GTA 6 review embargo: when the first reviews go live

Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed for 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar has said nothing about when critics get to publish. This briefing separates what is officially on record from what the community is guessing, lays out how Rockstar handled review timing on its last six major launches, and tells you what to watch when GTA 6 reviews finally land.

Last checked: ahead of the 19 November 2026 launch, against Rockstar Newswire, Take-Two investor materials and the PlayStation and Xbox stores. This page is updated as review and launch details land.

What we know

I will keep this section to things Rockstar, Take-Two or an official store has actually said. Everything else lives further down under its own label.

The date and the platforms

Rockstar announced GTA 6 with a first trailer in December 2023 and a loose “2025” window. In May 2025 the studio moved the game to 26 May 2026, then released the second trailer, the first batch of screenshots and the character roster a few days later. In November 2025 Rockstar moved the date a second time, to 19 November 2026, saying the extra months would let the team finish the game with the polish players expect. Take-Two has repeated that date in its investor communications since.

The platforms have never changed. GTA 6 is a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release. A PC version has not been announced, and I will come back to what Rockstar’s own history says about that in the rumor section.

The game itself

Official material confirms two leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and a fictional version of Florida called Leonida, with Vice City as its main city. Rockstar’s website names supporting characters including Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest and Raul Bautista. That is the full extent of the official story disclosure. No mission list, no length estimate, no feature breakdown.

That matters for reviews because the critics will be the first people allowed to describe the structure of the game in detail. If Rockstar follows its usual approach, reviewers will be told which story beats are off-limits, and most outlets will say so in their text.

What Rockstar has said about reviews

Nothing. Rockstar does not publish review embargo dates in advance and never has. The embargo date for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 became public knowledge only when outlets started telling their audiences “our review goes live at this time.” I expect the same here, so the first solid signal will come from reviewers rather than from Rockstar.

Here is the current state of every review-relevant fact in one place.

Everything in this section is history. It is not a prediction, and I want to be clear about that because the community has a habit of turning “Rockstar did this last time” into “Rockstar will do this.” The pattern is useful context. It is not information about GTA 6.

How the last six launches went

Game Launch When reviews went live Metacritic (launch platforms)
Grand Theft Auto IV 29 April 2008 In the days before launch 98
Red Dead Redemption 18 May 2010 Before launch 95
L.A. Noire 17 May 2011 Day before launch 89
Max Payne 3 15 May 2012 Day before launch High 80s
Grand Theft Auto V 17 September 2013 16 September 2013, day before launch 97
Red Dead Redemption 2 26 October 2018 25 October 2018, day before launch 97

The two launches that matter most for comparison are GTA V and RDR2, because they are the two most recent brand-new Rockstar games and the two with the largest launch footprints. Both followed the same shape. Code went to outlets in advance, reviews were held until the day before release, and the embargo lifted in the morning US time so that the first wave of GTA 6-style coverage hit while most of the world was awake.

In both cases, reviewers publicly described the window as tight for a game of that scale. Several outlets added notes that they had not seen every corner of the map or every optional activity before publishing. That is normal for a hundred-hour open world and it is worth remembering when the first GTA 6 scores appear.

The exception that proves the rule

The Grand Theft Auto Trilogy: The Definitive Edition launched on 11 November 2021 with no advance review copies. Reviews arrived after launch, the scores were poor across every platform with the Switch version faring worst, and Rockstar issued a public apology and a patch roadmap within weeks. The absence of pre-launch reviews became part of the story.

I raise this because it shows the two modes Rockstar operates in. For flagship releases it has run a conventional embargo that lifts the day before launch. For ports and remasters it has often skipped advance code entirely. GTA 6 is the biggest flagship the company has ever shipped, so the historical precedent points one way, but precedent is all it is.

Online was never part of the launch reviews

This is the part most fans forget. GTA V reviewed as a single-player game. Grand Theft Auto Online did not switch on until 1 October 2013, two weeks after the campaign shipped, and its rocky first week was covered as a separate story. Red Dead Online followed the same model, opening as a beta on 27 November 2018, roughly a month after the main game.

Rockstar has not announced anything about an online component for GTA 6, and I am not going to speculate on timing. The historical point stands on its own: whatever GTA 6 reviews say on day one, they will almost certainly be describing the campaign, because that is what reviewers will have been able to play.

Agent's note

On review day, check whether each outlet says it finished the story. In 2013 and 2018 several big reviews quietly admitted they had not. A 10 out of 10 from a reviewer who saw 60 percent of the game is a different data point from a 10 out of 10 from one who rolled credits.

Every item below carries a source grade and my credibility call. None of it is confirmed. If something here moves to the confirmed list, I will move it.

“Reviews will drop the day before launch”

Source: community reasoning on the GTA 6 subreddit and across social media, extrapolated from the GTA V and RDR2 pattern.

Credibility: this is a pattern, not a leak. Nobody with a track record has claimed to know the embargo date, and Rockstar has not said a word. The historical precedent is real, but I have watched publishers change embargo timing between consecutive releases plenty of times. Treat 18 November 2026 as the community’s working assumption and nothing more. Status: RUMOR, community grade.

“Reviewers will be flown to Rockstar offices”

Source: community chatter, again based on history. For GTA V, a portion of the press reviewed on site under supervision, and that detail has been repeated for years.

Credibility: Rockstar did use controlled review sessions for some outlets in the past, and major publishers still do this for high-security launches. Whether it applies to GTA 6 is unknown. Status: RUMOR, community grade, with real historical precedent.

“GTA 6 will cost more than $70”

Source: multiple industry analysts, quoted widely in business press through 2025 and 2026, have speculated that Take-Two could push the price above the current standard for a full-price console game. Take-Two’s CEO Strauss Zelnick has repeatedly declined to confirm a price when asked on earnings calls and in interviews.

Credibility: these are analysts forecasting, not insiders leaking. I am not going to print their figures as if they mean anything, because they do not. Take-Two has said only that it wants to deliver value that exceeds the price. Status: RUMOR, analyst speculation grade. Our “gta 6 price” article tracks every official statement and every store listing as they appear.

“An online mode launches alongside the campaign”

Source: community speculation, plus the reasonable observation that GTA Online is one of the most profitable products in entertainment and Take-Two will want a successor.

Credibility: Rockstar has never shown a frame of multiplayer for GTA 6 and has not confirmed that an online mode exists, let alone when it arrives. The 2013 and 2018 precedent points to a staggered launch, which would mean reviews cannot cover it. Status: Not announced.

“A PC version is coming within a year”

Source: community expectation based on Rockstar’s history.

Credibility: the history is strong. Every major Rockstar release since GTA IV has reached PC later than consoles, and the gaps are documented.

Game Console launch PC launch Gap
Grand Theft Auto IV 29 April 2008 2 December 2008 About 7 months
Max Payne 3 15 May 2012 1 June 2012 About 2 weeks
Grand Theft Auto V 17 September 2013 14 April 2015 About 19 months
Red Dead Redemption 2 26 October 2018 5 November 2019 About 12 months

Take-Two has said in investor settings that it tends to bring its titles to additional platforms over time, which is a general statement about strategy rather than a GTA 6 announcement. Status: Not announced. The history is real, the timing for GTA 6 is unknown, and PC reviews will not exist on 19 November 2026 under any scenario Rockstar has described.

Leaks and what to do with them

The biggest GTA leak on record happened in September 2022, when an intruder obtained dozens of clips of an early development build and posted them publicly. Rockstar confirmed the breach in a statement, said the footage was from early development, and said work would continue as planned. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, a proven reporter on Rockstar’s internal culture and development, covered the aftermath. A UK court later dealt with the person responsible.

I am not going to describe that footage beyond what Rockstar itself confirmed, and I will not point anyone toward it. For review purposes it is irrelevant anyway. A 2022 development build tells you nothing about how a 2026 release performs or how critics will score it.

Since then there has been a steady stream of anonymous accounts claiming knowledge of map size, mission counts, review timing and more. Almost none of them have a track record on Rockstar information. The one credible community effort I would point to is the fan “gta 6 mapping” project, which rebuilds Leonida from trailer frames and official screenshots rather than from anything stolen. That is the kind of open, checkable work I trust. Anonymous claims about the embargo are not.

Heads up

Anything described as a GTA 6 review build, leaked copy or early-access file is malware bait or a scam. There is no legitimate way to play before Rockstar’s unlock, and Rockstar’s account bans for tampering have historically been permanent.

What it means

This is my read on how the review period is likely to feel for a reader, grounded in what is confirmed and what the history shows. Where I lean on history I will say so.

Reviews will probably arrive after your download finishes

Nothing about GTA 6 preload timing has been announced, so I will keep this general. For recent PS5 and Xbox Series releases, preloads typically open in the days before launch, and Rockstar’s two previous flagships lifted their embargoes the day before release. If both patterns held, most people who pre-order would have the game sitting on their console before the first review goes live.

That changes the role of reviews. For a lot of players they stop being a purchase decision and become a spoiler minefield. Our “gta 6 preload” piece tracks when the download opens, “gta 6 file size” covers how much space to clear, and “gta 6 release time” lists unlock times by region. If you are deciding whether to buy, pre-order details are in “gta 6 pre order” once the stores list them.

The scores will be about the campaign

Every GTA 6 review published on day one will reflect what a critic could play in a limited window with a controlled build. Going on history, that means single-player, no public online, and possibly not the full story. The Metacritic and OpenCritic averages that form within hours will reflect that scope.

I would also expect Rockstar to restrict story discussion in its review guidelines, as it did for RDR2. Most outlets will tell you where their review stops in terms of spoilers. Read that line before you read anything else.

Platform performance questions will not be fully answered

Rockstar has not published resolution, frame-rate or PS5 Pro details for GTA 6. Community debate about whether the game runs at 60 frames per second on base consoles has run for over a year without a single official statement either way. Reviewers will report what they see, but review code sometimes differs from the launch patch, and most outlets review on one platform. Technical analysis channels that break down each version frame by frame usually publish in the days after launch, so if you care about the Series S or PS5 Pro picture, wait for those.

Critics versus critics will be louder than critics versus fans

For a game this large, the first interesting argument is usually between reviewers. GTA V and RDR2 both drew essays about Rockstar’s mission design, the rigidity of its scripting and its treatment of violence, alongside the 10 out of 10s. Those critiques did not dent the aggregate scores, but they shaped the conversation for years. I expect GTA 6 to produce the same split, and the two-protagonist structure gives critics an obvious lens for comparing how Jason and Lucia are written.

The critics-versus-fans fight will follow within hours. Any review below a 9 will trend. User scores on Metacritic will be bombed from both directions, as they were for RDR2 within its first day. None of that is a signal about the game. It is a signal about the internet.

Take-Two’s quarter rides on launch week, not on review scores

Take-Two’s stock moved on both GTA 6 delay announcements, and the company has described the game as the most anticipated release in entertainment history. That framing has led some commentators to describe GTA 6 as life support for a console industry that has had a rough couple of years. I think that is overstated, but the business reality is that Take-Two’s fiscal year is built around this launch, and its next earnings call will be the first official readout on sales.

Review scores will matter at the margin. GTA V sold a billion dollars in three days on the strength of a decade of anticipation, and reviews were a footnote to that. Rockstar’s release schedule depends on the game landing on 19 November, which is why we track every signal in “gta 6 delay” separately from the review question.

How to follow GTA 6 reviews without being spoiled

A practical angle most review-day coverage skips. The flood when the embargo lifts will be enormous, and the useful information is buried in it.

Quick steps: follow review day cleanly

  1. Mute “GTA 6”, “GTA VI”, “Jason”, “Lucia” and “Leonida” on social platforms the week of launch.
  2. Pick two or three outlets whose Rockstar reviews you trust from 2013 and 2018, and read only those.
  3. Check each review’s spoiler note and whether the reviewer finished the campaign.
  4. Ignore aggregate scores until at least a dozen reviews are counted.
  5. Wait for frame-by-frame technical breakdowns before judging platform performance.

What a review can and cannot tell you on day one

Question Can a launch review answer it? Why
How the story opens and how the two leads play Yes, within spoiler limits Reviewers will have played the campaign
How long the main story is Partly Depends on whether the reviewer finished
Map size and density Partly Few will have explored all of Leonida
Online mode quality No Not announced; historically launched separately
Day-one patch performance Partly Review code may differ from launch build
PS5 Pro and Series S specifics Rarely Most outlets review on one platform
Price-to-value Only once price is announced Price is not announced

Reading an aggregate properly

Metacritic weights outlets, OpenCritic does not, and both exclude reviews that publish without a score. On a launch of this scale, the first 20 reviews will arrive within an hour of the embargo and the average will swing by several points before it settles. Rockstar’s two previous flagships both settled at 97 on their launch platforms. If GTA 6 settles anywhere in the mid 90s, that is a result consistent with the company’s history. If it lands lower, read the text of the lower-scoring reviews before you decide what it means, because for Rockstar games the dissents have usually been about design philosophy rather than bugs.

Why the embargo matters more for GTA 6 than for other games

Review embargoes exist so that every outlet publishes at once and nobody gets scooped. For most games the timing is a minor detail. For GTA 6 three things make it unusually consequential.

First, the scale of preloading. If millions of copies are sitting on hard drives before any critic has spoken, the reviews stop functioning as consumer advice for that group and become part of the launch event itself.

Second, the information vacuum. Rockstar has shown two trailers and a page of character bios across three years. Critics will be the first people permitted to describe the game’s structure, mission variety and pacing at any length. The embargo lift will reveal more about GTA 6 in one morning than Rockstar has in its entire marketing campaign so far.

Third, the stakes for the publisher. Take-Two has delayed twice, which the company framed as polish time. A review wave that confirms the polish will validate those delays in a way no earnings call can. A wave that reports performance problems would be the first real crack in the narrative. That is why I will be watching the technical paragraphs in each review more closely than the scores.

What happens next

The sequence I am tracking, in the order it is likely to unfold based on how previous Rockstar and platform-holder launches have worked:

  1. Pre-orders open on the PlayStation and Xbox stores, which would also be the first official price disclosure. Not announced.
  2. Rockstar publishes a launch-window Newswire post covering editions and any bonuses. Not announced.
  3. Preload opens on both consoles. Not announced.
  4. Outlets announce their review publication times, which is the first public signal of the embargo. Not announced.
  5. Reviews go live. Not announced.
  6. The game unlocks on 19 November 2026 by region. CONFIRMED date, unlock times not announced.
  7. Technical breakdowns and finished-the-campaign follow-up reviews arrive in the days after.
  8. Take-Two reports launch results in its next scheduled earnings release.

Each of those steps will update this page when it happens. Until Rockstar or an outlet states an embargo time, the honest answer to “when do GTA 6 reviews go live” is that nobody outside Rockstar knows, and anyone claiming otherwise should be asked for a track record.

FAQ

When do GTA 6 reviews come out?

Not announced. Rockstar has never published an embargo date in advance. For GTA V in 2013 and Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018 reviews went live the morning before launch, but that is history, not a confirmed plan for 2026.

Will reviews cover GTA 6 Online?

Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6, so no. Historically, GTA Online launched two weeks after GTA V and Red Dead Online about a month after RDR2, and neither was part of the launch reviews.

Can I read GTA 6 reviews before my preload finishes?

Preload timing has not been announced. If Rockstar follows its past embargo pattern and the platforms follow their usual preload windows, most pre-order customers would have the game downloaded before reviews publish.

Are there legitimate early reviews or leaked review scores?

No. Any score circulating before the embargo lifts is fabricated, and any file claiming to be a review build is a scam or malware. The only genuine early information will come from outlets announcing their publication time.

Will there be PC reviews on 19 November 2026?

No. GTA 6 is confirmed only for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version is not announced. Rockstar’s PC versions have historically arrived months to more than a year after console launch.

How reliable are the leakers posting GTA 6 review details?

Almost none of the anonymous accounts claiming embargo knowledge have any record on Rockstar information. Treat their claims as speculation. Reporting from established journalists such as Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier is a different tier, and even he has not reported an embargo date.

Marcus Reed

Marcus Reed runs the GTA 6 desk at RockstarSpy. His beat is everything attached to the next game: release windows, launch details, official trailers, platform plans and the steady drip of leaks that fills the gap between Rockstar announcements. He treats every claim as a question of sourcing first. A Take-Two earnings call or a Rockstar Newswire post gets reported as fact. A datamine or a tipster with a mixed record gets labeled as such. When a story shifts, he updates the piece and says what changed rather than quietly rewriting it. Readers should always be able to tell what is confirmed and what is still talk.
