Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a native PS4 game. Rockstar launched it on PlayStation 4 on October 26, 2018, and it is still sold on the PlayStation Store as a PS4 title. That same PS4 version is also what you play on a PS5, because Rockstar never released a native PS5 build. This briefing covers what the PS4 version includes, how it runs on each console, which edition to buy, and whether it is still worth your time and money.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4? The short answer
Yes. PS4 was one of the two launch platforms, alongside Xbox One. PC followed on November 5, 2019, more than a year later. The PS4 release came on two Blu-ray discs: a data disc you install first, then a play disc that stays in the tray.
Digitally, the game is available on the PlayStation Store under its PS4 listing. Buy it there and it downloads to a PS4 or a PS5. Red Dead Online, the multiplayer side of the game, is included with every copy of the full game.
One thing changes the picture for some buyers. There is no PS5-native version, no 60fps patch and no paid PS5 upgrade. On PS5 you are running the PS4 Pro version of the game. Our article on Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS5 covers that comparison in detail. The short version: it looks good and loads faster, but the 30fps cap stays.
What the PS4 game actually is
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a prequel to the 2010 original. The year is 1899. The frontier is closing, federal law and Pinkerton agents are pushing west, and outlaw gangs are running out of room.
You play as Arthur Morgan, the senior enforcer of the Van der Linde gang. Roger Clark plays Arthur with a mix of menace and weariness that carries the whole game. If you want his full backstory, our Arthur Morgan profile covers his history, personality and story arc without spoiling more than you choose to read.
The Van der Linde gang
The gang is led by Dutch van der Linde, voiced by Benjamin Byron Davis. Dutch is a charismatic talker who sells his followers a vision of freedom. The story opens with that vision already failing. A botched robbery in the town of Blackwater forces the gang to flee into snowbound mountains, broke and hunted.
The camp is the emotional engine of the game. You can join conversations, take part in chores, share meals and help members in trouble. Some of the familiar faces from the 2010 game appear as younger versions of themselves. John Marston (Rob Wiethoff), Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella and Abigail all have significant roles.
Loyalty is the central theme. Over six chapters and a two-part epilogue, the gang starts to come apart. You watch it happen from Arthur’s point of view, and the game does not let you look away from the consequences.
The world you explore
The map covers five fictional states: Ambarino, New Hanover, Lemoyne, West Elizabeth and New Austin. Towns range from muddy Valentine to the industrial city of Saint Denis, a stand-in for New Orleans. Our Red Dead Redemption 2 map breakdown walks through every region if you want to plan routes or hunting trips.
Rockstar said the world holds more than 200 animal species. Hunting matters because pelts and other materials feed the crafting system and the camp’s supplies. Your horse is a real companion: bonding levels rise with care and riding time, and losing a well-bonded horse hurts.
Editions on PS4: what you get with each

Rockstar sold four retail products at launch. Only three actually contained the game. The table below lists the launch prices in US dollars.
| Edition | Launch price (USD) | Contains the game | Key extras |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $59.99 | Yes | Base game plus Red Dead Online access |
| Special Edition | $79.99 | Yes | Story mode extras: Bank Robbery Mission and Gang Hideout, Dappled Black Thoroughbred horse, Gunslinger’s Treasure Map, Nuevo Paraíso Gunslinger Outfit, cash bonus and discounts |
| Ultimate Edition | $99.99 | Yes | Everything in Special, plus Red Dead Online bonuses such as the War Horse and Outlaw Survival Kit; physical copies added a steelbook and map |
| Collector’s Box | $99.99 | No | Physical memorabilia only, no copy of the game |
Which edition should you pick?
Buy the Standard Edition. The story mode bonuses in the premium editions are front-loaded perks. The extra horse and weapons make the first few chapters easier, but you overtake their value within a few hours of normal play. The bonus mission and hideout are fine, though they are not essential story content.
The Ultimate Edition makes sense only if you plan to put real hours into Red Dead Online. Its online items save you some early grinding. They do not change how the game plays long term.
Avoid buying the Collector’s Box by mistake on a resale site. It is a box of memorabilia with no game inside.
Agent's note
Used physical copies of the PS4 version need both discs. Check that the listing includes Disc 1 (data) and Disc 2 (play) before you buy, because a single-disc listing usually means half the game is missing.
Available on PlayStation Store: buying and installing
The digital route is simplest. The PS Store listing is marked as a PS4 game. It installs on a PS4 or a PS5 from the same purchase, so you never need to buy it twice when you upgrade consoles.
You can pay with a credit card, PayPal where supported, or PlayStation Store gift cards loaded into your PSN wallet. Rockstar runs regular discounts on RDR2, often during the big seasonal PlayStation Store sales. If you are not in a hurry, wait for one. Paying full launch price in the current market is unnecessary.
Quick steps: install RDR2 on PS4 from disc
- Insert Disc 1, labeled as the data disc, and let the installation run.
- Swap to Disc 2, the play disc, when the console prompts you.
- Let the latest title update download before you start playing.
- Keep Disc 2 in the tray every time you play.
Quick steps: buy and download from the PlayStation Store
- Open the PlayStation Store and search for Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Select the edition you want and check the PS4 badge on the listing.
- Complete the purchase with your card, PayPal or wallet funds.
- Start the download and keep the console online until the update finishes.
Storage is the real limit on older hardware. The full install plus updates is well over 100GB. On a launch-model 500GB PS4, that can be a big share of your drive. Clear space before you start, or use an external USB drive for other games.
How RDR2 runs on PS4, PS4 Pro and PS5

Every console version of RDR2 targets 30 frames per second. Resolution is where the hardware tiers separate. Digital Foundry’s technical analysis at launch established the numbers below, and they have not changed since, because Rockstar never patched the console versions for higher performance.
| Console | Resolution | Frame rate | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 (base and Slim) | Native 1080p | 30fps target, occasional dips | Longest load times |
| PS4 Pro | 4K via checkerboard rendering | 30fps target | Sharper image than base PS4 |
| PS5 (backward compatibility) | Runs the PS4 Pro version | 30fps cap | Much faster loading and steadier frame pacing |
| Xbox One (for comparison) | 864p | 30fps target | Weakest console version |
| Xbox One X (for comparison) | Native 4K | 30fps target | Sharpest last-gen image |
A few practical takeaways for PS4 owners:
- Base PS4 still holds up. The art direction, lighting and animation carry the presentation. Expect a softer image and long initial loads, not a broken experience.
- PS4 Pro is the best PlayStation 4 way to play. The checkerboarded image is noticeably cleaner on a 4K TV.
- PS5 is the best PlayStation option overall. You get the Pro version’s image quality, faster loading and a steadier 30fps. You do not get 60fps.
Will the PS4 version work on PS5?
Yes. The PS4 disc works in any PS5 with a disc drive, including the standard models and PS5 Pro units with an attached disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition without a drive needs a digital copy.
Your PS4 saves carry over because you are playing the same software. Upload them to PlayStation Plus cloud storage, or copy them to a USB drive, then download them on the PS5. Red Dead Online progress is tied to your PSN account and the PlayStation version of the game, so it comes with you automatically.
Heads up
There is no cross-progression between PlayStation and PC or Xbox. A story save or Red Dead Online character on PS4 stays on PlayStation hardware.
Red Dead Online on PS4
Red Dead Online launched in beta on November 27, 2018, about a month after the main game. It went through years of updates, then became available as a standalone purchase in December 2020, on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The full game still includes it at no extra cost.
What you need to play
On PS4, online play requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription. The cheapest tier, Essential, is enough. Without it you can still play the full story offline.
An ever-evolving online world
Red Dead Online’s biggest addition was Frontier Pursuits, a set of career roles that give you a reason to log in beyond shootouts:
- Bounty Hunter: track down wanted targets, dead or alive.
- Trader: run a hunting and supply business out of your camp.
- Collector: find hidden items across the map and sell sets to Madam Nazar.
- Moonshiner: brew and sell illegal liquor from a hidden shack.
- Naturalist: study and sample wildlife, or hunt legendary animals for profit.
The Blood Money update in July 2021 added Capitale, a new currency, and crime-focused Opportunities.
Where Red Dead Online stands now
In July 2022, Rockstar announced it was moving development resources away from major Red Dead Online updates to focus on its next GTA project. Smaller content drops and event rotations continued after that. The servers remain live on PS4, and the community is active, especially around weekly bonuses and monthly events.
Set your expectations accordingly. Red Dead Online is a mature mode with plenty to do, not a game receiving expansions on a regular cycle. Players who want a living online world with constant big drops will find GTA Online the more active Rockstar option.
PS4 timed exclusive content
At launch, Rockstar and Sony announced that PS4 players would get select Red Dead Online content first, including missions, horses, weapons and outfits, on a timed exclusive basis. That window has long since expired. Today the content is no longer a reason to pick PS4 over other platforms.
Ratings and reviews

Critics treated RDR2 as a landmark. The PS4 version holds a Metascore of 97 on Metacritic, which puts it among the highest-rated games ever released on the console.
| Rating or award | Result |
|---|---|
| Metacritic (PS4) | 97 Metascore |
| ESRB | M for Mature (17+) |
| PEGI | 18 |
| The Game Awards 2018 | Won Best Narrative, Best Score/Music, Best Audio Design and Best Performance (Roger Clark) |
| The Game Awards 2018, Game of the Year | Nominated, lost to God of War |
Sales match the reviews. Take-Two has reported more than 65 million copies sold across all platforms in its earnings updates. That makes RDR2 one of the best-selling games of all time and Rockstar’s second-biggest seller behind GTA V.
ESRB rating details
The ESRB rated the game M for Mature. The listed content descriptors are Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Red Dead Online also carries interactive elements for in-game purchases and user interaction.
If you are buying for someone else, take the rating seriously. The violence is graphic and frequent, and the tone is heavy. This is a game for adults.
What reviewers praised and criticized
The praise focused on the writing, the performances, the world simulation and the level of detail. People in towns remember you. Weather changes how horses and clothes behave. Guns need cleaning. Food spoils.
The criticism focused on the same features from the other direction. Arthur moves deliberately. Looting plays a full animation every time. Missions are tightly scripted, and straying from the plan often ends in failure. Some players love the slow pace, and others find it tedious. Know which group you belong to before you commit 50 hours.
Is the PS4 version still worth buying?
Yes, for most players. Here is the honest breakdown.
Buy it if:
- You own a PS4 or PS5 and have never played it. The story alone justifies the price, especially during a sale.
- You love slow, immersive open worlds and character-driven writing.
- You want a single-player game that will last weeks.
Think twice if:
- You need 60fps to enjoy a game. The PS5 runs the same 30fps version, and the PC version is the only route to higher frame rates.
- You are mainly interested in online content. Red Dead Online is playable and fun, but it no longer gets major updates.
- You dislike long, scripted missions and slow pacing.
Value matters too. At full launch price, it was a strong buy. At typical sale prices, it is one of the best value games on the PlayStation Store. The cost per hour of play is tiny.
Agent's note
Turn off the radar or switch the HUD to minimal in the display settings for a run or two. Rockstar built the world with landmarks and sound cues for navigation, and the game feels very different when you stop staring at the mini-map.
PS4 controls and settings worth changing
The DualShock 4 layout is mostly intuitive, with a few PS4-specific details players miss:
- Touchpad: opens the map. Press it once, rather than digging through the pause menu.
- R3 (in some contexts): used for melee finishers and certain targeting actions.
- Options button: opens the pause menu, with photo mode accessible from there in current versions.
Settings worth adjusting early:
- Targeting mode: the default soft lock helps new players. Switch to free aim if you want a challenge.
- Camera: set the third-person camera distance to taste. Many players prefer a wider view for horse riding.
- Controls: consider changing the run button behavior. Holding X instead of tapping it reduces thumb fatigue on long rides.
- HDR: if your TV supports it, calibrate it in the game’s own menu. Default brightness settings looked dim to many players at launch.
Story DLC and future content
Rockstar never released single-player story DLC for RDR2. There is no equivalent to the Undead Nightmare expansion from the 2010 game. After seven years, you should treat the story content as final.
On a sequel: a third Red Dead game is NOT ANNOUNCED. Rockstar and Take-Two have made no official statement about one. Our article on Red Dead Redemption 3 release date rumors separates fan speculation from anything with an actual source.
More Rockstar games on PlayStation 4
RDR2 is the best of Rockstar’s PS4 library, though not the only one. If you finish the story and want more, these titles run on PS4 and play on PS5 through backward compatibility or native versions.
| Game | PS4 release | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V | November 2014 (PS4 re-release) | Native PS5 version followed in March 2022 |
| L.A. Noire | November 2017 (remaster) | 1940s Los Angeles detective game |
| Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition | November 2021 | Remasters of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas |
| Red Dead Redemption (2010 game) | August 17, 2023 | Port includes Undead Nightmare; launched at $49.99 |
The 2023 Red Dead Redemption port is the most natural follow-up. It shows how John Marston’s story ends after the events of RDR2. Many fans play RDR2 first, then the original, because the prequel adds weight to John’s choices.

Grand Theft Auto VI is CONFIRMED by Rockstar for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There is no PS4 version. If you want to know when the critics’ verdict lands, our tracker on the GTA 6 review embargo follows when the first reviews go live.
What RDR2 on PS4 means in 2025 and beyond
The PS4 version is still the definitive PlayStation release of the game. No PS5-native edition exists, so the PS4 version is the one Rockstar supports on Sony’s platforms. Patches, Red Dead Online events and store availability all flow through that same listing.
Being an older title has practical benefits for you as a buyer:
- The game is fully patched and stable, with most launch-era bugs long fixed.
- Prices are much lower than at launch, especially during sales.
- Guides, maps and community knowledge are complete and widely available.
The main downside is technical. A 30fps cap on modern hardware feels dated, and a PS5 upgrade patch has never materialized. If Rockstar ever announces one, that would change the calculation. For now, there is no official word, and you should buy the game for what it is today.
FAQ
Is there a PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption 2?
Yes. PS4 was a launch platform on October 26, 2018. The physical version ships on two discs, and the digital version is on the PlayStation Store as a PS4 title. It runs on base PS4, PS4 Slim, PS4 Pro and PS5.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 worth it?
Yes, for anyone who enjoys story-driven open worlds. It holds a 97 Metascore on PS4, the story runs around 50 hours, and frequent sales make it cheap. Skip it only if a 30fps cap or slow, deliberate pacing are deal breakers for you.
Will Red Dead Redemption 2 work on PS4?
It works on every PS4 model. Base PS4 and Slim run it at native 1080p and 30fps, and PS4 Pro uses checkerboarded 4K at 30fps. Make sure you have well over 100GB of free storage for the install and updates.
Is Red Dead Redemption 2 available on the PS4 Store?
Yes. You can buy it from the PlayStation Store on a PS4, a PS5 or the store’s web version. The PS4 listing downloads to both consoles from one purchase. Watch for seasonal sales, since Rockstar discounts the game regularly.
Does the PS4 version include Red Dead Online?
Yes. Every copy of the full game includes Red Dead Online. You need an active PlayStation Plus subscription to play it on PS4, while the story mode works offline without one.
Can I play the PS4 disc on a PS5?
Yes, on any PS5 with a disc drive. Your PS4 saves transfer through PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a USB drive. The game still runs at 30fps on PS5, with faster loading than on PS4.
