Red Dead Redemption 2 map with every region
The map of Red Dead Redemption 2 covers five states split into 15 named regions, plus the island of Guarma you only visit in Chapter 5. Story mode and Red Dead Online use the same landmass, so every town, fence and legendary animal spot below applies to both. Here is how the map is laid out, how to read it, and where the things worth finding actually sit.
The five states on the RDR2 map
The landmass runs from frozen peaks in the north to desert in the south-west. West is a river border with an unreachable Mexico. East is the Lannahechee River and the sea.

Guarma is a separate map loaded during Chapter 5. You cannot ride back there afterwards without glitches.
Ambarino is where the game opens. Colter is the snowed-in mining town from the prologue. Once you reach Horseshoe Overlook in Chapter 2, the whole of New Hanover and Lemoyne opens up, and that is where most of the story plays out.
Where Arthur can and cannot go
As “arthur morgan“, two chunks of the map are off limits. Blackwater and the Great Plains carry a standing bounty after the ferry job, so lawmen attack on sight. New Austin is worse. Cross the Upper Montana River as Arthur and an unseen sniper kills you within seconds.
Everything south and west of Blackwater opens properly in the epilogue, when you play as John. That is when Armadillo, Tumbleweed and the Rio Bravo treasure spots become practical.
Heads up
Mexico shows on the map across the San Luis River but has no content. Any “secret Mexico route” you see online is a collision glitch, and saving in an out-of-bounds area can corrupt that slot. Stay on the proper map.
How to read the in-game map
Open the pause menu and pick Map. On PC, the M key goes straight there. On console, tap down on the D-pad to cycle the minimap between regular, expanded, compass and off.
Markers you will see constantly:
- Yellow icons: active story missions. Letters mark story, question marks mark Stranger missions.
- White icons: shops, saloons, doctors, gunsmiths, stables, post offices and trains.
- Fence icon: a cross-hatched symbol. Fences sit at Emerald Ranch, Rhodes, Saint Denis and Van Horn, with Tumbleweed added in the epilogue.
- Red skull: an active bounty on you in that region.
- Hideout shield: a gang hideout you have discovered. Six Point Cabin, Shady Belle, Beaver Hollow and Hanging Dog Ranch are the four the story makes you clear, with Fort Mercer only reachable in the epilogue.
You can place one custom waypoint at a time. Set it, and the route draws as a red line on the minimap. Cinematic camera then rides the horse along it automatically.
Agent's note
The map legend hides animal icons until you study a species. Study it once with the binoculars, and every later sighting drops a grey animal marker you can filter in the compendium. This is the fastest way to build a personal hunting map without a wiki.
Fast travel on the RDR2 map
There is no free teleport. You have three options: trains, stagecoaches, and the camp map. Trains and coaches cost a few dollars per hop and leave from any station with a schedule board. The camp map is one-way, from camp to any discovered town, and needs a ledger upgrade.
Quick steps: unlock camp fast travel
- Reach Chapter 2 and open the ledger beside Dutch’s tent.
- Buy the First Things First upgrade for Dutch’s lodgings, $220.
- Buy the Next in Line upgrade for Arthur’s lodgings, $325.
- Walk to the map now hanging on Arthur’s wagon and pick a destination.
The camp map follows you through every camp move and still works for John at Beecher’s Hope.
Treasure maps and collectibles
Four treasure hunts sit on the map, and all of them pay in gold bars worth $500 each at any fence.

Beyond treasure, the full map holds 30 dinosaur bones, 20 dreamcatchers, 10 rock carvings and 144 cigarette cards across 12 sets. None of them show as icons until you accept the matching Stranger task, which is why interactive maps exist in the first place.
Legendary animals, fish and plants
Sixteen legendary animals live in story mode. Each has a fixed territory that appears as a crossed-paw icon once you have been close enough to trigger it. The Bharati Grizzly sits in Grizzlies East, the Bullgator in Bayou Nwa, the White Bison on Lake Isabella, the Cougar at Gaptooth Ridge, and the Panther in Lemoyne, which only spawns at Master Hunter rank 9.
Thirteen legendary fish are catchable, plus a Channel Catfish that is not. Jeremy Gill at Flat Iron Lake hands you the fish map during “A Fisher of Fish”. Birds and small game never get map markers, so hunt them by habitat: herons and egrets in the marsh, eagles around Ambarino cliffs.
Plants and herbs show on no official map either. Red Dead Online adds the Harrietum Officinalis, a flower tied to Harriet’s naturalist role. Community maps track it along with every other pickup.
Interactive maps worth using
The in-game map cannot filter by item. Interactive maps can. MapGenie’s RDR2 map runs in a browser and as a free app on Google Play and the App Store, with toggles to show or hide each category and a progress tracker you can reset. Translations for it come through Crowdin, so the Spanish “mapa de Red Dead Redemption 2” version is maintained by volunteers. A high-resolution flat image of the full map also circulates on Reddit, made from stitched in-game screenshots. Print that one if you want a wall copy. Use the interactive one if you want to clear collectibles.
The RDO map and Daily Challenges
Red Dead Online drops you on the same map with no locked states. Unlike story mode, where New Austin stays locked until the epilogue, Online lets you ride there from your first session. Role-specific icons replace some story markers: Cripps’ camp, the moonshine shack, bounty boards in Blackwater, Rhodes, Saint Denis and Tumbleweed, and Harriet’s naturalist tent at Strawberry.
Daily Challenges reset once a day and pull directly from the map. A typical set asks you to loot an item at a specific hideout, catch a named fish, or sell a pelt to the butcher in a named town. Interactive maps let you create a filtered view of just the locations today’s challenges need, which saves real riding time. General challenges pay gold nuggets, and a seven-day streak multiplies that.
For scale, the “gta 6 map” of Leonida is the only Rockstar world likely to exceed this one, and any “red dead redemption 3” talk about a bigger West remains unconfirmed.
FAQ
Is the RDR2 map bigger than GTA 5’s?
Rockstar has never published a square-mile figure for either. Side-by-side community measurements put RDR2 ahead, and riding end to end on horseback takes noticeably longer than driving across Los Santos.
Can I see the whole map before exploring it?
Yes. The full landmass is drawn from the start. Only shop icons, hideouts and collectible markers fill in as you discover them.
Does the map change between chapters?
The land stays the same. Camp locations move, a few story events alter buildings, and the epilogue opens New Austin. Guarma appears only during Chapter 5.
Which version has the best map experience?
PC, for mouse-driven waypoints and ultrawide support. The content is identical on PS4, Xbox One and the backward-compatible PS5 and Xbox Series versions.
