility. You play the PS4 version, which runs on every PS5 model including the Digital Edition, Slim and Pro. There is no native PS5 version.
Does RDR2 run at 60fps on PS5?
No. The game is capped at 30fps on PlayStation, and backward compatibility can’t remove that cap. The PS5 holds 30fps much more consistently than the PS4 and PS4 Pro did.
Is there a free PS5 upgrade for Red Dead Redemption 2?
No. Rockstar has never released a PS5 upgrade, free or paid. A GTAForums insider with a solid record reported in 2022 that a current-gen version had been shelved, and nothing official has appeared since.
What resolution does RDR2 run at on PS5?
It uses the PS4 Pro’s checkerboard 4K output. Xbox Series X runs the Xbox One X version at native 4K, so its image is slightly sharper.
Can I transfer my PS4 RDR2 save to PS5?
Yes. Use PS Plus cloud storage, a USB drive or the PS5’s data transfer tool. The save format is identical because it’s the same game.
Do I need PS Plus to play RDR2 on PS5?
Only for Red Dead Online. Story mode works offline without a subscription.
Will the PS4 disc work on PS5?
Yes, on any PS5 with a disc drive. Install from Disc 1, then keep Disc 2 in the drive to play. The Digital Edition and PS5 Pro need the separately sold Disc Drive to use physical copies.
Is the PS5 Pro better for Red Dead Redemption 2?
Only marginally. There’s no Pro-specific patch from Rockstar, so the game still runs at 30fps with the same core image. Don’t upgrade your console just for RDR2.
